Angry A Tragedy Happened Today

I was innocently parked when a kid backed into me. He hit the car so hard that it got pushed onto the curb! He said his Volvo wagon got stuck in reverse. His 'ol man said he mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal which more inclined to believe. The car was towed to a lot so I'm out the car tonight. Obviously, his insurance should cover it all including a rent-a-car. Paul, our star mechanic here in Northern NJ is coming to inspect it tomorrow.

Stay tuned folks .........

A nearly 14 year-old Acura TL with that much damage, does not look like insurance will fix that...

The kid must've flown into your car though to smack it up on to the curb and do that much damage

Write off.

I think the wheel, fender, bumper, headlight, resonator and shock absorber will put it pretty close. Suspension and possible frame damage could send it over.

I've rarely seen rims break like that. That was some serious force. Car is 100% write off.

Hopefully there's no undercarriage damage, but would be surprised if the car isn't totaled.

Not certain as to what year/model Volvo that did the damage, but the company placed the brake pedal
very close to the gas pedal on some models and yes, the gas pedal is floored as one believes they are on the brakes. He isn't the first.

The new tires didn't keep the car from moving!!!!!!!!

Silly me, I'm looking at the pictures and think, "That's fixable". I'm thinking you need Michael J. Fox's mechanic in Doc Hollywood.

That's not a tragedy. A tragedy would've been if you were hurt/killed in the accident. It's good nothing happened to you. This is just unfortunate. Terribly unfortunate.

That wheel must've taken one SERIOUS hit to crack like that I was literally putting on my oem 5 spokes for winter last night and as I was holding on to 2 of the spokes of one of the wheels, I was like "wow. these wheels are pretty f****** solid"

There's no way the front of the car isn't twisted. Sorry man. I dunno.

Sorry about the TL.

It looks like the passenger fender and door gap are off too, so the frame is likely bent.
I wouldn't be surprised, given an impact pushing your car up a curb and breaking a wheel.

Time for you to get the Escalade..

If it were mine, I would hope they would total it and give me a fair payout. I agree with others that there is likely frame damage. Probably won't be the same if it is repaired.

Update:
The car was inspected today by Paul, our star master mechanic here in Northern NJ. As far as he could tell, the frame is INTACT and not bent, but I'll need an A/C condenser and possibly a radiator. The fans hadn't been moved and the engine appears intact and not moved either. The insurance adjuster is supposed to make the official evaluation tomorrow.

Once again, stay tuned.......

My body guy didn't make it as he was in the hospital early this morning getting Kidney stones taken care of. Meanwhile, the kid's insurance company, Progressive, has been extremely helpful so far. I have a 2017 Malibu rental. I tell ya, you don't realize the magnitude of having a new car until you have one. Nice car!

Keeping my fingers crossed you can get your car back on the road.

Regarding the Malibu, hmmm, after driving my mom's 2016.5 Malibu a couple of times, I don't get the attraction; hell, I'd rather drive my old 2001 Accord.

It's a 2004, isn't it? There's no way that car isn't a write off. it's 13 years old! That doesn't mean you can't buy it back and have it repaired. It'll just have a different title (salvage, vs repaired, or something, I dunno). All I know is when a car gets hit that hard, it is never the same again, no matter what you do to fix it. New rattles start up. you notice small little annoyances that never used to be there, etc.

Let's say the car was worth 8k, before. What's the limit before a car gets written off? Isn't it like 50% of it's value? So if there's more than 4k of damage... or 5k... well...

Hmmm, not sure I buy that; I've had cars hit far worse and fixed as good as new; that and not all states even mess with salvage titles. Not sure about New Jersey...

The percentage of when it is written off varies from state to state and from company to company. I had a previous car valued at $6800 with $6200 worth of repairs needed....they (Allstate) fixed it. My wife's old Grand Am was rear-ended by an uninsured motorist....valued at $2400'ish and repairs were just shy of $2000...they (USAA) fixed it as well.

Hoping the best for you and your car. I like the new Malibu overall...mostly just because our cars are so ancient compared to just about any mid-range new car.

I totaled my 2008 civic with 66k on it 3 weeks ago. Also got a 2017 Malibu as a rental. I prefer the 04 tl I got with the insurance payout.
Didnt care for the Malibu.

I've driven Chevy's entire 4-door lineup in recent rentals, and I wouldn't trade a single one of them for the TL. Well, maybe if it was brand new and I could resell it for enough to buy two TLs.

I agree! Beautiful car - so sorry this happened.

With regards to whether it's totaled, or not, I'll keep those thoughts to myself. I wish I had something helpful to say, but I don't. However, whatever happens, I hope you're made whole. Well, as close to whole as possible!

oh man... sorry this happened! i just saw you had a lot of miles on your car, and was just asking in another thread about how you maintained your manual transmission... and if you've ever had problems with the 3rd gear popping out?

anyway... i too, had my infiniti fx35 hit while it was parked sunday morning. some guy probably partied too hard because apparently he hit 2 other parked cars and flipped his car... and i live in a residential area, so he must've been flying or something!

goodluck, and let us know how it goes!

We with manual transmissions have pretty much all had 3rd gear pop out; it's a very-very simple fix. Drain your transmission fluid and replace it with 2.3 quarts of ACDelco Synchromesh Friction Modified (make absolutely sure it is the "Friction Modified" stuff).

Problem solved.

Sorry that this unfortunate accident happened. Here's my 2 cents on the damage. If Paul is suggesting it needs a radiator and condenser, most likely means the radiator support was pushed. The radiator support is welded to the frame rails. The frame rails are strong but can be moved by a force like this. The sub frame (cradle) also bolts to the frame rails as well to the body. The cradle, tend to bend or be tweaked easily due to it being a softer aluminum. Look at the fender and hood gap, it's out of alignment. The drivers upper frame rail most likely needs to be pulled as well. I don't discredit Paul, I know him personally and he's a great guy, but the only way to really know whats going on, is to strip the front end and put the vehicle on an body alignment rack. Measurements will be recorded and the body shop will know what needs to be done in order to bring the frame back within the recommended mm. I was an ASE master certified technician and also worked for Acura for a few years. Before going to Acura I was certified in body repairs and inspections. See what the insurance company says, I have a good feeling they will write it off just due to the age / mileage of the vehicle. This is a bit more involved if you wanted to buy this vehicle back from the insurance company and fix it yourself. Keep us posted and best of luck!

Changed the fluid to the GM stuff (now an AC Delco product) when the car had 7,000 miles and never looked back!
