So this "so much fail in hot weather" problem only pertains to certain TLs? Weird. Performance wise, mine is basically stock. No CAI or anything and I don't notice a dramatic difference in the 90 degree/60+% humidity here.

Yep, its a real problem. The mpg goes down into the 13mpg range and it feels like hp is cut by half. Every car is slower in the heat but this is an actual problem.

It's funny you ask, I'm probably going to do it after work today. My car is finally back into the slower than a Geo mode.

there as a whole nother thread on this where IAT sensor was replaced to resolve this issue. Some cars had bad sensors..........

on a side note, if you are expecting your TL to be a sprinter in the summer when it is hot and you got the A/C on, lol you're just nuts

It's been hot in Houston and I can notice the difference in power but it's not as slow as a Corolla or Geo Metro like some of you here have mentioned.

Tried replacing it. Tried moving it to a hotter spot. Tried moving it to a cooler spot.

Of course it's going to lose power but this is more than normal cold to hot variance.

I loosened the wire collector to squeeze back my 10 mm + extension to get it.. it was still pretty tight.

And here is the page from the manual. Sorry IHC, I know you are pic-challenged until you get home.

When testing it in a pot of boiling water, the manual says to look for this -

LOL. Thanks for the 5 red "X"s. Can't wait to see it when I get home. I'm sure between your manual and Mojofo's DIY it should go smoothly. With my luck the weather will go from 100+ to freezing the day after I do it.

Any update on this? This isn't just present in our cars. I noticed it in a 4g TL SH-AWD, sometimes the car would pull and accelerate like a bat out of hell and other times it would make all the same sounds but seem so much slower, I couldn't figure out the variable. This might have uncovered a problem with all these cars. It's hugely frustration with my type-s because it goes into metro mode on me when it's hot.

It's the ambient air temps that get high under the hood. Yes, the fans and coolant system are more than suffcient for the TL but the hot air has nowhere to vent or escape. Highway driving you won't notice much because of the steady airflow and cruise speed. But in stop and go traffic in hot temps the car becomes a pig. Mine has gotten so bad at times the car barely moves from a stop with the a/c on. Yes, all cars suffer from heat soak to a degree. I've owned quite a few cars (mostly Honda products) and my 08 TL is by far the worst when it comes to heat soak. It becomes a PIG in hot weather. I've removed all the under hood plastic which helped a bit and I've removed the rubber seal by the windshield wipers as it allows for a very small gap so heat can escape. Its a bit better but still not acceptable. I'm going to try my own version of the "ultimate cooling mod". I'm going to remove it, cut some vents out so heat can escape then reinstall it as I want and need my squirters.

You're exactly right about the when and why.

I did find a couple issues with mine that almost eliminated the no power when heat soaked. And by eliminate I mean it still loses power in the heat, but it's more like a normal power loss, not the type where you have to start off full throttle just to keep up with a Corolla from a light. The problems I found center around the electrical system which is the last thing I would suspect and part of the reason I don't post much about it because it's probably unique to my car. I believe the under hood heat is the trigger.

I am a fairly new owner of an 04 6spd TL and I am glad I stumbled on this thread. I am glad to know I am not the only one that thinks this car performs worse than a geo metro on a hot day with the A/C on. My fiance has a kia rio and sadly she can out accelerate me on a hot day...talk about embarrassing. I am going to try removing all the plastic and the rear hood seal to see if it improves anything.

the first summer I had my car, it definitely lost a lot of power off the line. however, last summer, and this year so far its been great. I can actually break traction pretty consistently even with my grippy tires.

*knock on wood* I hope the heatsoak problem never comes back.

I've got a 16 kOhm resistor in my AIT plug. Tells my ECU that it's taking in air at -22F. Been driving my TL all weekend in the hot humid VT weather with no signs of heatsoak.

I have tried a couple things, I am running without the above engine plastic, I don't believe the surrownding ones make that big of a difference, not to mention it's so much more attractive when the hood is open. I also removed the rear rubber strip that seals the back of the hood. But what made the biggest difference for me is that TB coolent delete, this greatly improved the reponse but not nearly as much as I would like. I am going to try replacing my IAT sensor and relocating it as it's currently zip tied to my frame rale as I have no bumpers.

Does the tl type s with the 3.5 also have this heat soak issue? My brother is getting a 08 type s in a few months once a blue one comes up for sale in the area.

I wanna know everything about this car before he gets it lol....

As for my CL... I have never had an heat soak issue... Mind you I have no plastic covers... Huge open aftermarket grille and p2r tb spacer and thermal gaskets on the tb and manifold, and a cai... And I wrapped my headers double the recommended thickness

I've had my TL for a year now and I haven't noticed any decrease in performance during the hotter months...like a few have said, if you're flooring the car, maybe then will you notice a difference, particularly if it's 100°F out and 100% humidity. But for everyday driving, there's no noticeable difference. Also, the A/C will be on anyway (unless you like torture), so the only thing you'll notice is drag from the A/C running.

Maybe you didn't read the thread but some TLs lose so much power you have to floor it just to keep up with traffic. Some experience just a normal power loss in the summer. It sounds like yours has the normal power loss. That does not change the fact that some of us have had to deal with a huge power loss in the summer.

Every car I've come across since computer controls came out shut the compressor off during full throttle operation. That includes carbureted cars with TPS sensors right before EFI.

It gives a couple more hp and it stops the condensor from heating up the air before it enters the radiator but I believe a big reason is compressor speed. At least years ago, they did not like redline runs and with redlines going up over the years it might be even more important. I've never tried it but I wonder if high rpm would shut one down too.

I had a gentleman at a speed shop offer me a water-meth injection kit to combat heat soak. Anyone think about this?

I think it's a very good way to get rid of the heat soak problems assuming the heat issues are actually from the super heated air entering the engine. Meth will give you winter power all year round on any car. Since you're using it just as a cooling aid I highly suggest straight meth. Water can hurt performance in a naturally aspirated car.

For what it's worth I got mine back to a normal power loss after finding a bad connection near the fuse box and running a better battery. I can only guess the under hood heat made the connections even worse. I suggest meth if your TL has a normal summertime power loss.

In Phoenix we only have two seasons spring and summer lol. ..i too have noticed my car running sluggish but we're at 106 daily since the past two weeks. ...and plus stop and go traffic doesn't help neither. .plus we have that dry heat...
