I recently purchased new 18 inch rims for my 06 TL and since then every time I go over 55mph my wheel starts to shake and it becomes hard to control my car. what's causing this?

Sounds like an unbalanced rim. Do they have any little weights stuck to the inside of the rims? Take them to a tire shop and they will put the rims on a machine and add weights until they have them balanced.

Be carefull - to much weights on the rim would not make shaking disappear. It would remain at high speed. It is better to move the tire on the rim to the point the weights are not necessary or only few are required - it cost more but is better.

Center/hub bore same size as OEM? If not, get adapters and have the assemblies balanced by a Hunter Road Force machine:

Good advice here: Assuming, " Center/hub bore same size as OEM? ", than, aligning the low spot, on the rim, with the high spot, on the tire, and proper balance, using a quality machine, such as the " Hunter Road Force ", operated by a conscientious Tech. should solve your problem.
