Swapping non-navigation display for navigation display(touchscreen) includes harness

What’s up guys,

Just thought I would share with you guys my project. I am working on adding a Car PC to my 2004 Acura TL. My vehicle does not have navigation. My plan is to replace the factory display with a compatible LCD and upgrade the touch panel to a capacitive touch panel.

In order to accomplish my install, I needed to look into where I would put the factory HVAC display. As you all know on the non-navigation models the HVAC display and radio display share the space where the touchscreen goes on the navigation model.

I have seen people relocate the entire board with that information to the cubby below the factory radio but I did not want to do that. Also, I did not want to stray away from the factory look and feel. The reason I did not just settle for a tablet in the location of the display is because I want to at some point add a backup camera, and I would like this mod to also work for someone with factory Nav.

This project is 5 pieces all being worked on at the same time.
1.The first is creating the necessary harness to interface with the factory components.
2. Tying in an Arduino microcontroller to interface with the GA-NET+ bus in the vehicle.
3. An external graphics card to manage all the video interfacing
4. Maintaining as many factory options as possible. (HFL, NAV, XM)
5. Adding a Bluetooth streaming option (call also)

The first part and the main reason for this post is the harness portion. I was able to create a harness that using a factory navigation display shows the HVAC data on the navigation HVAC sub display clock. If your car doesn’t have factory navigation you can replace the display unit with the factory navigation one and your clock with the factory navigation sub display. Then use this harness to connect it all together and have it working.

There are two huge faults with this method
1. You cannot change the time of the clock, it sets to 1 so you have to line up your reset or install with that time or not hook up the clock.
2. Your radio information will not show on the display, the navigation DVD drive must be plugged in for this information to show.

I am working with Arduino to duplicate the signals sent to the display from the navigation unit with this information. Also I have been in contact with the GP-NET+ adapter maker that you make have seen in many videos. ??????? He has an adapter you can use that will mimic the factory navigation.

Again, this post is mostly about the harness for the HVAC sub display and factory navigation display and how to use them to run a car pc or replace the display with a tablet. I will also be updating this post on how to make the full navigation harness, I am just waiting on the connector housing to come in.

Quick Update

Hey guys,

Just wanted to post a quick update for anyone who comes along to this post.

I got the information for the radio to show on my HVAC display. I purchased a DVD unit that was no good for $50, made the harness that will give it power and allow it to talk to the radio (bus signal) and without putting in a code or doing anything to the navigation it relayed the information to the display. I am now able to see all the radio information.

It's a hackway of making it work but it works. Also I am making some headway on the GA-NET bus sniffer. Here is a rough look at the schematic.

I am working on getting a prototype going. Will update the thread when I make some progress.

I know is a old thread but, I make that harness and it work, but I don't know if it's a cause of this but in my interface no work the steering wheel controls, can be for the bus?,, My radio is of a non-navi, but I have the Navi and the HVAC display,, sorry for my bad English
