Question UA7 Rear bumper questions

Unfortunately I am going to need my rear bumper cover replaced. While parked at work , someone backed into me.

So this got me thinking about what the 07-08 bumpers looked like. I've never really paid attention before, but might as well try to upgrade.
Now I'm not sure if this is something the body shop will allow me to do, but I will ask. I imagine as long as the 07 bumper costs the same as the 06, they shouldn't care.

It looks like the only difference is the plastic "grille" addition in the middle of the bumper. I not really feeling the base one, but the Type S looks a little more aggressive.

Here comes the questions. Has anybody swapped the black grille piece out with CF or something? That plastic grille looks kind of cheap close up.

Don't get me wrong, I still think it gives the rear of the car a nicer, more aggressive look, just think it can be better.

Also, is there 2 different Type S rears. This is the one I saw most....

Is the second one just a paint job? If it is , I doubt the body shop will do all that. I am already thinking about getting the Type S tails sometime down the road, just not sure when. I think back up cam is my next mod.

Also thinking of ditching the mud flaps since my dog used the drivers side one as a chew toy.

Sorry to hear what happened.

And definitely upgrade to a Type-S rear bumper if you can.

The pictures you posted all have a Type-S bumper.

The only difference in the last picture is the bottom part is painted black.

EDIT: ^^beat me to it

That's what I was wondering. I don't think the body shop will cover that extra work in their estimate, and I don't have the funds to pay extra right now (tis the season).
To bad, because I think I like that one better.

You can do the same and just buy flat black vinyl.

That's how he did it...

I'd be to afraid of effing it up. Then it would forever look like shit.

I do like that look though.

Post a WTB Type s rear bumper ad in the market section and see what comes up... wouldnt hurt.

Also, is there any damage to youre car other than the actually rear bumper cover?.. because if not, personally I would skip the whole body shop costs. Have the insurance company cut me a check for a dealer quoted replacement rear bumper price (to get the most money) but buy a used type s bumper online and swap it out myself and keep the change for christmas shopping! Tis the season!

How much does that UA7 bumper for the TL-S cost? Is it hard to install, considering that it would be pretty much impossible to fit in the car to drive to a mechanic and getting it installed there...?

OK, the bumper sounds like a done deal. With some damage to the taillight, I might get some Type S tails out of this without to much out of pocket. I will have to wait and see.

Also, can anyone answer these.........

Are you talking about the black grill in the rear bumper? if so then no, I personally have never seen it.. But there is a CF sticker I saw on ebay that covers it.

I was hoping you were going to post. How is it holding up? It looks great. Did you sand or prime the area first?

Nah dude, no prep other than just clean the bumper really well.
It's just vinyl.

Think of it as a really good sticker

I'm using 3M vinyl too (1080 series) and it holds up extremely well.

Hell, people wrap their whole cars in this stuff.

after reading the posts I somehow had the wrong impression of paint.

So it's basically what many people are putting on their roofs then.

In that case maybe I will try it, I'd be more comfortable working with this. If

you make a mistake you just peel it off and start over.

Yeah, I'm very happy with it. They had to order me a new right side taillight because mine had a piece of paper or something in it.

I think I'm going to. I really like the way his looks.
I'm gonna copy ya 07tl-s6spd. imitation is the highest form of flattery
The only thing I'm worried about is cutting the top edge line while its against the car, or did you put the factory edge on top and cut the bottom?

I had to trim the top of it.Mainly cause the way the bumper curves i could not get a straight line. With the 3m stuff all you do is rest your exacto knife on it and make the line the best you can.It kinda scores it and it rips almost similiar to duct tape.If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

All right, I tried the vinyl thing a while back, and it didn't go well for the vinyl. I think if I'd had another person, it might have gone better.

So I had the bright idea a few weeks ago to plasti-dip it instead. All went well until it was time to take the tape off. The plasti-dip stuck to the tape and wanted to tear off completely when I tried to remove it.
So I tried gently cutting it with a razor, but was paranoid about cutting into my bumper, so it stretched the PD in places. As a result , the trim line wasn't exactly what I would call straight

I guess I could redo it, but for now I'll just leave it as is. It doesn't look as good as 07tl-s6spd's does but maybe third time will be the charm. Depending on how well it holds up, I might try the vinyl again. Anyway, here it is.

SiQ, sounds like you didn't do enough coats of PD for the tape to peal off properly. I think 6-8 coats is the proper amount?

More coats? It seems like it would still tear with the tape as every coat went over the tapeline.

^^^ right, which is fine. I haven't done much PD, but from what I've read, the most coats you do, the thicker the bond and easier for the tape to peel off. Now that I type it out, that doesn't make much sense lol

+1, tear it off while it's still a bit tacky/wet and it will leave a smooth line and won't fubar the plasti-dip.

There is no A-spec bumper, its just a lip that goes over the existing bumper. There is the A-spec Base rear lip or A-spec Type S rear lip, and Base bumper or Type S bumper.

I did several coats with 30 minutes between (per the directions), would that still work after after the last coat was applied and still wet, I would think it would still have torn because of the previous coats.
