Which timing belt kit would you recommend? Gates or Aisin kit?

I found two Timing belt kits on Amazon and they are priced similar. Which kit do you think is better? The Gates TCKWP329 or the AISIN TKH-002 kit? From what I've read, the only knock on the Gates kit is the water pump is made in China. Not sure where the AISIN water pump is made..

I went with the Gates kit and have no regrets. I have 30K miles on the kit with no issues. As you noted, everything in the Gates kit is OEM except for the water pump.

However, had the Aisin kit been available for only $3 more at the time, I would have gone with it. AFAIK, the Aisin pump is OEM. I'd go with the Aisin kit.

I went with Gates also, no problems after 3k miles. I thought Yamada was the OEM pump?

My old OEM pump was Aisin. Honda/Acura may source both for OEM or may have switched to Yamada for later models, dunno...

I just looked at my old one, and you're absolutely right mine was an Aisin too. I just thought they all were all Yamada's because the Honda estore shows Yamada as the OEM.

Yeah, the Aisin part# is 19200RDMA01 and the Yamada part # is 19200RDVJ01. Looks like Aisin was OEM for early model 3G TL's and has since been replaced/superseded by Yamada.

meh my oem aisin pump was weeping fluid at 70k miles. Going aftermarket in the Gates kit may not be a bad thing.

Ordered it from Amazon directly. It was on backorder but they are still honoring the price. $160 shipped, rock auto is closer to $200!

did you ever get your kit from Amazon? i just checked and it's still marked @ 156 bucks but it's still out of stock.

I'm at 105k and this seems to be a great deal...now I just need to work out a deal to get it all installed.

let me know if your amazon order ever came through. thanks.

The main difference between both kits is the water pump in the Gates is made in China and sometimes you will get the idler pulley and tensioner pulley also made in China.

All these parts in the Aisin kit are from Japan I believe. The timing belt is made in Singapore but it is oem quality.

There is a thread here that documented a failed Gates water pump. Search for that.

The Aisin kit is the only one Paul, our star mechanic in NJ, recommends.
100% genuine OEM parts without the Honda name on the package.

Aisin with a Honda serp belt. I used a 07 V6 accord belt because cheaper. It's the same belt used in the TL.

Gates brand water pump took a crap on me at about the 50k mile mark (started getting noisy, was leaking and was partially seized when removed). I'll never use one again.

To get all OEM in aftermarket boxes you would need the Aisin brand kit but with a Gates brand timing belt. Gates (called Unitta in the Asian market) makes the OEM Honda belts. The Aisin kits include a Mitsuboshi brand timing belt for some reason. Mitsuboshi is OEM for Toyota.

If you open this photo up bigger you can clearly see "Unitta" printed on the side of the OEM TL Timing belt.

Personally I did the Gates TCK kit (no water pump), Aisin brand tensioner, and a Honda/Yamada water pump.

not sure if it's the yamada waterpumps but nearly every acura equipped with them from the factory has the stupid timing belt chirp, apparently a $200 shim kit is needed to fix the issue on MDX's, TL's, etc.

The chirp is caused by the oil pump (originally produced by Aisin). The surface that the front idler pulley mounts too is not flat.

BTW: The $200 OEM kit is definitely NOT required. You just need the shim which was included for in my Gates TCK kit. If you already have sourced a new water pump (which you should have), then the only other thing the Honda kit has that the Gates kit doesn't is a new crank-timing-pulley. But that's just $10 at the local dealer (at least for my 05 it is).

PULLEY, TIMING BELT DRIVE for 2005 Acura TL|13621-RCA-A01

ALWAYS INSTALL THE SHIM!!!!

If I buy the AISIN TKH002 kit from rockauto, what do you guys recommend to buy in addition to it for the 105k service? Also, do you guys recommend swapping some parts out of the AISIN kit for different ones? Rockauto has the lowest price as of right now, less than 240 shipped. Im still quite far away for when my service is due, but might just get it done earlier for peace of mind...

Amazon.com: Buying Choices: Aisin TKH-002 Engine Timing Belt Kit with Water Pump

You will also need 2 gal of Honda blue coolant, and consider new plugs and thermostat.

Might as well do the radiator hoses as long as you're changing coolant.

@94eg those prices are the same as rockauto with their 5% coupon added. I've dealt with rockauto in the past, awesome customer service and fast shipping.
