Hey Gang,

I have my TL on its first extended road trip and I have been stunned to see the price of Premium here in Michigan. Here is the comparison from where I live in New Hampshire:

• $2.309 - Regular 87-AKI
• $2.459 - Mid-Grade 89-AKI
• $2.609 - Premium 93-AKI

Michigan:

• $2.459 - Regular 87-AKI
• $2.959 - Mid-Grade 89-AKI
• $3.559 - Premium 93-AKI

So, is Michigan Premium fuel made with some sort of an Unobtainium additive the rest of the country doesn't need/require?

Welcome to the fun of gasoline distribution....I have also wondered why there is such a spread on 87 vs 91+ around. The only thing that comes to mind is that possibly NH 93 is E10 while Michigan isn't? That is usually the only thing that drives that huge jump around here (KC). My local QT carries about a $.50 premium for 91 E10, while Hy-Vee has about $.70-.80 premium for 91 Ethanol free. Don't recall ever seeing that hitting $1.10 premium though.

I generally don't even pay attention to the prices anymore since you can't really do much about it besides get annoyed/angry.

New Hampshire does sell E10 state wide, but if I'm not mistaken, so too does Michigan. I asked my brother who live here and he said it is extra gasoline taxes for non-Regular fuels. Hmmmm....

Fortunately it's only for a week and ~2,500 miles.

They pass off 91 as premium here in Arizona, California and Nevada. Lucky us!

Premium is way overpriced in the midwest. Prices used to be like what you guys have in New Hampshire. Not sure when they started diverging so significantly.

Not certain as to where you were in MI, but looking on line, Flint, premium is $2.88, Grand Rapids, $2.89.
However one can find prices @ $3.50 p/gal also.
If one were to look for the highest premium gas prices in NH, Hooksett $3.59, Ossipee $3.69.

Guess just the wrong place/wrong time.

Ahhh, that doesn't count, that's on the toll road; can't say I've ever seen a toll-road gasoline station with reasonable prices, regardless of which state.

I'm not sure about MI but in the Chicago area its from extra city and county taxes and fees that fluff up the price. I haven't seen premium under $3 in the Chicago burbs in a long time. $3.55 is about normal for my area.

FYI, there is a glut of regular gasoline and not so much of "distillates" which help make higher octane gas hence such the wide spread between premium and regular.

Sorry, not buying; like I wrote in my original post, there is only a fifteen cent gap between 87 and 89, and another fifteen cent gap between 89 and 93 in New Hampshire. Ain't no way such additives cost less in New Hampshire than in the rest of the country.

I just attended a wedding this weekend in Holland; a good time was had by all.

In all fairness, I did find a single station in Michigan where Premium was $2.999, so not all stations are up there in the $3.50+ category. I was so happy to get back to New Hampshire last night and fill my tank with Premium for $2.559 per gallon.

I live about 20 min away from Holland. The beach at Holland State Park is awesome and the people in the area are first class.

Yup, had a great time. Last Wednesday I drove 970 miles from New Hampshire all of the way to Grand Rapids (via Ohio, my wife forgot her passport); when we got there I asked a friend of a friend for a nice watering hole and was directed to the Gravity Taphouse and Grill. Yeah, the dinner and the IPA was great. I think that was the first time I was in Grand Rapids proper since I, geez, something like 1961; my first impression was much better this time than in 1961.

Hmm, I'll have to look into that place. I work right downtown and it's a very busy and vibrant atmosphere. I believe it's the second largest city in Michigan now, right behind Detroit.

Last month I was heading up to the Franconia notch to do some hiking just after the hurricane hit TX. I paid around $3.60/gallon Premium 93-AKI at the Hooksett rest stop. I'm sure it was more expensive due to the rest stop but the GF didn't fuel her vehicle beforehand.

True. But we have other things that are outrageously priced, like healthcare.

It could be worse. We could be a country that has registration fees based on engine displacement, for one thing, or excessive inspection fees for cars older than a particular year or with more than x mileage.

Here in New Hampshire the annual registration fees are based on A) the MSRP of the vehicle, B) whether the vehicle was purchased/leased new or used, and C) how old the vehicle is. My 2006 TL costs about $200, my wife's 2016 Mazda3 is more like $700.

down here in TX doesn't matter you own a $60k car or $600 car the anual registration renewal is $89.00 and best of all I own 3 cars and don't pay a dime for "Vehicle Town Tax".... We have tolls road instead so if you use then you pay for it but you don't have to.

I'm in Edmonton, AB. We are considered to be cheaper for gas than most anywhere else in the country.

To to add insult to injury, I'm paying 4.25+ pe gallon, but it's only 91 octane. There is no 93 here. I have the option of using 94, but it has a ton of ethanol in it. No thanks.
