So i took out the rear and mid muffler and the resonator and replaced them with magnaflow, it doesnt sound ricey at all but my goodness is that humming noise annoying as ****

At 2500 rpm it huma like crazy and it makes the whole cabin rattle , its killing my experience driving the TL to the point where i'd rather drive my 96 accord that doesnt make that dam noise


The problem is that i did it a long time ago and i dont have the rear muffler anymore, i only have the mid muffler and resonator part, but i want it back to stock sounding, is it possible without the original acura rear mufflers? I dont want to lose power either but i doubt rear mufflers make a difference

Dynamat the car interior then.

A friend of mine had Magnaflow kit on his car years ago, but it was an H2. The humming of that exhaust drove me nuts in that car.

I'm surprised you didn't think that by putting Mags on a TL would boost loudness in your cabin. I have Mags and I know the cabin is loud at 2000rpm but for me, that's music to my ears. You should of just left the stock cats, straight piped with either a Dynomax or Magnaflow resonator and called it a day.

look for stock exhaust on the black market, here. loook on craigslist, check ebay, look at junk yards.


or you can try adding the mid-muffler back + a resonator.

Look up something called a helmholtz resonator. I had the exact same problem as you, basically a brain rattling drone noise, especially with the windows up. This added resonator is basically a piece of pipe that comes off before/after your magnaflow and is capped off. If you are able to pinpoint the frequency that the sound is the worst this pipe basically cancels out the noise as the air goes down the capped pipe and bounces back. I think I ended up choosing a pipe that was something like 26 inches long? Can't exactly remember. For me the humming is slightly still there but WAYY less "drone-y".

Try putting the resonator back on to kill some drone. Try putting the muffler back on to kill some sound. Pretty simple, you dont need to overcomplicate it.

This is the correct answer. The rear mufflers are not what manages the interior drone for the most part. That is what the resonator is for. Start putting those pieces back into the path one by one until the issue is resolved.

basically, go back to stock. I don't know about you guys, but i like the sound of the engine over a noisy ass exhaust anyday. The quieter the exhaust, the better.

I'm getting physics and shit as an answer. I finally figured it out. Instead of putting all pieces back together. Take your car to a exhaust shop, ask them for a helmholtz resonator, they'll know what it is. If you wanna know now, basically, its a 90 degree exhaust pipe that goes off your resonator and it has a cap at the end of it. They have several different sizes, if you're running dynomax billet or whatever, get a 26 inch.

Ive grown to appreciate the induction noise as well. I like the sound of this 3.2 sohc actually. Sometimes I think about adjusting something in the exhaust, but for me the only piece I would really be interested in is j pipe replacement maybe with hiflow cat attached. I like when the exhaust level "matches" the intake sound level. Now that is subjective yes, but I have had a variety of exhausts and truly with exhaust I found you get what you pay for.

One of my absolute favorite setups ive had was on my 2.3sohc accord. It had DC sport header, homemade CAI, and a twin loop muffler design DC sport exhaust. It was really expensive for a single outlet exhaust but damn did it sound good. The looped mufflers kept noise levels down but it was still 3" so flow increased. My rx7 had the racing beat cat back, I liked that enough I never even used the hiflow cat I had lol. Letting off the gas in the rotary at 6,000rpm sounds like an f1 type of hi pitched drone. I loved that, but the car was so slow it didnt match up in speed to noise level when full throttled.

For me, removing the 3rd cat (via J-pipe), removing the mid muffler, replacing the resonator with a Dynomax but leaving the stock mufflers in place gave me the desired improvement in sound at idle and full throttle while keeping my car very quiet otherwise.

Yes exactly me too. The j pipe seems like it gives a good amount of HP, esp if you have a busted flex pipe.

Mines not busted yet but the PO did a number on smashing up the OEM j pipe. ...and maybe some of it was me too lol.

For just general road noise (once you address the exhaust issues), most auto parts stores sell rubberized sound deadening coatings. Spray them up in your rear wheel wells (also blacks them out nicely) and it does a nice job cutting down noise from the back end of the car.
