Question (NOOb alert) Question on Price Range

Hey everybody! This is my first post so please forgive me if I missed this question elsewhere or am not abiding by any rules.

THAT BEING SAID. I am about to graduate college and am 100% going to buy an 06' TL. When I was a kid and that car came out I knew one day I would own one. What I'm really here to ask about is a realistic price range. My budget is up to 13K. I've found one that is in pristine condition for about that price - it has ~65,000 miles. What kind of a deal do you all think that is? Also, I realize condition is a large factor in buying a car but could anyone do a ballpark range of cost per range of miles? For example: for 60-100k miles pay 8-13 grand.

I really look forward to hearing everyone's insight. Please please please feel free to leave any notes, ideas and experiences that you think would benefit me as I embark on this (my first) car buying endeavor.

THANKS!

David

PS - Also can't wait to start modding the shit out of this thing! 255/40 17's, TSW Nurburgring's, exhaust, subwoofer, backup camera etc.

Thanks again in advance.

All things being equal (in good shape, maintenance done, clear title, etc.) I would buy a higher mileage 07/08 Type S for 13k. Good luck with your search and welcome to AcuraZine.

If you're buying aftermarket wheels, go with at least 18's. 17's are too small.

Go for a type s it's a much better car all around and you can get one for your price.

I currently have tsw Nurburgring wheels as my setup so ask me any questions you want. I'll help you start by saying get the 18x9 +32 specs all around with 235/40 tires

Yeah with your budget I would look into a type s or at the very least any 07-08 base model. The 2004-2006 TL automatics have transmission problems. The 2007-2008 TL's have a completely different auto transmission that is much more reliable. The only reason you should be even considering a 2004-2006 is if it is a 6 speed manual.

I bought an 07 with 68K miles on the clock (clean in and out) for 12K about a month ago. At 13K go for the 07/08 or even a type s.
That 06 is a bit overprice no matter how clean it is.

Hey Sockr1. Thanks for your response. I will def keep that in mind when I decide to purchase wheels. Also, the overwhelming response seems to be avoid 04-06 (Although I must say for some reason I am attracted to those wheels, interior etc. (can't help what I like)) and go for a Type-S. Si? Also, I am in California where everything seems to be more expensive. :-/

Man, I would love to stumble on this deal. Unfortunately where I live I think there may be a California Tax. Fucking everything is more expensive here :-/. What's cool is that I have until about June. I hope something finds its way to me by then!

Make sure you budget for any un-expected repairs/maintenance as well.

The 04-06 TLs don't get much love and it is expected as there are AT issues. (may base TL buyers probably neglect too much on AT maintenance as well...not to mention likely under-emphasized ATF interval change by Honda...) Though for me, I found a very well taken care of 06 TL, with all maintenance from dealer since mile 0 (lady bought it brand new) and the price was very good ($7500). So far it hast 176k miles on the 5AT and shifts super smooth.

Would've liked to get a Type-S myself but the price was bit out of my budget (would've been at least about 14k for a good example back 2 years ago).

So do your due dilligence on balancing between budget and finding the right car. You can find meticulously maintained 04-06 base TLs....or abused/neglected 07-08 TL-S. Lower priced 07/08 and Type-S models may need sooner repair/maintenance and have less than stellar history so keep that in mind.

For me I think it was a good purchase of that car as it was taken care of...and I essentially got it for half the cost of what a decent Type-S would've cost...I know the Type-S is a great great car but for me...not worth 2x the price tag.

Man. You kind of explained exactly what my logic was. Find a pristine, babied 06 - and I think I have. Single owner, only 65000 miles. I am yet to drive it but kind of have that feeling in my gut. That being said everyone recommending 07-08 models really makes me doubt my logic. Fortunately for me I have a friend who is a mechanic who has been there with me every step of the way. I had one for $8200 with 95k slip out of my hands the other day because I didn't have my financing in place. Fml

You said "(may base TL buyers probably neglect too much on AT maintenance as well...not to mention likely under-emphasized ATF interval change by Honda...)" I assume you meant many but do you think you (or anyone) could explain what you mean by that?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah typo. I meant to say "many." But of course that may be unfair....though it's a general comment on the avg buyer who has no interest/knowledge of meticulous AT care. Which is why it's great to find a well documented car.

Even though my prior owner had all documents, the ATF filter looked all jacked up when I replaced it (looks like dealer either didn't know or care to replace so I'm glad I was doing stuff myself. So even in well documented cars there can be areas of neglect.

Make sure to visit this thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/third-g...ewbies-553554/ for tons of DIY maintenance/repair/mod knowledge.

I also like the base '04-06 wheels better than the 07-08 base wheels, but it's a moot point since I only run them 4 months out of the year. And I like the 04-06 gauges/center stack on the 04-06 better. The '07-08 base has lower fog lights, deeper front grill, turn signal mirrors, and a slightly different rear bumper, all of which are nice updates. I also like the base 07-08 tails the best out of all three, which is why I switched to them on my '06.

OP...there are countless threads on AZ of owners who's trannys have failed, I would say most from lack of maintenance and care...check out those threads...many of the guys are changing their tranny fluid every 15K miles or less to prolong tranny life

^^While I think there is some truth to the Honda AT troubles...we also have to be aware that on a forum like this we will get a sampling bias as since people will google for issues and come to this forum or vocalize issues.

There won't be nearly as much threads on how great their 5AT is. (unless you get some high mile stories like that 500k TSX, or the high mileage thread has examples of high mile cars as well) And of course it would be hard to control for confounding variables of how well maintained the AT was and if it was abused or driven hard.

Took me about 1mo of daily multi website searching to find the 06 TL I felt comfortable with. And I think it will take dedication of that calibre to find a well kept car. I usually will never go 2nd hand used lots or dealers since they have woeful/zero knowledge care about the car (just the sale).

Usually it is a private party with 1-owner preferred WITH very meticulous records kept annually.

OR if you find a well reputable car or community member on here as well.

Yo. Confounding variable huh? Sounds like a research based social science class. That being said, private party 1 owner meticulous patient searching is exactly what I'm doing. However the one I have been eyeing is from a dealer :-/. 65000 miles and in what looks to be perfect shape minus what has been potentially identified as an irregular gap between hood and fender (from respected AcuraZine contributor). I would share the link for all to see but I'm somewhat worried someone might swoop in on me. its 12750 and the fucking guy wont come down. Been in the showroom for 190 days! Any suggestions on how to beat him up on the price? (from anyone)

Would love to hear strategies on how to get the price down. I've done my fair share of reading and I think I am well informed but any secret tricks of the trade would be great!
