TL Type S Manual Trans = Unicorn

I just took a look at my saved Auto Trader alert. About a month ago thee were like 30 MT type S cars within a 200 mile radius of PA -----now there are 5 ! And a lot of them are higher mileage. Hard to believe the availability is so low on these cars now. Glad I got mine when I did.

30 within 200 miles all at the same time??? Thats an incredibly high number if that's true. Usually at any given time there is maybe 30 in the entire country if that. I had to travel to get my 08 6mt to find the right one. It seems there is usually only low mileage ones that are near $30K or super high mileage ones that I'm not interested in. Finally came across a average mile one owner 08 in excellent condition. Bought a plane ticket picked the car up and was home with it by dinner time :-)

The MT has always been in low production numbers ( I believe Acura may have said 5% or something along those lines) so there's not much surprise. I just find it hard to believe that there would be 30 within 200 miles of each other. I agree with James- it's more plausible that there is 30 in the whole country (if that).

I think availability is cyclic like that.

If I were shopping, I'd make the 6MT the highest priority and you can just do a conversion that gets close enough. It's extra time, effort, and money, but if you can't find one, you can "build one up" to some extent. But also, don't overlook a basic search, like "Acura TL" and filter for the 3G model years. I found my 6MT at a non-Acura dealer and the ad did not have any tags that would've come up as a manual. The same thing happens for TL-S's.

I think Acura made 10% of the TL's in MT from 04-06 and when the type-s became the only way to get a MT the percentage got even smaller. Combine all this with the better brakes, suspension, and many other items and you get cars that are not often sold.

Before I bought my '08 6MT, only available used were at least 500 miles away and that was just for one car. Then Acura nearby received a lease turn in one night and I bought it that night.

I know how you feel man. I've been trying to look for a 6MT type s for a while now to trade with my 5AT. But the nearest one is 300+ miles away.

I am in the tri state area so there are a LOT of car dealers around me. There were actually 26 available. My guess is there were a lot of them just coming off lease. I will give you guys a little tip. Search here for your MT TL's---
http://www.acura.com/CertifiedPreOwned.aspx
Some dealers advertise there before it hits auto trader, cars.com etc.
I got burned three different times trying to pick one up on auto trader. The cars were gone before I could even get down to the dealer. Any low mile, clean car fax cars would be gone within 48 hours of advertising.
Thats how I got mine. I bought it before they even had a chance to advertise and the prices are often lower than auto trader.

Some other cool data about the 07/08 Type S 6mt that I did not know is that its the most fuel efficient 3G TL built. More fuel efficient than even the base model, its obviously the lightest by a somewhat signficant amount, and has the best weight distribution.
I know this stuff because I bought a 2008 Acura TL dealer brochure that I found on ebay. Has some sweet pics and good info in it.

TL 18/26
TL Type S MT 18/27
TL Type S AT 17/26

curb weight:

Base w/o nav 3623
Base w nav 3636
Type S MT 3559
Type S AT 3674

weight distribution:

Base w/o nav 62/38
Base w nav 61/39
Type S MT 60/40
Type S AT 61/39

So even though its for the most part minor the 6mt Type S really is the absolute best one performance wise in every category...even fuel economy go figure ;-)

Maybe for the 07-08 model year, but the 04-06 TL's that were MT get better mileage.

Well I wasn't talking about the older 04-06 TL's I don't have or know the data from those years since the brochure I have was for 08. What I should have stated was the Type S MT is the best all around for 07/08 model years. As for the older ones sounds like the 6MT is also the way to go performance figure wise. Thanks for the info.

I searched like heck to find a 3g TL with MT. Finally picked up an '04 A-Spec with 64,000 miles a few months ago. Im in AZ and the closest one I found was Florida. Traded in my 06 MazdaSpeed 6 without batting an eye.

^^^ I saw that too and was like WTF. It doesnt even have low mileage either. Mayyyyyyybe if the car had like 7,000 miles I could almost see one being listed at 32 as reasonable, but 32K for a used TL thats going on 50K miles?!?!?! WTF I bought my 08 6mt with less mileage than that a couple months ago for $24

It took me a while for me to find one. I went on autotrader everyday for about 4-5 months and I only saw the colors I didn't want. For an example there was an AM with tan interior. Yuck.

Finally found one close to my hometown in Illinois. Drove 6 hours from Iowa praying that the car would still be at the dealer. I still feel fortunate everytime I shift.

Same here I was on auto trader everyday for like a year. Every now and then I would give up. As it turns out I finally found the car on the Acura website BEFORE it got to autotrader. Sometimes dealers list it there first--saves them some advertising costs I guess.
