What cars are people getting into after their TL?

In light of the recent sad series of frequent 3G TLs getting recalled up to Car Heaven by the Automotive God....I became curious to see what cars people are getting into after their 3G TL.

In any event since I've got too much time on my hands tonight I decided to browse through the 3G TL section and the Car Talk section to see who has moved into what cars.

https://acurazine.com/forums/third-g...damage-938624/
2016 WRX

https://acurazine.com/forums/third-g...my-car-938895/
replacement TBA

https://acurazine.com/forums/third-g...-seems-937617/
This amazing thread is actually a whopping 4 for 1! The OP plus 3 other posters reply with their story of totaled 3G TLs.
One poster mentioned he bought a GS350.
The other 2 mentioned another 3G TL and possibly a Lexus GS.
OP buys a new TLX Advance in the end.

https://acurazine.com/forums/third-g...s-curb-938517/
replacement TBA
May not be totaled. Waiting for updates from OP.

https://acurazine.com/forums/third-g...appens-938167/
TBA

A quick look at the threads in Car Talk shows cars such as:
CTS-V, Mustang GT350/Ecoboost, BRZ, S2K, NSX, IS-F, C7 Stingray, Focus ST, E90 335i, E60 M5, M6 Gran Coupe, GS 350, IS 250, '15 S550, Mini Cooper, Kia Optima, Hyundai Elantra...

Some are replacements, some are 2ndary to the TL.

So what would you all get if there was a need for another car?
V6 Accord? Charger Hellcat? Prius?
Or another 3G/4G/5G TL?

If my car was recalled to the heavens, I'd go shopping for a 07-08 TL-S

I use to have a 3g TL about 3 years ago and now i am in a Lexus GS love everything about it but i think the TL is more exciting to drive that is if you add the usual exhaust, aspec kit and wheels etc!

At this point, try as I might I can't come up with another car that I like better than a TL. I have a base right now so maybe I would go with a type-s. Small possibility that I would go for an RL (before they redesigned it with the beak).

you should check out the cartalk sub forum here on acurazine.
you'll notice that most people move away from acura's after their 3G.

CTS-V's, mustangs, audi's, everything under the sun, other than acura's

Right.

It may be because of the people who can afford Acuras to begin with. And those who start out cheap may have graduated/moved into better careers and now are splurging for a bit more performance/luxury than the Acura.

As I mentioned in the OP many guys are driving RWD-luxury platforms.

For me I'd still be looking into a 3G TL-S if I had to get another car soon.

If I wanted to be reasonable...I'd be on the hunt for a CBP 6MT 3G TL-S

Other cars that tickle my taint hard:
A4
CTS-V
2011+ Mustang GT
SRT's, various models
Hot hatches...
Trucks/SUV's...

I'm all over the place, which always leads me back to my 3G. Master of none but Jack(mehoff) of all.

If something happened to my 3G, my reasonable choices would be:
Another TL-S, probably in KBP
'08-'09 Pontiac G8 GT/GXP
'11+ Lexus IS-F
AP2 Honda S2000
Toyota Soarer

Nice. How's the maintenance/repair cost on those Audis? Always hear about the night mare german car maintenance costs...

I'd definitely be looking for a KBP unicorn as well.

Yup 3G TL-S FTW.

Lot of Audi and Lexus and Bimmer replacements.

After working at an Audi dealership, I see a good chunk of Audi's as a bit of a nightmare compared to my Acura and my previous Nissan....
Only Audi's I've heard of that weren't nightmares were owned by technicians who babied their vehicles
If I were to go Audi I'd probably lease or have it become a garage queen...

Surprised to hear this.
I thought the GS350 would be more fun

I'm dead set on a GS350 AWD next year...

Q for you:
Back seat/leg room noticeably more than the 3G?
Main reason for switch is for the AWD and more room for car seats(expecting our 2nd in June).

some great options here...

I have a co-worker that traded his SE-R Altima 6MT for a 2012 GS350 and tells me he thoroughly regrets it.

I guess, as usual...we all want what we don't have, be it versatility, space, mpg, speed, awd, fun to drive...

again, for me, the 3G scratches almost all those itches a LITTLE bit...

From Ford I like the new GT350 & Coyote 'Stang & the Fiesta ST which I actually drove and was really fun & nimble. Other than that even though Ford has some decent products out I'd probably find myself getting their rivals instead...

I always thought that I would go with Audi after my Type S went to Automotive Heaven. Now, I'm not so sure.

I'd love to go with a V8 Vantage, but I doubt it would be a good daily driver.

In the mean time, I'll just drive this.......

I've done this. Started with my 05 TL 6MT. Loved the car but not the payments so I sold it.

02 WRX - swapped a JDM V7 STI motor and 6 speed in - fun car but had to sell when I got offered a good but more than I had in it, plus the 2L just has NO torque, even with AVCS.

01 Corvette - Loved it - long tubes, full exhaust. Then I put in a cam - a BIG cam. A REALLY BIG cam. Still drove great and made 420 RWHP. I just got tired of climbing in and out of it. Friend had a C5 when I was in my early 20s - loved that car more then than now, lol.

04 Infiniti G35 6MT Sedan - hated this car with a passion - Nissan is the biggest hunk of garbage on the planet. Never a Nissan again. I hate the VQ.

Finally - back where I belong - 04 TL 6MT. Yes it's wrong wheel drive, yes it's 10 years old, but damnit - it's probably one of the best looking cars of the past 40 years, is the absolute most comfortable vehicle I have ever sat in and has plenty of room (actually my CRX had more leg room), and it drives so nice. I'm not playing exit ramp tag anymore, so I don't have to push it thru every corner, but it does well enough to have some fun.

I ask myself what I would move onto and I'm very torn. I have yet to drive a Kia Optima or Buick Regal, but those are the only two cars I can think of that would be cheap enough to pay cash for if I sold my TL.

Ideal though? 2009+ CTS-V or 07-08 E90 335i

Dang so it is true. I'll be careful with Audis and likely Bimmers/Benzes in the future....

I'd wrap myself around a tree in that car so I'll need to slowly step up on the power ladder.

Nice!

I'm surprised you didn't like the G35? Though that does seem to be an early model generation.

The other option that I may consider if I had to move away from the TL is a G37x sedan with the sport package and those are 2009+ I believe with the VQ37 motor.

I figured it would satisfy the RWD/300hp+ itch

A E90 335i is definitely doable and a very nice sleeper platform with the TT and 300hp+ as well.

I did read a blog post about a sleeper 5-series idea with the E60 535i (a formidable and practical alternative with the E60 M5 that can still deliver a good power punch with some not too crazy mods): 10 Reasons The E60 535i Is Better Than The M5

I'd definitely go 535 over the M5. Too many issues on the E60 M5 motor, and the turbo motor is just solid.

The G35 never gave me any issues -it was more nitpicky stuff. The seats were great, unless you sat in them more than about 20 minutes. Forget a long trip - they were terrible and very uncomforable. The center stack drove me nuts. You could tell it was a RHD car that they brought over and moved the steering wheel. Everything was backwards - the volume controls were on the far right, the eject button the CD was on the left, it was just obtuse. I'm sure it has been fixed with the later model years, but it put a bad taste in my mouth. The engine bay on the G35 was also cramped compared to the TL (granted that's to be expected with RWD DOHC setup). I just couldn't get into that car - loved the way it looked (not as good as the TL though) but couldn't enjoy it. I put 2000 miles on it over the course of a year and sold it to get the TL again.

I sold my TL for a S2000. The TL had a great run for 7 years but I've been wanting a S2000 since I started driving. Clearly it's not as practical, but damn it's fun. My wife has a sedan and we're in the process of buying a truck as a third vehicle.

I considered buying a GTI or WRX as a sporty sedan replacement for the TL. If I was going to push the budget a bit, without a doubt I would have ended up with a 2013+ GS350 F-Sport. It's the perfect balance of sport and luxury

ISF deff is the next car after my current Type S, Acura/Honda slacking alot since 2008. Its funny a company made sport luxury car like Acura TL Type S turn into grampa Buick meanwhile Japanese Buick (Toyota/Lexus) had stepped up and claim the throne for being sport luxury that somewhat rival the BMW.

5 "Realistic ideas" for my different tastes (given I'm a broke student in between schooling in a province that has the highest auto insurance in Canada):

1) A well maintained E46 M3 if I can spring for it for pure driving enjoyment (and tickets)
2) Old school (think 98-00) Lexus GS430 or a JDM GS with the 2JZ-GTE to VIP out
3) Fiesta ST (one of the only NEW cars that would actively interest me)
4) WDP TL Type S 6MT with every mod you can consider and a built engine revving to 8k.
5) 2014 Accord Coupe with every mod you can consider and a built engine revving to 8k.

Non-realistic ideas:

1) E92 generation 335is, modded to the wazoo
2) new-ish G37, modded to the wazoo
3) JDM Gen4 Toyota Supra or a Toyota Chaser, modded to the wazoo

and just because I'm partial to VIP'd out luxury boats,

4) 1998 Mercedes Benz S500 engine swapped to an LSX, bagged and cambered out.

I've convinced myself that in four years I'll get 2013 GS 350 AWD F Sport in white when the price has come back down to earth! I'll stick with Japanese and the wife continues with German.

I'm dead set on a GS350 AWD next year...

Q for you:
Back seat/leg room noticeably more than the 3G?
Main reason for switch is for the AWD and more room for car seats(expecting our 2nd in June).
Well i did cut back on the modding, the GS right only has cosmetics (lip kit, spoiler/roof spoiler. Maybe wheels but the F-sport wheels already look good. As for the old TL it was fun because i decked it all out and it was fun to drive. Exhaust, intake, drop, wheels, aspec kit, lights etc and it was a lot cheaper to mod compared to the GS parts. The lip kit on my GS is about 5000 and that is with the roof and rear spoiler and not counting the rear apron! I do love the GS because people compliment it all the time! As for the leg room...it is bigger compared to the TL and i switched because AWD and drives in the snow like a champ!

Here are some pics of the GS so far:

I've always gone back and forth between high end cars and basic transportation. The 2008 TL has been the nicest set of wheels I've ever owned, but if anything ever happened to it I'd be looking at a current generation Accord EXL.

I bought a 2011 G37S Sedan 7AT earlier this year with intentions on replacing my TL with it, however I haven't been able to sale the TL yet (Rebuilt title) so in the mean time I've been using the TL for my daily driver to work. I drive the G on weekends.

I don't plan on doing anything crazy to the G like lowering it or putting nice wheels on it. I am very satisfied with the suspension as it is.

I can say without a doubt that the G37S sedan factory suspension handles way better than my 08 TL base model did when it had coilovers and a progress RSB.

Shortly after owning the G, I was able to get a set of Hotchkis front & rear sway bars. They are adjustable and I installed both front & rear in the stiffest setting and man does the G feel awesome when turning. The TL is a fat pig in comparison. Very sloppy on turn-ins and requires more steering effort when speeding through corners.

The only other upgrades I plan on doing are performance mods. I recently just purchased a pair of used high flow cats. I'm waiting to order a full cat-back exhaust that way I can install both at the same time while I'm under the car.

After the exhaust is finished I plan on swapping the differential for one with a shorter final drive. Factory is 3.35 and I'm aiming for 3.69. For less than $500 that will give you a lot of bang for your buck. A damn true cold air intake for this car (Takeda, Stillen) runs for about $450-$550 ! Much rather spend my money on a shorter FD first.

I would avoid the AWD, G37xS, unless you truly need AWD for winter. The reason being is because the "sport" package for the AWD models is a gimmick. It is all cosmetic. There is no real "sport" enhancing upgrades compared to the RWD "sport" package.

In the RWD "sport" model you get
- Sport Tuned Suspension
- Sport Tuned Steering gear ratio
- Viscous Limited-Slip Differential
- Akebono Big Brake Kit with larger rotors. 4 Piston front, 2 piston rear calipers.

In the AWD "sport" you don't get anything listed above. Instead you get everything else that is also included in the RWD "Sport package"
- Sport front seats
- Paddle Shifters
- Sport Pedals
- Sport front bumper
- Sport wheels

Man that Tarus SHO weighs nearly 4,500 lbs and only makes 360hp from a 3.5L V6 twin turbo... Looks too. I don't see anything special about the Taurus SHO

In comparison the upcoming Focus RS is expected to make ~360HP from a 2.3L I4 turbo and will most likely weight 3400lbs or less.

I think if we all had to choose 1 out of the 2, everyone would go for the Focus RS

Man that generation GS you got there is definitely a looker. To me anyways. It's very classy with a hint of sportyness. Nothing excessive and BAM IN YOUR FACE like the front end of the newer IS/RC (I love the way both of those cars look too)

I read your comment about the lip kit and looked at the pictures and thought to myself "I don't see a lip kit...." until I read your last sentance about the car being black and making it hard to notice. I can definitely relate to that. My TL was black and after owning a black car I promised myself that I would NEVER EVER own another black car ever again. It's so hard to see the body lines compared to a lighter colored car. Adding a a-spec lip kit on my TL made almost no difference. I don't think I would be too happy about dropping $5k on a lip kit that is hardly noticeable on my car because it's black.

That's the reason why I got a white G37S instead.

What color is your interior?

I don't get having 2 daily drivers...I mean, if you're bored, you gotta scratch the itch but the TL is the perfect excuse to go be an absolute moron and get something you CAN'T drive every day.

Either way, the G and the GS are great choices for cars! Congrats!

There was no Lexus GS350 for 2012 model year. The 2011 was the previous bubbly round body style and the 2013 was the newer refined version

Thanks. I would love to get rid of the TL but now i'm having to deal with the common problem when buying rebuilt titled cars. Trying to sell it isn't so easy. I'd love to drive the G everyday but for now it only serves a purpose as a weekend car to take my girl out

No doubt, man...
I'm assuming you priced it accordingly? Advertised it as rebuilt very obviously? I'm sure someone that is a mechanic or knows how to wrench would love to save the money on getting rebuilt

Probably German, although the wallet will surely suffer. Used 335i or B8 S4, although the Golf R is looking very interesting. That I could probably swing new, but even that's still $40k with the DCC.
