Roof spoiler stolen, for sale on Craigslist in same city 2 days later? Coincidence?
So my car was parked in Philadelphia over the past weekend, and when I got back to it my roof spoiler was stolen. I just put the damn thing on a little over a week ago so I was quite angry.
I go on Craigslist today and sure enough there is one for sale posted today! It's painted NBP (as mine was) and the seller is claiming it's from his car being a total loss. (Craigslist posting HERE).
I purchased it from BMWOEMSHOP on ebay so I have the "receipt", but no pictures of it that I took. There was writing on the bottom of it noting the color and some numbers, but some of that came off with the glue when "whoever" stole it (They have it listed with pictures from BMWOEMSHOP and not real pictures).
I don't know what to do. I don't want to accuse someone if they didn't do anything wrong, but it just seems like too big of a coincidence.

The bigger problem is that anything that is simply taped on like a roof spoiler is candy for all the prick thieves, especially in a city, and on top of that, at least where I am, it's a 4th degree misdemeanor, which means even if the person was caught and went before a judge, he would likely get probation and nothing more.
I had mine stolen in a Walmart parking lot in the middle of the day about 2 years ago- I really liked the look, but never bothered to replace it, as I would find it very frustrating to have it stolen again.
Pricks will be pricks...

I completely agree man. It sucks people are like this. No respect for other people's property.
I too liked the look a lot and I want to get another one, but I'm "gun shy" now thinking it's going to get stolen. Maybe I'll get one more and if that gets ripped off I'll just be done with the whole idea. Thank god the thief didn't damage my car.

Sorry to hear that. You could check it out like if you are interested in buying and see if the bottom has the same damage like you are stating. If so, then it comes down to what you would like to do? Will it be worth it going thru the hassle for a spoiler (regardless these thieves need to get whats coming to them)?
My question is why post a picture of the spoiler from the website (top left hand corner "Acura TL Roof Spoiler BMWOEMshop") and not the actual product itself?
You cant drill/screw a roof spoiler fool

Were those around $85. Just get another one and call it a day.

Matters how much it cost and how strapped you are for cash?
If money is tight as hell and it cost $200 Id do something about it.
If money is tight but you still get to buy goodies here and there and it only cost $100 then fuck it.
To risk sounding like a tough guy, if its worth it hit the person up wanting to buy it. Roll up with some friends in a starbucks and threaten that there are documented marks and a recording.
Chances are its smarter to just move on. Maybe call the local sheriff and call it a day. Or put him on blast on CL. It'll get flagged and removed. Making it a little harder to sell.

OP, did you just use the 3M double sided tape that was provided with your roof spoiler or did you also use another adhesive? I know some members here on azine who have gone the extra mile by literally gluing it to the top of their rear glass to deter theft.

Not worth it all man. This city is out of control, maybe a few years back you could get away with it but not now. I stay far away from Craiglist, didnt you hear this story? http://mobile.philly.com/news/breaki...&id=212611531&
Besides I believe I have an old spoiler at my mom's house that Im not using. I'll check to make sure she hasnt tossed it. Its white and may need some TLC and but its yours if you want it. Just stay safe man, its only a car.

when I had my m3 style lip spoiler stolen off my accord I found it for sale on eBay.
Prior to installing the lip, I engraved my initials and a number on the edge of the lip.
The initials and numbers were very visible in the auction so I notified the police about it.
Guess what happened?
Absolutely NOTHING !
Live and learn. I learned not to buy nice stuff if I plan on leaving the car out in the street overnight when I lived in Queens.

Haha. Thanks everyone! You guys are the shit! I called the police yesterday to file a report, got the run around and was told an officer would call me back, which of course never happened.
I used both the 3M tape and the adhesive that came with it, so it was on pretty good (as well as something glued to glass could be).
Coincidentally, there was white writing on the bottom of it (paint code and some other letters/numbers) from BMWOEMSHOP and came off on the adhesive, some of which was left on my car. I have a piece of it that would line up with the spoiler and was planning on showing this to the police.
It isn't the money, it's the principle. It just burns me that people rip others off without giving a single fuck.
I love the city of Philly too, but most of the people there are scumbags.
I'll buy another one since it's only $79 painted and shipped, I just wanted to share my story and was *kinda* hoping the police would do something.

Had mine stolen a few days ago in Chicago. I know it sucks to have something taken that's yours. As mentioned, i'm just glad there was no damage to the car.
$80 gone - can be replaced.... I'll wait a while before i get another one though.

It was all fun in games what am I going to do? Lol That guy was pissed, he has Ben texting me all day saying he forgot where he got it from and paid a lot more then $80. He still tried to sell it to me. I asked him to send a pic of it with the numbers on the back, he said he would when he gets home if I wanna buy it lol

I wish I took a picture of it before I put it on. This guy probably isn't the guy who stole it, but that convo you had with him is hilarious none the less. Let me know if he sends you a picture of it.

This reminds me of times I had with a VW Scirocco. I had a Kamei air dam stolen at the dorms of all places. Fortunately, I had marked the inside edge of it with my name. Sure enough a quick look at cars in the Dorm parking yielded a Scirocco with exactly my air dam on it. I did not confront the dude but simply unbolted it the last day of school. I transferred to another college and that was it.
Mark the inside edge of the spoiler next time and you'll know for sure.

After reading this I've come to realize I probably should not buy one. I was planning on getting one any payday now as my next add on.
I will bring up 3 things for what its worth for those that add parts to their car and want the ability to track them if stolen.
1. You can purchase an etching kit that allows you to etch a serial number to pretty much anything. The upside is that it is difficult to remove and if you do it right, it won't be easy to notice. I used to add these to vehicles several years ago when I worked at a dealership as a dealer added thing.
2. You can paint with blacklight or UV paint which is unnoticeable. Of course, the thief could just paint over and it would never be seen again but this is an option.
3. Last and my personal favorite, just waiting on the new model to hit the US so I can order one. You can install a dash cam /black box device such as a Blackvue system. I say new model because I want this and it's not for sale yet in the US... http://www.blackvue.com/en/contents/...=view&idx=1064
By the way, very sorry to hear about what happened. Not that it will make you feel better but I've had a dumbass break my window years ago, steal a tach I had mounted to the A-Pillar, and 3 days later it was on craigslist. Seller never responded though.
