Surveillance camera - you should all get one!

Hello there Acuraziners,

I though I would share the story that happened to me this winter. I came to work and noticed this:

I got so pissed and my face turned purple. I was really angry and I thought that it happened at work. I started looking at other cars to see if they have matching scratches. Didn't find anything. After few minutes when I calmed down I did login to my camera remotely and found this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/p3g2g7myec...acura.avi?dl=0

It was hit and run.... The funny part is that this is my father's friend and she had no clue about my camera I showed the video to my dad and he called her right away asking if she recalls anything happening that day since someone hit my car. She said no... LOL! My dad said that we have a camera outside and we saw her hitting my car. She said that she was probably listening to the radio to loud. We both laughed but then she finally apologized and said that she will cover all the costs. I told her that $200 would do it. Here is the picture of the damage on a clean car:

She said that she will give me the money back as soon as she gets it because she was broke at that time. I was waiting for my $200 for about 3 months. Within that time she flew to Florida for vacations and it got me pissed off. I took the car to certified body shop after 3 months and they quoted the damage (repainting the bumper and new OEM taillight) to $720. I got the copy of the invoice and gave it to that lady and told her that the plan has changed and she has 7 days to pay my $720. I got the money next day. I hope that she learned the lesson that it is not worth to lie especially multiple times. I tried to be nice and charge her much less than what it would cost me to repair the damage. She chose to have me wait so long so I chose to charge her more. Stupidity always costs money. The more stupid you are, the more you end up paying. Just like this lady.

Thank you for your time reading my story.

Definitely hope she learned her lesson.

Also hope you learned your lesson to not pull numbers out before getting a quote.

Surveillance cameras are handy if you live in an apartment/condo.
Won't be needed for people who park in their garage.
A dashcam would be more entertaining - records when you're parked (like this situation) if you hardwire, and records while you're driving - two in one!

A shock sensor would also be nice to add since "her music was probably too loud".
It could also alert nearby walkers and they would look over and see that your car was hit and record the license plate for you.
There's a saying some people go by - if you're not caught, you didn't do it, and drive off.
If the person that hit your car notices other people looking over since your car's alarm is going off, they'll be less inclined to drive off, hopefully.

How stupid of someone to say " radio was to loud " when she almost propelled your car forward off the curb.
Glad you caught that lying bitch.

Her music must have been REALLY loud for her to not feel the impact. Glad you were compensated but I wonder how many other people have been screwed by her shitty driving and lack of ethics.

damn, PB, that sucks. That's one of my biggest "fears" every time I leave the car parked in a lot. I always check around the car real quick when I get back to it. Luckily, my work spot is pretty safe.

In your case, it looks like some drunk co-worker was bouncing off cars as he left the lot.

Someone (not a coworker) turned in the parking lot to turn around, then tried getting between my car and my coworker car we believe. Space was too tight and he scraped both and left without ever telling us.

I think what I would have done is get a professional estimate and then notify her of the cost and my intent to involve the insurance company (my own after her plate # is known), get it fixed and then have her insurance pay up. She thinks she has no money now? Wait til hers gouges her for hit and run.

I love hearing stories like this. I have a dash cam myself, I haven't caught anyone doing anything suspicious, but I'm hoping I do one day! Luckily the car belonged to someone your family knew, otherwise a random stranger's car probably wouldn't have been caught that easily.

Cool, does it record 24/7 or only when the ignition is ON? Where do you have it situated?

this guy

If he didn't catch anyone doing anything suspicious, that means he has it hardwired so it can record while parked.
Otherwise if it was wired to be on only when the car was on, he would have been inside the car and be able to deal with any suspicious activity then and there.

Situated near the middle of the the windshield on top, like 95% of people with dash cams.

On side note, I've had many instances where I've caught stuff on my dash cam, while I'm driving, or while I'm parked.

I've caught a toddler dropping handful of gravel over my hood while watching the gravel rain down on my hood (you can hear the sound).
I've caught people driving stupid that doesn't affect me, and sometimes people who affect me and almost causes an accident.
I've caught a young couple park in front of my car, and move to the back of their car probably getting some action on (I park far in parking lots).

My family recently switched security system providers and now I have two cameras staring at my TL.

Caught my neighbor riding his bike into my car, also caught some people eating pizza on the trunk!

Cameras are a great investment, honestly.

Even if her radio was super loud there is no way she couldn't have felt the impact. She lied and paid for it. Good.

i just put a dash cam in my car the other week, I went with this one:

Amazon.com : Street Guardian SG9665GC Supercapacitor Sony Exmor IMX322 WDR CMOS Sensor DashCam 1080P 30FPS + 32GB microSD card + USB/OTG Android Card Reader + GPS (Best Of - DashCamTalk) : Electronics Amazon.com : Street Guardian SG9665GC Supercapacitor Sony Exmor IMX322 WDR CMOS Sensor DashCam 1080P 30FPS + 32GB microSD card + USB/OTG Android Card Reader + GPS (Best Of - DashCamTalk) : Electronics

and hardwired it with this:

Amazon.com : CELL POWER CPUSB01 12V to 5V MiniUSB Power Adapter with BDP (Battery Discharge Prevention) Low Voltage Cut-Off for Street Guardian SG9665GC (and other mini-USB powered) DashCam products : Electronics Amazon.com : CELL POWER CPUSB01 12V to 5V MiniUSB Power Adapter with BDP (Battery Discharge Prevention) Low Voltage Cut-Off for Street Guardian SG9665GC (and other mini-USB powered) DashCam products : Electronics

I have it wired to an always-hot and the motion detection and G-sensor is on. If the car is hit or something moves in front of the camera it starts recording. While I'm driving it records as well (obviously) because of the motion. So it's always-on.

The hardwire thing has a low voltage cut-off but it's set at 11.6V and is unchangeable so if I were to park the car for several days I'd put it in my garage and unplug the camera, but I think day-day as long as it's driven it won't put that much of a drain on my battery.

It also has a GPS antenna and you can D/L software that will correlate your video with a map of where you were at.

I haven't caught anything dumb yet, but I park differently now, so I can see who comes and goes around my car. I back into spots now, so the front is facing out and the cam picks up all the traffic.

Women drivers scare me. I don't know if it's because they are that bad at driving or that bad at paying attention to what's going on. It's why I park my ride at the end of the lot, as far away from people as possible (although women will still find a way, it lowers the risk of contact). I honestly think your friend was really that clueless (my gf has driven down one way streets before and not even realized it). Anyways I wish you luck bro.

I've invested over $2,500 in my own custom HD surveillance system, accessed remotely, off-site storage and all that jazz.

8 HD cameras on a NVR with WD Purple 12TB of storage allowing just about a month's worth of 24/7 footage.

3 HD Trail Cams to capture license plates at the road frontage, very effective.

Vehicles can't come and go by my house without being captured on camera.

9 custom made engineer grade reflective signs. Idiots that ignore the signs get posted to Craigslist.

Most off-the-shelf stuff is junk and the fee based stuff sold by ADT or similar is over priced imo.
