Self closing doors feature....

dont recall seeing it here....but does everyone know about this neat feature?

the front doors sort off hold in these two positions when you give them a little push from the closest closed position they will just close on their own......try this with the back doors which are normal...you will see what I mean. I thought it was a cool little feature that nobody pointed out before except for this one dealer I visited.

That's something I didn't know. I'm used to slamming 'em closed on the Contour. Thanks for the tip!

That feature gave me a nice gash above my right eye. I like it tho, but I get flash backs from time to time when closing my door. :licka:

My girlfriend doesn't like this 'feature' and I'm not sure I do either. You have to open the door so it 'locks' into one of those positions or it will close on you. It's great when you are already out of the car, but not-so-nice when you are climbing in or out of it - as acur8ly seems to have found out.

I have noticed that the doors tend to loosen up over time. I have had mine for bout 3 months now and the doors are much more inclined to hold their open position than they were when I first bought it. I can still get it to 'auto-close', as you say, but it takes a bit more effort now than it did originally.

auto-close? i see no such feature. mercedes lexus and bmw has this feature where the door is not completely closed and it will automatically close the door for you when left in that position for a certain amount of time. are you saying that you push the doors outward a bit and the momentum carries them back and closes the door? that is not a feature just physics.

caball...it is actually a feature....unless they screwed up the back doors....as they do not do this. I can't remember any of my cheap cars in the past being able to do this....but maybe it is normal for higher end cars...I don't know.

caball...what I am saying is that when the door is held in the open position at the first preset notch where it kind of locks open.....if you just nudge it off this position towards closing the door will just quietly shut. (again the rear doors cannot do this)

Hmmm...if this is a feature, I hafto say I wish I coulda ordered it without it.

To be honest, I like the feeling of a heavier door. The TL's door, however, to me feels too light, and very notchy. As in, you have to push the door into a preset notch which makes it really easy to accidentally bang it in to stuff when parked close.

Also, watch those shins...you can't close the door slowly, so it's easy to slam into slow legs.

The door almost closed on my mom today and she KICKED it open with her foot.

I told her it's the last time she's even going to see the inside of my car.

yeah some people just do the darndest things to our cars.....like when I pull up for gas and the attendant promply drops my gas cap on the car (rather than the holder)....guess he couldn't tell that the car was one day old. Plus sadly these people just don't care.

This "self closing" feature is so damned annoying. Especially in places where you can't quite swing the door open all the way because you don't want to hit whatever's next to you. In those situations, the door comes closing back on your leg unless you can get your leg inside in time.

I'll tell you, it was one of the first things I noticed about the TL and I liked it. To me it exuded quality to see the doors close 'automatically' with a quality 'thud' sound. BUT, I can also see the flip side of the issue

This feature has bruised my legs and shins. The wind is enough to push the door shut on you when you are leaning in to grab your phone or whatever! I still have a bruise on my calf from 3 weeks ago! Nasty!

I don't know how useful selfclosing doors are...not too me especially it's just "I" driving the car. However, if you watched enough Japanese movies or tv shows you'll see that all their taxi cabs has self opening and closing doors. I thought it was kinda cool. It is something Acura could consider building into future RL models. I am puzzled why cars like MB S series don't have it...another example of "no car is perfect"

Sometimes its very difficult to open the door w/o it springing open to the first lock area. I have to hold the heavy door with 1 hand to get out....

The wing door hinges are cool, but if you have them professionally installed your talking a investment of $ 3500- $ 4000 bucks. Love to see them, so if anyone got money to burn.. GO FOR IT.. you would definatley have a unique TL ride..

Yeah, but if you have self-closing wing doors you could get schmacked right in the noggin.

This has to be a record bump!! (1 month shy of 9 years, lol)

It's built into the doors hinges. Its a mechanical feature so you would have to fabricate new hinges to stop this. I like the feature myself...especially if its windy, or parked on an incline, so the door will stay open. You just have to be patient and let the door rest in the holding points before getting In/out.

ps. My wife hates this feature though

good news
the accord door checkers did eliminate the self closing feature on the tl. i did the driver side door this weekend and took me about 20 mins to swap out the door checkers. the door still feels a little "light" but it has more of a drag which causes the door to no longer self swing back.
great mod for those who are tired of the "automatic closing doors"
i plan on doing the passenger side this coming weekend.

stock tl "groved door checker"

accord "flat" door checker

compared side by side

accord door checker installed

you're welcome

I learned to jump in fast enough so the shift in weight causes the door to close without me having to touch it.

Ditto to this. I have always loved the feature. And when people slam my passenger door I have visions of chocking the life out of them.

^^^I believe that's referred to as the "Jumbo Turn Radius Feature" designed to eliminate front tire wear. Also designed by the same department as the "Crush Drivers Left Femur Door Feature," and the always popular "Bubble Blowing Power Steering Fluid Feature."
