How did you sand the edges? I want to know because if I get another 3G I will probably need to do this at some point and will use your successful outcome as my basis!

I'm actually very surprised at how well that turned out. Sanding the edges made a huge difference. Can you post a picture from the back seats? From afar, I bet most people wouldn't even know it's not the original dash.

I just took about 30 passes on each edge of the airbag cover with 60 grit sand paper. It would not sit right otherwise. This was so it could lie flat in the airbag. I don't have before of after pics, sorry.

I also taped up on either side of the seams by the outside vents and applied black silcone adhesive sealant so the transition would be less noticeable.

Those shots look excellent. I wonder if it would be worth making Coverlay aware of your concerns about extending the cover just a little more around the glove box? I'm sure they are aware of this already and it was intentional for shipping purposes. Having that cover extend lower, would throw off the rectangular symmetry of how it can be shipped. I don't know, just my thoughts...

No doubt! I'd do the same.

Fortunately, my dash hasn't cracked... yet. I'm just trying to plan ahead as I know it is inevitable. I'm very interested in your progress with this, so it might be worth bringing this up to the company. Maybe they didn't think it was a huge deal?

I think it looks Great for what it is! For sure! You definitely made it look better than others I’ve seen! And it doesn’t look too bad at all! I guess we can’t ask for too much more, but agree with the covering of the lower dash on passanger side.

Awesome job Gatr, thanks for the push!

Btw, where did you order your coverlay through?

I ordered mine through Rock Auto. $190 shipped.

I perhaps will approach Coverlay mfg. and see if they would be interested in doing a mod to the current Coverlay.

I think contacting Coverlay is a great idea. I mean, the worst they can say is "no."

In all reality, the individuals who are purchasing this product are likely enthusiasts, who probably aren't afraid to shell out a few extra dollars for a better fitment. Sometimes, it's threads like this that move the needle.

Looks good. What color is the one you installed? black or dark gray? SKU number would be helpful.

For future reference, when the rest of us get the dash crack.

would you mind if I forwarded this thread to their attention? With your pictures, they might be excited to see their product circulating through this enthusiast community. Additionally, your fitment modifications and note about extending the glove box trim may help improve their product, should they chose to adjust their mold. The product already looks great, but f perfected, this could be a life-saver for those who have cracked dashboards.

ur worried about the dash? look at that fuckin all weather mat!
seriously though...I fought Acura and what I consider "won"...crazy.
Even the replacement started showing the outline before I sold it.
Coverlay is the way to go and now you don't have to think about it again.
Good work, man!

FWIW the only way to prolong this happening is keeping the heat/cool
cycles from happening...in FL you need to add the window visors and
leave the windows cracked every single day in addition to the covercraft
sunshade. The 303 didn't do shit, IMO...although maybe it kept it more
lubed and less likely to split. In a way if that's true you should be rubbing
cocoa butter on that bitch like a lady's thighs.

Folks, just be sure if you go the Coverlay route, that you either vent your windows or use a sunshade. I did not use one for about 20 minutes (parked in direct sun), and when I came back to the car, the Coverlay was warped and was detaching near the front center windshield and center speaker. I'm gluing it back now, so hopefully this works. If it doesn't I'm getting another car.

that's retarded...the only reason to go with a dash cover is to not have to worry about sunshades and bullshit that put you in this position in the first place.
I'd get a refund from them and put the suede one on there. It's not hideous. Once you get used to it.

Yeah, I'm not happy right now. We'll see how this holds up. Tonight I have to glue the part by the window. I have no idea how I'm going to get glue under the lip by the auto light sensor by the windshield.

The warping does absolutely stink, but to remedy this situation, I wonder if Automotive GOOP would be a better alternative?
Amazon Amazon

I used this to glue my shark mouth grill in place after this was recommended to me by customcargrills.com . I talked to the owner in-person and he praised this product for about 10 minutes, stating that in about 19 years of experience, this is the best thing he's ever used for both interior and exterior applications. He had like half of 100 gallon drum filled with empty tubes. This stuff is rock solid. It might be worth a shot ?

I will take a look at the MSDS to find out the expansion rate and temperature range of it.

Sorry to hear about your cover warping. I did stumble on someone selling a mint condition Type-S dashboard for a great price. IF you have Facebook, send this guy a message.

Is the coverlay a hard plastic or a soft plastic? Like, is it closer to the squishy dash or the rock hard trim pieces?

The latest Jeep Grand Cherokee with leather wrapped dashboard are having issues as well as the leather is starting to delaminate. Most 2011-13 owners have suffered this and only time will reach the rest. Another classic case of manufacturing defect at owners cost.

I don't know if I can stomach spending 80K + for a vehicle like that and knowing the dashboard will need replacing down the road. On a side note, I'm almost sure you can take off the leather skin cover and glue it back again. I can deal with the skin coming undone vs cracks which can't be fixed. At least this could be fixed without replacing the dash.

Just an FYI-2004 dash differs from 2005-2008
2004 0670-SEP-A80
2005/2008 06780-SEP-A91

Just remember that the Coverlay is attached to a "moveable" surface-broken dash panel.

My '04 hasn't cracked, yet, but if it did, I would have installed a new cover, but with the low resale value I'd need to rethink that decision.

When the passenger airbag deploys, it rips through the dash.

I advise against putting any kind of vanity cover over the dash that will interfere with airbag operation.
