Replacing steering wheel on an 04 tl/ Will TL-S Steering Wheel fit?

Hello guys. My steering wheel is in really bad shape from the original owner. The top of the wheel is fading and it becoming hard to grip... It just looks nasty and i've seen good condition wheels on ebay for very cheap. Is it possible to replace the steering wheel without messing with the airbag? Because i am def. not messing with it, if i need to take out the airbag and put it back.. Any input will be appreciated

Don't forget to disconnect the battery. Wait for several minutes and then start disconnecting stuff. I have done mine 4-5 times to replace bulbs and 2 steering wheels- easy but scary:-)

One additional avenue- if you don't want too much expense, you can use a wheelskins cover- they're leather and can be customized to the colors you want- I have them on the TL and my MR-2- not cheap looking at all:

www.wheelskins.com (runs about $45 for a perforated, 2 color wheel cover)

If you're buying a wheel without airbag, it should be relatively cheap.

But like everyone has said, it's a simple procedure. Just make sure the battery is disconnected.

I have purchased leather from a fabric outlet, re-wrapped my old wheel. Eventually, I purchased an ASPEC one. If you want to I can post some pics-- if you like it I can sell it for like 10$+ shipping. I also have another wheel with a re-died top: slight color mismatch-- 10$, i can guarantee the longevity of the dye-- it was my first time doing such thing.

There was a cut underneath-- I filled it in-- not a solid job but I could live with that

small mismatch(the reason I did not want the wheel-- too picky)

I did the cutout-- punching etc, I did not have the machine to go thru leather, so one part I did not do is f*cked by a person who was instructed to match the edges. What you gonna do?! can't redo it-- I would not let them anyway.

Stitching is grey to match the aluminum trim.

I had redone my shifter knob and the leather is holding up.

Why are people so afraid to touch the airbag?

Maybe it's the ~7500lbf of pressure exerted upon deployment, or the +165db sound if improperly handled? Crazy guess.

But can it still deploy after the battery has been disconnected for a while? That's what I don't understand.

Just dont wear staticy clothing and dont drop it. If you want to be safe, wait for 30 mins. Tap your brakes to discharge all the electrical stuff. People ship air bags without problems so you will be fine.

^I'd bet that all 04 - 08 wheels are interchangeable.

Doubtful...once you unplug the connectors underneath the wheel, it won't deploy. You'd need a helluva a lot of static discharge to activate it!

Will the 07 Type-S steering wheel fit 04-06 Tl's

Hello, all. I want to change the steering wheel on my TL. I currently own a 2004. My wheel is very worn and nasty from orginal owner. If i am replacing i want to replace with the- 07-08 TL-S. If i am reusing my old airbag, will the 07 wheel fit?

Thanks in advance.

07, 08 are different wheels, Airbag is different as well, the clock spring is probably different, the mid is on the wheel(04s are on the bezel)

Send it to Don @ Dallas Custom Steering Wheels to get recovered. The only problem is that you won't be able to drive your car for a few days but Don's turnaround time is only 2 days....and you will have a wheel that is better than new!

I recently picked up a complete minus the airbag steering wheel from an 07-08. I will be attempting to retrofit this into my '04 6MT along with rewiring all the controls minus the display switches to my car. I will make a seperate thread and DIY soon.

you can't put the type-s wheel on the 04-06, thats what one of the mods told me, when i asked the same question. yuo woul d have to heavily modify the pins and everything to get it to fit.

What pins?

The 04-08 TL wheel spline is the same. I called NRG and asked which hub I would use on an 08 and an 04, they told me the same as the RSX/TSX/S2000/EP3 Si. I'm going to see if I can use the stock clockspring, if not I'll buy a new 07-08 one they're only 54 dollars. I've seen 2JZ's and V8's swapped into S2000's, I've seen a Center Hand Drive RSX...trust me, this is not impossible.

Ok, well... i wanted to put the type-s or at least the 07-08 wheel on my 05 TL. made a thread, and almost everyone told me that it was extremely difficult. your going to have to buy the WHOLE steering wheel including the airbag. A mod told me it would cost $$$, l think like almost a grand.

But if you do it, can you post some pics? I really wanted this mod, I think the 07-08 steering wheels looks way sexier. If it's just purchase the wheel part, and mounting it, then it sounds easy enough, but I have my doubts that this will work. best of luck

It will not cost 2-3 grand to swap, maybe it you buy everything brand new but who is dumb enough to do that? The only thing that is going to be an issue like djbonsu said is the wiring. I'm getting the eletrical manuals for both years and will figure out if I need to change the clock spring or not.

I can tell this guy is left handed from the stitching

Here is the part number you need: 90134-S6A-A80

My Acura dealer didn't have one so I called a close Honda dealer and they had it in stock, plus it was cheaper.

Here is my stripped air bag bolt:

Here is what I used to get that stupid bolt out (They have it at sears!):

Niiiice. Thanks guys. So even though its a rounded off head, it will still remove it?! I was contomplating drilling them out but this is less err...scary? lol. Last thing I want is the airbag exploding in my face because I accidentally drilled into it.
