STOLEN -'07 TL-S NBP-San Gabriel Valley-LA **UPDATE-CAR RECOVERED LOJACK FTW**
#81
No updates as of yet. Still waiting for the call from the detective. I know where my lojack unit is installed. I was there when the technician did it 4 years ago and i saw how it was wired up. Good luck getting to that unit in my car. It would take a whole lot of effort to get to that location!

I install remote starts and have always said the bypass units we use could be used to do this. It is scary how easy it would be. You would still have to know wiring and all that but most cars have the wires you need in the OBD port so "in theory" I have always thought you could build a system that just plugs in and will start the car but you still have to get past that steering lock. I am so confused.
Really hoping you can find out something -

You can grab all the wiring you need right on the column on most cars these days. GM's and Chryslers are easier since you do use the OBD port.
OP can just take a gander at the ignition wiring and see if anything was tapped in. I would also see if the wheel lock still works. Would make sense why the car shut itself off if a remote start was used. Thieves could have just been repeatedly remote-starting or refreshing the run time to keep it going and just not hook up the brake shutoff.

When was the last time you left it at a shop? I could see somebody copying your key, then waiting for a bit til you wouldn't think of them doing it. Glad you got it back. How much does the LoJack install go for? So even if you're subscription is overdue as long as the box still works you're good... I wonder if OnStar would do that too or whatever else the other car brands use now too. The only time I ever had anything stolen from a car was when it was sitting at a paint shop for an extended period, they said somebody broke in the shop but how would I really know it wasn't them.

Many dealerships have master keys and FOBs which these guys could have stolen or acquired through other means. There are criminal organizations that steal cars and ship them to locations around the world where they'll get top dollar, these are major operations that have a lot of manpower and advanced insider knowledge; they tend to use these devices and other sophisticated means of bypassing security. Nothing is ever completely secure. It's possible to reverse engineer the system, that's often what the professional safe crackers do.
It sounds like these guys just happened to get their hands on some special device or knowledge but weren't smart enough to look for tracking devices.

not to sound stereotypical but did they tell you what race they were.. i live in the area.. but i can take a pretty good guess they were mexicans as almost all stolen cars in sgv, elmonte, arcadia, monrovia, duarte, mpk are mostly stolen by mexicans..

I used to do installs for many years. It would be easy to do with a lot of the PK-ALL type bypasses that don't require a key. They are "one time use" devices, but I am sure thieves are willing to pay $40 or less to steal a car. You would just have to get access to the car, hook it up inside with your own sister board or pulse timers that would pulse the correct sequences to get it into programming, leave the car and let the owner drive around. Then come back another time with the bypass already programmed and just hot-wire it.

The PKall is VERY old school at this point. Even with those though I and several other installers have figured out that they are in fact NOT one time use. You can easily get them to program to several vehicles. But now they have FLCans and DBALLs which are usually (definitely with our cars) hooked up with 5 - 7 wires and it controls everything from door locks, alarm, and key bypass. I doubt this is how they stole his car but just saying it would be an easy route to get the car started once youre in the car. But you still have to take stuff apart and get to the wiring so if the OP says nothing was messed up I doubt this is how they did it.

Who knows.

Right, maybe he meant some cars come with programs like Onstar in GM vehicles with a one year subscription or Mercedes-Benz now has a program of their own for stolen cars and soon maybe all manufactures will, I think MB's is an add-on though.

Thats amazing! Im glad you were able to get it back. Low jack did you favor by tracking it for you. Recently over on 4runner forum a member got his car stolen. The "safety connect" feature through Toyota would not track the vehicle since he was not paying for the subscription. Im also waiting to hear how these low lifes stole your car.

So I finally get my car back today but the investigation is still going on so i don't have my laptop back yet. Car is in 1 piece, only damage done was that they broke my navigation disc so now I hav no navigation in my car. They still haven't been able to find out how the car was stolen. Apparently there are now 3 guys involved but the one they caught wont talk. He lawyered up and is not saying a word. He is a repeat offender and will be locked up for at least 6 months for violating parole but as of right now, the charges for gta are not on him yet since they are still waiting for the print results.
They also took my g-tech pro meter so I'm out on that too. Other then that, it doesn't look like anything else is missing.
Also when I got my car, I found a bunch of registration slips belonging to other people in my car. These guys were targeting BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus, 07 and up so now I'm wondering how they got into those cars too. For some reason the cops didn't collect it and left it in my car. Not sure if the detective missed the paperwork by mistake but will contact him again tomorrow.
I also am out 400 on impound fees. It sucks but at the same time, I'm just happy that I got my car back.
Is there anyone out there that can assiste me and steer me in the right direction on getting a navigation disc for my car since I am now gps-less with my car?
Thanks any help will be appreciated.

The comprehensive coverage should cover the impound fees and the Navi DVD, but probably not the G-Tech.

Releasing a car back to its owner WITH evidence still in it.
I wonder if the thieves used your Navi to actually start the car. IDK if that's possible, but with tech these days it wouldn't surprise me. Why else would they even mess with the navi disc?

Maybe they were about to update it , not likely but who knows if they were going to keep this thing around.

Reading the ops recent response, they did. This just confirms my suspicions.

be careful dude.. these guys that get caught.. most likely will want payback and will fuck with your car once they are out.. as you are aware they know where you live as the car was stolen from there.. so watch out for that..

my friend had his BMW X5 stolen out of his apt garage. They found it a week later, missing the radio and rear seats. Police thinks they made a copy of his key, perhaps when it was valet'd, then found his address from docs in the glove box. Then they used some odbII device to bypass the security.
Makes u think 2x about valets...
