Oil filter question - which model
I see Honda makes two different oil filters for the TL. One has a suffix of A01 and the other has a suffix of A02. What is the difference (if any). Thanks.

After seeing several threads & articles where the different filters were cut open, I regret to inform you that the A02 filter made by Honeywell is total crap. It's filter media is tiny compared to the the A01 part. I guess even Honda has to cut costs sometimes. The A01 filter was made by Filtech and is a rather nice piece but is getting harder & harder to find.
For the absolute best OEM Honda filter (and arguably the best filter around) I would have to recommend the S2000 oil filter (by Toyo-Roki of Japan). The part number is 15400-PCX-004 and cost between $6 & $10 depending on where you get it. This filter far surpasses all other Honda filters with the same gasket diameter & thread pitch. It's also bigger than even the original Honda filter and absolutely packed with filter media and high quality components...

For the absolute best OEM Honda filter (and arguably the best filter around) I would have to recommend the S2000 oil filter (by Toyo-Roki of Japan). The part number is 15400-PCX-004 and cost between $6 & $10 depending on where you get it. This filter far surpasses all other Honda filters with the same gasket diameter & thread pitch. It's also bigger than even the original Honda filter and absolutely packed with filter media and high quality components...

***Edit: Just found that the newest PCX filter is now made in the US by Filtech (who is owned by Toyo Roki). There are only the slightest differences in that there are fewer holes (bigger though), and the glue inside is different (no biggie). Same filter otherwise...

I'd like to use a premium filter for my TL so I'm considering the Mobil 1, Napa Gold and Purolator Pure One models. Is any one of these superior to the other or are there all about the same. I'd prefer limiting my choice to thewse models since they all are readily available in my area.

After reading many oil filter responses on this and other sites, one must ask, how many destroyed engines have you seen that are due to a poor oil filter, especially when the oil filters exceed the manufactuer's requirements and the oil is changed regularly? Ever see the size of a Turbo Rotary oil filter? Do you really believe that a cannister the size of a paint can is necessary?
I've driven well over a million miles and have never had an oil related problem on any of our vehicles. I did destroy a few engines while drag racing (BB Chevy's) though, but not oil related.
Just buy a filter and put it on the car, but I'm certain the next item to be addressed will be the oil manufacturer.

Yea...ive heard fram referred to as "Orange Death". Personally I use the Mobil 1 M110 Filter. Ive heard good things about the Purolator here on AZ (along with the M110) The M110 is noticeably heavier than the comparable Fram filter. Mobil 1 uses synthetic fibers versus Fram paper element (reason why its probably heavier cuz it more dense). Anyways, I would tell you to go with Mobil 1, but it is more expensive than a normal paper filter. Hope this helps! Oh, i forgot to mention, on the rest of my family's cars, we have only used FRAM....never anything else, and never had any problems. I just wanted to use something premium for the TL.

Yes Fram is made by Honeywell. Yes the A02 filter is the same as fram filter. Yes Fram is total CRAP! Here is a comparison of the internals of a Fram vs the A01 Filtech filter. The fram has cardboard end-caps, less filter medium, and fuzzy filter material that will introduce more fibers into the oil than it probably filters out (before the cardboard ends break1 apart). Also the fram bypass valve is weak and will allow oil to bypass the filter long before other quality filters...
If you want an absolute top quality filter for less than the cost of a Mobil-1, which doesn't have nearly as much filter media but still uses quality components, get the Filtech PCX S2000 filter from your local dealer.

Yea, i read that here on AZ, but when I look it up on the Mobil 1 book at Pep Boys, it says M1-110. I know both are compatible, but if M-104 has more girth, i guess it has a larger capacity (assuming the length is the same)? Well, I look into it and go with M-104 if its larger.
Oh, and I just have to do this....GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER! LOL! Hahahaa, maturity.... its for people over 30!

I looked up filter recommendations two weeks ago when at AutoZone (I was just curious since I already know which filter to use). Their book only listed on Mobil 1 filter for the 2004 TL.. the M1-104. However, I do recall seeing the M1-110 recommended in some other quides. I suspect the M1-104 has a little more filter element surface area since is is a slightly beefier filter than the M1-110.

I've been using the M1-104 on my 04TL from first oil change.. Like SB stated above, it is definitely the "listed" M1 filter for the 04TL. However, starting in 05, M1 listed the required filter for the TL as the M1-110..
Now, the 110 is smaller in diameter so my only guess would be folks were smashing the heck out of the right suspension and somehow crushed the filter within the lower control arm...? Or a minor change to shape/geometry of the lower control arm in 05TL's+ occurred..?
Either way, it's obvious from this board that folks with all years of TL's have been using the M1-104 with no issues.
On another note, some of the additional weight one feels with the M1 filters is due to them using a heavier gage metal on their housings.

M-104 has to have more filter media than M-110. I'm thinking about cutting my M110 on my Civic open once I'm up for an oil-change...

heck i drive my tl to this mcdavid honda that has 19.99 dollar oil change coupons online print out..(adds up to 30 buck after taxes and disposal fees)
before i tell them i have a coupon, i let them finish up the oil change and i show the coupon at the cashier when they finished..so in away they thought i was going to pay full price but instead i use my coupon =) to insure myself that the dealer didnt change my service type due to my coupon
30 buck is fine with me as long i get honda filter and oil =)

Man, this thread is making me feel a little woozy about my oil filter. I got my oil changed at a place called Oil Can Henry's and I'm sure they aren't using the best quality stuff probably not even fram oil filter. Time to ebay the filters. How much do they go for by the way?

This is a good find. So, any year S2000 filter will work? I'm assuming they're all the same? I would like a bigger filter because they're less likely to bypass at high rpms.

What about the TLS? the KnN is the only one that fits it and its like 12 bucks just for that filter im used to using the mobil one on my old car it was a lil cheaper whatever n e help will be appreciateed

Ive always used Wix filters and been completly satisfied....I work at O'reilly's so I get alot of inside feedback from mechanics who tear down and rebuild as well as from the product reps...I've heard too many times not to use fram. They just dont protect. I know our house brand filters (microguard) are manufactured by puroilator, so I assume they are decent.
And if by any chance you do use wix filters, you can use their bulk filters "pro-tec" and buy a case of 12 for around 20-30 bucks....same filter just doesnt have all the fancy artwork on it...

I don't know who told you that, but the 3G TL-S uses the same oil filter as every other 3G TL. The oem part number is 15400-PLM-A01. That means the S2000 filter or any other brand of "honda" filter will fit. You can use the Mobil1 M110 for the smaller size, or the M104 for the larger old-style Honda can with more filter media.
All S2000 filters are the same. Whenever Honda issues a new filter for a particular model, the old filter is discontinued.

It is yet to be seen weather or not the Mobil1 "extended performance" M104 filter is actually any better than the OEM S2000 PCX filter. M1 used to have less filter media inside, but both filters have changed since that comparison was done several years ago. In the end, both filters are good, and I recommend both to anybody. I personally use the M104 on my TL, Civic & CRX simply because it's available where I buy my oil (which probably saves me in gas money )...

I've got a couple M104s for my '02 TL-S around (still own the car). I never thought of trying to spin it on to my '06. D'oh! I currently have the M110 on.
It's too bad that Purolator stopped making the even bigger 24458 filter. I was using that on the '02 for years, but I'm back to the regular size 14459 (M-104 equiv), because I can't find the 24458 anymore.
I'll give the M104 a spin on the '06 at the next oil change (probably after Christmas, at this rate).

FWIW - I read through the Toyo-Roki vs Filtech discussion on the S2K board. They implied that the original Toyo-Roki PCX filter had a higher pressure bypass valve than "normal" Honda filters. Based on what I've read, I will assume the Filtech PCX filter does as well.
I am willing to assume also that a marginally higher pressure on the bypass valve will not be detrimental to my TL-S. But if it's is a concern, the Mobile 1 filter sounds like an easy alternative.
