what else would you buy instead? I have a 2005 TL 6speed with 60,000 miles at the moment and wonder if an insurance company totals me out. What would I get as a replacement. At the moment I'd buy a TL type S 6speed, 2009+ g37 4 door 6speed, possibly a newer accord sport 6speed. Even though the only 4 door 6speed comes as a 4 cylinder. I'm just curious to know what others will buy as a replacement vehicle and why.

Type S 07/08.
They went downhill from there. I think Infiniti cars are not that nice looking no matter the year.

I'll jump off that bridge if and when I get there.

I'm not sure i would buy another 3G TL, they are almost 10 years old! I know they can last but maintenance/rust will be hassle.
And it's true what Panda said, Acura has not made any nice cars since, so Acura is sadly done for me.

If money is not an issue, i would go for Q60 3.0t or a BMW 4 Series

Similar situation as me. My 05 6MT has about 73K mi on it. All the good TLs are just getting too old. BRZ or FRS with MT would be the first thing I'd go test drive. If no fit in it or no likey then who knows. Probably some reliable, cheap, used,(pick any 2) POS off a lot somewhere until such time any affordable car looks interesting in any way. Seeing as how the 3GTL was the last car I lusted after in any way it could be a while. Since most new cars are putting infotainment over function I find little joy in them. Anything >$30K is out. I hate CVTs too so that's going to be an issue too since they are popping up in everything and MTs are becoming unicorns.

My '05 6-speed has 165k miles on it now...what's next? Well....yeah....this haunts me on a daily basis since I have been up in the air about getting a new car for the past couple of years anyways. With a family now...my needs/wants have shifted around and finding a vehicle that is no longer than the TL, manual transmission, 7'ish sec 0-60, can safely/comfortably fit a child seat, priced sub-$40k, and is reasonable to drive in the winter.....the choices aren't really plentiful.

Being reasonable, I am down to looking at a Mazda3 or even giving up on my manual and going to a Subaru Outback or Forester. I really wish Subaru still had the Legacy Wagons....I much prefer a nice wagon over a SUV. I just keep waiting it out to see what is coming next year. Buick is supposed to be bringing over a wagon variant of the Regal next year.

Acura nor Honda has anything that meets my needs nor that I really want. The Acura lineup is just not appealing at all to me these days. I like the Accord, but it is technically longer than my TL...our garage is quite tight as it is and don't want to go bigger.

I agree.

When my '04 was needing lots of costly repairs and I was looking for cars, Acura was one brand I didn't even bother looking at. IMO, the 3G TL was the last good looking Acura car. They seem to gear towards technology but not looks or performance.

I didn't know exactly what I was going to get to replace the TL but everything I test drove felt better in every way. And eventually ended up with what I have now.. and I love it. While I still had the TL and my new car, my TL felt like driving a boat lol.

I also disagree about the Infiniti cars. My wife has a G37 which IMO looks good and has plenty of power. I test drove the Q50S and I love the looks of it, but wasn't as fun to drive and kinda felt like the wife's G37.

My choice

'08 or newer if possible. I like the NEW infinity coupe, but not spending that kind of $$$$$. '08 TL or newer if I had any luck.

Probably not just b/c it's not easy finding a good condition low mileage 3G 6MT. I wouldn't buy one otherwise.

Honestly no clue what I would get instead. I was in the market for cars a few months ago and felt like I was at a stalemate. Everything looks so generic now days

i absolutely love my 3G TL but if this one goes i wouldn't buy another, just too old now. the technology you can get in cars now is light years from 10 years ago.

i currently have a deposit in for a tesla model 3 but depending on how it turns out or if i can afford it at that time it's available, i'll make the decision to get my deposit back or not.

i would also heavily look at the newer honda accord if i had to get a newer car

^^^^ Yeah, same here. Love it, but 3G is too old to get another. I haven't had car payments for almost 11 years now. I get the "new car itch" about every 6 months, but then I'm not too eager to fork over ~$40K cash for a new car or $$$/month for a lease just yet. Probably will wait another 2-3 years barring a catastrophic early end, but definitely won't be a 3G or 4G TL.

I'd probably get a WRX or an STI if I could afford the upgrade. Not too many row your own japanese cars now, especially in a 4 door.

If I had to replace my 08 Tl Type S I'd replace it with a 15+ Sti, or used E80 M3, but having no car payments currently is amazing!

I just got into my 3G TL and love it, but my eye is already being drawn towards a 2008-2010 (XE20) Lexus IS350 ... because 3.5L V6 making 306 hp and (most importantly) put down via RWD. Only problem is I'm not sure how many 6MTs are available on the used mkt. Still, might be worth checking out.

Growing older and also changing jobs that requires a LOT more miles I am looking at getting a more economical. But at the same time I am seperating the need for speed by purchasing a seperate rwd beater for track use. So the economical car can fully be a daily vs my TL right now which has to slightly scratch that sporty itch when needed.

I really think the next daily I buy will be a hyundai sonata hybrid. 35-40mpg which I NEED. Plus still has 200hp and four doors and 90% of the comforts of the TL. Plus some newer tech too

I hope you know the is350 ONLY came with A/T right? Have fun replace suspension part on a high mileage toyota/lexus. You will be in for a surprise.

Well, that would explain why I don't see any manual IS350s on the market! Thanks for the warning regarding suspension issues, too.

Hasn't happened to me but I still went through 5 TL's before finding my unicorn.

1st - 2005 TL 175k anthracite gray interior
2nd- 2006 TL 97k Anthracite black interior
3rd - 2006 TL 87k anthracite black interior
4th - 2005 TL 106k Black gray interior (miss this one for some reason)
5th - 2005 TL 135k 6MT black beige interior
6th- (UNICORN) 2004 6MT FACTORY ASPEC BLACK, black interior 60k

but if I had the choice I'd probably get an IS250/350 6MT

I'm older than you.....but feel the same way. I bought my TL since my wife told me it was time for me to have a big boy car. Now I tell her what's next? A $50k BMW? She is not amused.

I have a 2004 TL and if mine got totaled out I'd probably buy a high mileage 08 TL or the 4th gen TL. That's depending on how much they give me though. I'm going back to school in the fall so I might have to settle for a 2007 Accord since price would be an issue.

Nope. I like this car, my favorite DD to date, but if totaled I wouldn't get another. If it happened today, I'd get an 11-13 is350 to DD tomorrow.

It's interesting to hear people respond to this question.

whenever I buy a car the first thing that pops in my mind is "what if." . I feel if a person will buy the same car over again after an accident then it was the right choice. I'm a big fan for a 4 door sport sedan with a manual transmission, economical, reliable, cheap to maintain, comfortable, and fun to drive. It seems impossible to find that in any other car because no matter what I will be sacrificing something. Another thing about my TL is that it's cheaper on insurance than civics, accords, and many other cars. After researching non stop I've come to the conclusion that I would buy the same car or the Type S 6mt no matter what. Then if I want a different car I'll just keep my TL as my extremely high mileage daily and buy another car.

If my 07 TL-S 6-speed got totaled. I would really look into getting a 16+ Honda Accord Coupe 6-speed. They seem have fallen in price recently. New they were about 33,000 and have fallen to just over $24,000. Either this or a new Civic Si.

I would only consider another 3G Type-S if it were a low-mileage M/T one. Otherwise, I'd be doing some serious car shopping but surprisingly enough, I'm still unsure of what I would purchase as a replacement. Acura has nothing interesting right now, so I'd probably go German (BMW, Audi or VW) or maybe get an Accord Sport to stay in the Honda family.

Here's my take on this subject.

The unfortunate part is, the 3rd gen TL has aged. To find a super clean, well taken care of 3rd gen TL as a replacement, is very hard. I've owned my TL for 10 years now and put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into my car. I would hope to keep my TL for ever to where it's my "classic" . If my TL for whatever reason is at a loss, I would not go back to another one. I am also a genuine car guy so I like performance. Would I buy another Acura? most likely not. It has to be super similar to my TL. So yes brembos are a must, luxury features are a must, sound is a must, exhaust tone is a must, boosted is a must ect. Now, most automakers are making what's on my list but the down side is the cost. It's no secret my wife and I are looking into Mercedes and specifically C43 or GLE43. The cost is a bit overkill for what they are, so I'll wait til they come off lease. My wife had gone from a 2010 Ford Mustand V6 base model without power seats so as basic as you can get. She now has a fully loaded 2011 Optima with things like pano roof, heated and cooled seats, navigation, heated steering wheel ect ect, It's a huge improvement over what she had. My point being, you get use to features that you have that you're not willing to give up. I wouldn't want to give up cooled seats or the pano roof but that's just me. As vehicles are getting more and more advanced, these features are ALMOST standard equipment. Regardless, anything new would be a decent upgrade from a 3rd gen TL. There is no doubt, this has been the best vehicle I've owned. It's more than a vehicle to me. I owned it for 10 years so there's a ton of emotional attachment to my TL. Like NFN said, not having car payments is a blessing. The biggest turn off the is cost of new vehicles. They are indeed more expensive than when these vehicles were brand new.

I've owned mine since new so going on 12 years. I hope it doesn't happen but if it ever did get totaled, I would not buy another one. Too many other compelling options out there in my opinion. Ideally, I would like to pick up a new DD in the next year or two and keep my TL as a second car since I just can't seem to part ways with it.

When I totalled my first Type-S, I considered other cars, but just ended up getting another Type-S (my current one). It is indeed 10 years old, and gas mileage could be a bit better, but aside from little things that I fixed right after I purchased it (fuel cap sensor for instance), I've had 34,000 trouble-free miles over 2.5 years. I would like to keep it until it can't go anymore, but whatever happens, I would definitely get another car after this one goes. It's time for a change. I still haven't decided what it will be, but I just know it will be electric.

I could see replacing my Accord with a later model 3rd gen TL or if I could find one, an '06/07 Accord V6 6 speed sedan. I know the cars, they last forever, got more than enough room for all my detailing stuff. I've got my G35 but being RWD with IRS, the trunk floor is 3" or so higher so there is less space. Plus I don't want to start piling miles on it.
