Insurance Rates? Need help ASAP.
I'm looking at a potential deal for an 06 TL, ready for purchase tonight if insurance rates are right.
I need to know the insurance rates you guys are paying. If you could include details such as coverage, deducible, company and most importantly age that would be great.
I'm 17 by the way, those of you who are HS seniors or college students please chime in. Thanks!

I'm paying $126 a month to State Farm for my 04 TL, full coverage, forget what my deductible is, possibly $1000. Perfect driving record and I am 25 and been driving for 9 years.
When I was 16 it was $230 a month for my Neon for minimum coverage, just liability, didn't even cover theft. That dropped down to about $195 after a few years due to my perfect record, but it wasn't until I turned 25 that it went down a lot (though I STILL think it's too high considering I have a perfect driving record and I've never had any insurance claims).

Thanks for the answers guys, please keep them coming, I want to have a definitive answer by tonight so I won't hold up the seller. As great of a deal the car is, there's no point in me getting it if it's a risk driving around every day.

I live in southwestern ontario, I believe our rates are higher than most of the US but not all. I would recommend against a TL for a 17 year old anyways, when I parked in my high school's parking lot my car got dented, get something a little older so if it gets scratched you won't care too much.

Call your broker. Only they can really tell you. Ins rates depend not only on age, but specific type of car (MT v AT v TL-S), location by zip code, miles driven, how often driven (daily or pleasure), etc, etc.
FWIW - to add my daughter to our '02 TL-S (~18 months ago) it was an add'l $131 per month. We have multi-car/home disc and full coverage.
BTW - why not add to your parents policy? Would be a little cheaper, no?

By the way, Bearcat, how is your daughter registered on your policy? I'm hoping that registering the TL under my dad's name would make it a little better for me, but I really have no idea how this insurance stuff works until I call the agent.
Thanks for everyone's input

I was going to make a call but the agent is off for the weekend so I turned to azine for some advice.

Also shop around there are a lot of options. State Farm, Nationwide and All State may need you to see an agent to get an estimate though.
The varying rates on Auto Insurance is unbelievable.

Then, we just called and added my daughter as a driver to the '02 (just to that one car). I think we had to give a little info: Name, age, DL #, etc. but that was it.
The change in premium worked out to ~$130 per month. After one year accident/ticket/claim free the rate dropped by quite a lot (1/2 maybe more - don't remember for sure).
As an under 24 year-old male, I don't think you're rate will drop as much or as fast, no matter how well you drive.
Just see if you 'rents can have the car added to their existing policy with you as the primary driver. At least check and see if it's possible and what the costs will be.
edit - yeah what he said; added to the parents policy *assuming* they have good records/rates.

Not sure if what you're suggesting is allowable Bearcat. If there are as many drivers as vehicles each driver must be the primary driver on one vehicle. I don't fully understand the intricacies of it, but when I was 16 we had 2 cars and 2 drivers in the household, and State Farm refused to just add me as a secondary driver, instead I had to be listed as the primary driver on one car and secondary driver on the other car, and the other driver in the household had to be the primary driver on the other car and secondary driver on the first car. At least that's how State Farm did it, but I doubt other companies will be different, they're pretty much all the same.

Might vary by state, as Ins is regualted at the state level. That's why the OP needs to talk to the agent/broker.
Then again, we've got 2 cars and 3 drivers (on this policy). I don't know who is primary on the '02. Wife is primary on the '07. Kid is *only* on the '02.

Glad I found this thread because I had the same question, 17, female. Been wanting the TL for a while now and read so much, hopefully I could purchase it in the summer been wanting it for so long, ever since the 03TLS and now the third gen is perfect. Wont even mention the forth haha. Well couldnt pm but jsut wondering how much you managed to get insurance for, guessing that you got the TL
It all depends on your driving experience, plus insurance companies always prey on teenage guys; its probably where they make their money. Since I lagged my drivers permit and have only been licensed 6 months, you can imagine why my rates are through the roof.

Haha, I wish I got that TL, but I'm being quoted at north of $1750, and since both car money and insurance money come from the same pot, I had to pass.

Fact of the matter is young males (say, 16 - 24) are more likely than any other category to knowingly violate traffic laws and more likely to be in a serious accident. Those are well studied, statistical facts, not opinion.
IOW - your rates are higher because others similar to you cost the insurance company more in claims.

They don't "prey" on teenage males any more than they "prey" on anyone else.

I think in TX they take another 10 - 15% off for driver safety. I have but haven't submitted the certificate yet.

Rates are going to vary state-to-state and area-to-area within states. However, if you are not a member of AARP you might want to think about joining and then get insurance coverage through them. Because they only insure a more "mature" clientele (50+) they generally come up with some of the lowest rates around. A membership is only $12 a year but you have the potential to save $100's on a policy with them. FWIW.

Mine was only around 430 for 6 months. It did go up to ~550 at renewal due to an $1800 claim on my previous car, but a late model TL can certainly be insured for under 800/year if everything is in your favor.

Put your dad OR mom (not both) as the primary driver, and then yourself as a secondary driver. You should have about 120 a month if you and your parents have good records (no tickets, etc) and you send in your report card to the insurance company to get a discount. Full coverage, 250/500K, 500 deductible.

Insurance companies look at your school report card to set rates? Does it matter if you go to an Ivy League school or some shitty community college? You may be an average student at Ivy but your grades can equal that of a rocket scientist in a community college.

its the good student discount. Statistics supposedly suggest (according to insurance agents) that good students are better driver's and are less prone to street-race, etc.
