New 3G TL Owner, some basic questions

Hi folks,

I recently bought my moms' white 2008 Acura TL w/ Nav. She LOVED the car, but she has a bad back and was having trouble getting in and out of it, so she switched back into an SUV. My previous car was on its last legs and I was struggling with the thought of a car payment on top of student loan payments and living costs, so I bought the Acura for a decent price, and its paid off!

It currently sits at around 68,000 miles and in the next few weeks I will be graduating from college and starting a new job! I want to keep the car in tip top shape so it will be a reliable commuter and was wondering about timing belts. I know timing belts are usually replaced around 100,000 miles, but also heard age was a factor (coming from Acura dealer, quoted price of around $800 I believe). Should I go ahead and change it now, or do I chance waiting a little longer, and change it at 100,000 miles?

Also, has anyone here installed remote starters in their TLs? What would be the best one to go for if I were to do that. I also plan on tinting the windows and upgrading the intake, but that's about it.

Sorry for the essay, old habits die hard. Thanks in advance for answering my basic questions. I am really excited about my new-to-me car and joining a community of fellow owners!

I agree on waiting for the car to hit 105k before doing the timing belt.

you can wait until the car tells you. assuming you drive ~15k mi a year...you'll be at the 105k mark in about 2 1/2 yrs or so. your 08 is barely 6 yrs old. it'll be fine.

mine is almost 9 and i have less mileage than you do. i'll be waiting until the 10 yr mark to do the TB.

Welcome! There's no reason to change it now. It will tell you when it needs to be changed. Have fun!

I'd wait, you're still at less than 105k and less than 10 years

Welcome Mac....if your Mom took good car of it, you can wait until 105,000 miles.

Congrats on the purchase! I'd agree with everyone to wait up on the timing belt. I'm just under 70k miles and mines an 07, so I'm pretty close to you on that one. Also a recent college grad with new gig so congrats on that as well haha.

As for remote starters, I'm definitely looking for one and got some good advice. Not sure about Massachusetts but I found a good quality installation place to do my stater (ABT in Chicago) and I plan on buying the Viper 5904V for my TL (see link below). Haven't done it yet (waiting for the fall) so take my advice with a grain of salt. Good luck and enjoy your new ride!
