Opinions on Timing Belt Service

Yo all,

OK - so to start, my 07 TL Type-S has about 59,500 miles currently (yes that is correct).

Either way, this month I am set for my replacement timing belt service. But I have 2 differing opinions on the additional work for the water pump.

One of my mechanic friends says it's just easier to replace the water pump at the same time with the timing belt because they are already in the same area for the work, and both components are already 10 years old.

One of my other mechanic friends says to just replace the timing belt for now because the TL only has under 60k miles, and that it is better to keep original components as long as they and any important seals are still in great shape.

Now, I live in Las Vegas (one of the kings of the desert), and this TL has been here it's entire car life.

Overall, doing the water pump work at the same time as the timing belt will cost about an extra $265 in parts & labor.

Which way should I lean? Timing belt service only, OR Timing belt & water pump service??

Would like to make a final decision before the end of the weekend. Thanks!

How much will the water pump cost you to replace later? Then compare the now vs later costs.

Kick your second friend to curb he is wrong. Better to keep the original components? Really? Its not like theyre replacing an engine its a wearable part, that argument doesnt hold water. Ask him will be pay labor to have it replaced post TB job?

Every place I priced for the service included water pump parts and labor and it was all under $700. Mine has even less miles than yours and had it done at Honda dealer.

LOL, the second guy is kinda more of a cool dude I know than a friend...dude works for Acura as part of service techs but also owns a TL Type-S 6-speed. I was already set on doing both TB & WP, but this guy put a seed of doubt in my tiny brain.

Guess the guy was trying to make me pay out of the ying-yang now and later! Shoulda used my common sense this time around.

if you gonna do TB then just get the WP replace because it sit right behind the TB, also note ask your mechanic to check the oil pump assembly for leakage its easier for you to deal with it now rather than later.

It's about $75 extra for the pump and another $40 for the coolant. So he's charging you $150 in labor to pop 5 bolts and pour in 2 gallons of coolant?
