Oh yeah, but for a short term gig it sure can be a hell of a ride.

I bought my car in May of 2017 and it had a weak clutch when I bought it, weak being defined as totally acceptable when driven normally, but it would slip when I started to romp on it. I finally had the clutch replaced in April of this year, roughly 20,000 miles later.
  • Timing belt services on Honda V6 engines is a pretty common procedure, I wouldn't stress about having a dealer do the job, just find a shop familiar with Honda V6s and you'll be good to go.
  • Good to know that makes me feel better. I'll say 90% with the cosmetic items factored in. May pickup some of the type s rims later and keep the current ones for winter tires.
  • Ok I'll feel how it is on the test drive. Planning ahead since I've heard it can be a $2k+ job.
  • Figured it was pretty simple but also wasn't sure since the clutch was so involved. Maybe I'll look into diy.

Doing the clutch is not trivial; it requires dropping the subframe and supporting the engine before dropping the transmission. When I had mine done, given the subframe needed to come down, I had the rear main seal, all six motor/transmission mounts, the stabilizer bar bushings and end links replaced in addition to the clutch.

don't let the clutch job scare you from buying one, my brother just picking up a TSX MT at 174k miles the clutch feels strong and no slippage. However noted the clutch job on the TL is around 8-10 hours of labor, I wouldn't loosing sleep much over a MT unless its in certain color combo, mileage and condition.

$1900 for a timing belt job?!!!!! Waaaaaayyyyyy overpriced. Should be anywhere from $700-1000 parts and labor, belt, tensioner, and water pump.

That's what I thought. They also included spark plugs which I haven't heard before but that was only $300 so not sure where the rest of the price came from. Even the Acura dealership said $1300

Too funny, I'm currently in Denver having Turkey Day with my son (first time in four years as he has been in the Navy). Shortly after mustering out of the service he bought a brand spanking new Fiesta ST, and yesterday he took my 2006 TL 6MT out for a few laps around the local mountains, and his exact quote was, "That shifter in your TL takes a dump on the shifter in my Fiesta!"

I haven't had a chance to drive his Fiesta yet much less his old K2500 GMC with a 5-Speed; I'll report back when I do.

Haha wow that's amazing I can't wait to hear what you think about the fiesta.

I'd say the best thing about the fiesta ST was there was no getting used to it. I jumped right in and everything felt natural like I'd been driving it for years. The TL has a much more solid, reassuring feel to it though. Both very good in my opinion but then again I never spent more than 10 minutes in either of them.

Right after I drove the fiesta I drove a Dodge Dart and that was one of the worst driving experiences I couldn't wait to get out of that car. I don't know how they made a car look so small on the outside but make it feel like it's a boat when you're driving it. I'm just hoping there was something wrong with this one and they're not all like that.

My '05 is still on original clutch with 175k miles. It is more about how well it was driving, not how hard the car was driven. I have owned mine for the past 10 years and 140k miles with only three people having driven it more than just around the dealer parking lots. Between myself, my wife, and my brother, we generally know how to drive a manual. There is for sure a learning curve on the TL...and that is key...how long that learning curve lasts.

I got the full 105k service done at my local Honda dealer for less than that. It wasn't cheap, but it was close to half of what my local Acura dealer wanted. Search the forums for cost estimates on the timing belts. They range from $300-2500 depending on where and exactly what was included or excluded from the job. I picked Honda over local shop due to proximity to dealer, OE parts, loaner vehicle (didn't end up using), clean waiting room, and price difference was less than $100 from independent shops I called.

Seems to depend greatly on the location. Called another Honda dealership in the area and they quoted $999 for the timing belt. The first one I may have well been asking about a BMW

No offense to the OP, BUT

I think a civic or an accord would be better suited for you.

You’re just wasting people time by going there with no intention of buying the car right then & there. If you actually wasted 3 hours to drive for a car, why wouldn’t you at least offer something resonable even with those issues since you are already there?

To me the seller sounds like he was just trying to protect himself from random strangers on Craigslist, you even admitted you didn’t take a pic of the VIN WHEN YOU WERE THERE... WTF?

Btw, TB service should not cost more than $1k

Completely agree a Civic or Accord would be appropriate for my situation. I just don't want them I've bought cars that are sensible and now I want something fun without too much of a sacrifice in mileage and reliability.

And seriously?
I tried to take a picture of the VIN and he said no he didn't want me to. He wouldn't show me any of the records he said he had. Refused to take it to a mechanic. I offered to drive it there, he said no. He said he wouldn't drive it there, completely refused to let a mechanic see it. I would've bought the car if I knew what or if there was an issue

I get being cautious but really

KBP's must not like changing owners
My brother was the previous owner of my unicorn for 7yrs/100K miles, 100% trouble-free for him. Literally 30 days after signing the title over to me my pass side CV busted leaving me stranded on the side of the road, a day after my birthday
He was nice enough to waive my first months payment

I think I've found the same car. I wonder if it's the same seller

Wow, looks like the exact car. Same pictures, mileage and price but in Delaware and a different phone number.

He told me he sold it wonder if it fell through.

I'm in North Jersey but that hasn't stopped me from posting my TL in North/Central/South Jerz, NYC, and Pocono's

The poster could be on these boards, saw us bad-mouthing his listing and changed his # to make it appear to be different.

I drove 5 hours to a Mercedes Benz dealership to look at a 2014 ML63. I walked out of their dealership when they couldn't meet me at $250.00 counter offer on the vehicle. I personally don't like black vehicles, but I still went out of my way to look at this vehicle. It was a certified vehicle and had issues like the rotors had some serious groves on the rotors and the "Detail" job was far from a real detail when they didn't even bother to clean off the white paint that got thrown on the rocker panels / doors when the dipshit ran over paint. Sometimes you know when to say no and move on regardless of time wasted.

FYI: Most dealerships charge over 1K for a complete timing belt service.

You made a post about swirls and paint correction. Since you're in North NJ, take your vehicle to Detailers domain for a paint correction and possibly a nanolex coating.

Just my 2cents...

The fact that the title of his Craigslist ad says "very rare", to me that means he has some indication of what this car is, especially in that condition (if those pics are not altered). But then again pics can be deceiving.

Anyways, for someone who knows that much, he should have priced it higher as its worth at least 10k....but then again his behaviour of not letting you basically do more than sit in the car.....maybe there is something wrong with it....
OR
he just didn't take you seriously.....for any number of potential reasons....

Fake news.

Depends on your location.

My Honda dealer wanted to charge me $900 my Acura dealer wanted to charge me $1100-1200. Another Honda dealer up the road wanted $1200.

So you physically viewed the vehicle and were met with resistance with doing anything except sitting in it?

This was in reference to the dealerships I was calling and the previous comment. She seemed confused I was asking about an Acura at a Honda dealership.

Ok so need some opinions.

I drove the 05 6mt and it would grind going into 3rd gear 50% of the time. He said it did it from new and he's just dealt with it. It didn't have a fluid change recently so don't know if the friction modified stuff I've seen talked about could fix that or not.

That was my main concern but there were a few other things. A lot of vibration in the brakes under heavy braking figured new pads and rotors would probably fix that. And some static in the speakers. Some scratches in the body and corrosion on the rims too but the interior was in really good shape.

He has someone else looking at it this afternoon then I was going to arrange to have it taken to an Acura dealership for a PPI. It has 100k and he's asking for 4700 negotiable.

I was looking to have this as a commuter car for at least the next 5 years and 50k miles is the grinding gears something that should turn me away?

For that price you can afford to get a lot fixed. Regarding third gear, my 2006 did just as you describe; changing the MTF with ACDelco Synchromesh Friction Modified cured the grind instantly.

Maybe I missed it. Where are you from? I have a buddy who might be selling his 05 6MT, unless he already sold it.

That's what I was thinking but I didn't want it to add up too much with possibly a rebuilt transmission. Good to know the MTF fluid fixed your issue. Quick question though...do you just drop the pan then replace with the new fluid? Heard you shouldn't do a flush but also dropping the pan doesn't get all the fluid out.
