For those of you with the 2004-2005 TLs and higher mileage (100k+) do you use the sport shift often?

I have a 2004 and try to limit how much I use sport shift to save the tranny. Just wondering if anyone else does this, or how often you all use sport shift.

Thanks!

Sport shift by itself won't affect trans life. Avoiding the automatic 4-2 downshift will save lots of wear on the 3rd gear clutches as will replacing the pressure switches every 2-3 years and running a DexIII equivalent fluid.

4-2 downshift? The TL really goes from 4th to 2nd when in auto?

That's what I thought when I read that.

How do we avoid 4-2 downshift? By using sportshift and doing it manually?

If you're rolling along at light throttle and moderate speed, say 40mph you'll probably be in 4th. Punch it and it's probably going to hit 2nd. When this happens it briefly energizes the 3rd gear circuit and there's not enough exhaust capacity to release the 3rd clutches before the 2nd gear clutches engage. 2nd gear has the mechanical advantage so those clutches lock in as they should, 3rd gear slips. The driver may or may not feel a quick forward lunge.

Avoid it by not being in 4th when it downshifts to 2nd either by manually shifting or by "driving around" the problem.

I have 147k on my 05, and I've never used the sport shift. Original tranny and original owner. Changed tranny fluid regularly with OEM fluid and have changed the pressure switches once. I'm due for the switches again though.

76k on mine....havent even broken the car in yet. Does the MID regulate tranny fluid and pressure switch changes? Or is that something I should just do at this point?

you'll just have to decide at which intervals you want to do the 1x3's and switches. i do a 1x3 every oil change, some may say its a waste, but i'd rather be safe than sorry and since i'm already down there doing the motor oil why not. i plan on doing my switches again before i reach 100k...so, at this rate, in the next 4-5 years.

Thanks for posting SS usage. I think this is a great metric for all of us to track. If everyone can post that, it would be valuable information.

05' 133K Amsoil ATF every other oil change
SS when drag racing off of traffic lights
otherwise casually fast driving (30 mph over speed limits )

second tranny, due to the failed stock ATF filter at 120K (way too much grief for $11 part)

05 TL auto with 91K Miles on it. Had to change Oxygen Sensor - Check Engine Light reading. Other than that only regular maintenance. Two tires always wear out quicker ( alignment check, balance and rotate tires regularly)

07 with 77,000km, a little bias opinion since the "newest" car I've owned until now was a 96, but it runs like brand new.

'06 5AT w/ ~122k miles. Occasional SportShift, also when I want to hold 4th gear when I'm not going to stay in 5th gear for a while, and to hold lower gears to drive "spirited" down curvy back roads.

190k miles on mine. It no longer runs "like new". It now feels like a car with 50k miles. This vehicle has just been truly a beast and I am constantly impressed with how well it holds up.

Rarely. I only occasionally use it to downshift from 5th to 4th, but it is certainly not a daily thing or even a weekly thing. I'm still on the original trans by the way. Shifts smoothly and I have been using a cocktail of Redline oils (D4+Racing+LWR) in the trans for a few years now. Plenty of threads on that topic, but it certainly worked well for me.

07 TL-S, just turned 52k miles. I rarely use SS, I am used to driving stick, so when I go to use SS I can't help but lift my foot from the gas pedal when I shift. Makes for some odd reactions from the car!
