How bad is my transmission?
2008 TLS MT
This car was my first manual and I’ve been driving for upwards of 6 months now. With that being said, some of my issues could potentially be ruled out as bad driving.
- While I’m in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear my car jerks at 1500-2000 rpm. If I’m driving through a parking lot or a neighborhood it’s just an uncomfortable ride when I let off the gas.
- When I shift up into 2nd or 3rd more often than not I get a jerk back like the car needs more time to catch up to my shift? Same applies for down shifting as well.
- 3rd gear pops out. Not often but it happens.
- Down shifting into 2nd gear often results in a winding / grinding noise.
Previous owner does not have documentation for transmission fluid being changed or the switch to synchromesh oil. But he does have documentation for some work down at certified transmission including:
Clutch assembly replaced
Flywheel replaced
Master cylinder replaced
Slave cylinder replaced
Hydraulic system bled
This work was done at 97k miles and the car is currently at 137k. I’m looking for some insight from people who have had these issues before and what the issue might be.
Thanks guys.

gm fluid will hopefully fix the 3rd gear pop-out. Check your engine mounts also!

3rd gear pressure switch.
I have a 2006 TL and my transmission failed at 116k miles. The shop that did the rebuild suggested that I have the fluid and the 3rd gear pressure switch to be changed at 30k miles and not 60k miles. He told me that 95% of transmission failure in TL's are because of the 3rd gear pressure switch.
