How often do you change your oil?

I believe the mid indicates oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles. IMO its too soon for an oil change and studies have indicated that you can go as long a 10,000 inbetween oil changes.

you are believing wrong.

the MID takes in account for RPM's, engine start ups and other factors that can be found in your owners manual.

My MID takes me all the way to 6k mile intervals.

thought it was more like 5k for MID, but it depends on your driving habits.

BMW at one point recommended 15k OCIs, but that's with a special Castrol Synthetic "Euro formula" (at the time not readily available off shelf).

Justin, are you serious? I thought the MID was mileage based, no lie.

Im very serious.

if you spend all day in vtec, your oil life will decrease faster.
City driving is a lot harder on the vehicle than freeway miles and will decrease the oil life faster.

The system monitors engine operating conditions such as fluid temperatures and engine speed to determine the proper service intervals. The Multi-Info Display (MID) located below the fuel and engine temperature gauges in the instrument cluster indicates the remaining percentage of engine oil life, and then shows service is due with a "wrench" icon. A percentage-based countdown to the next service is displayed when the car is within 15 percent of the end of the service interval. A letter and number code is displayed to indicate the specific type of service that is required. If the service is missed, the MID indicates past-due mileage to express the urgency of the required service to the driver.
The system is designed to eliminate unnecessary maintenance procedures, environmental impact and expenses, while ensuring that important service issues are addressed. In some cases, oil change intervals can extend to a maximum of 10,000 miles, which could spare the owner considerable money and inconvenience over the life of the car. The owner-resettable system monitors all normal service parts and systems, including oil, oil filter, tire rotation, air-cleaner, automatic transmission fluid, spark plugs, timing belt, coolant, brake pads and more.

I go off my MID, usually average about 3.5-4.5k miles per change. I did every 3k on my dsm (turbo eclipse) but then again turbo motors are a completely different monster . Dont believe everything you read from the internet! SHE's THE DEVIL!

PS- You 3g guys with over 100k, are you still using 5W20 oil?

I follow the MID. I'll usually get about 7000 miles til it reads 15%. In 56K miles I have averaged 7500 miles per oil change.

And I'm at 128K and rising fast. I fill in 4.5 qts of 5W20 and drain out more than 4 qts per change. I measure it every time.

damn.

i drove 2,000 miles and it went from 50% to <15% now.

what does this indicate about my engine life/performance/maintenance issues?

I don't drive hard at all.

It's more a function of your driving conditions.

I drove 2000 miles in the last 2 weeks and it was all highway. In my last oil change I have about 3600 miles, MID is at 60% and my trip computer is averaging 30 MPG and 49 MPH.

All of the trips I took I was going between 65 - 80 mph on the highway for hours at a time.

I do a lot of driving. The 56K miles is since last May. I also really monitor my oil life and usage. My last car was an I35 and it was consuming oil at about 1 qt per 400 miles.

Thank you for being good.
you cant get an average from 1 sample.

Please drive more to get more of a sample range.

presumably it also took you 2k to get to 50% in the first place. Again, showing it's more like 5k mile OCIs if you base it off the MID. This is normal.

I love when Justin plays nicely.
I did NOT realize it is a real calculation, thought it was fixed. Either way, I do the usual 5K or so and swap it out...I like fresh fluids...

I get closer to 8-10k each oil change. I use Castrol synthetic 5/20 and the mid always let me know when. I do 90% highway though.

Well the oil he is using is the same grade just high mileage. The oil im using is just standard synthetic oil at the same grade. I didnt think it mattered. Just making sure im using the correct weight at my mileage.

i get about 4k mi per OCI on my TL based on the MID indicator over the ownership (thus far) of my TL. used 5w20 dino up to 56k mi and switched to mobil 1 5w20. my OCI will now most likely be on an annual basis since i'm not driving my TL as much.

now my MDX so far, has gotten around 5300 mi at the >15% indicator (i'm at my 2nd interval since owning it). similar if not the exact same commuter routes, but i have had a few more roadtrips in the MDX.

so your MID is taking into account all that stuff that justn quoted from honda above.

i will continue to follow the MID as directed by my owner's manual or one year. terp...you drive a lot of "city" miles, hence your intervals will be shorter than someone who drives mostly hwy. bottomline, your interval is normal for YOUR car.

well I change it every 5K miles...keep a strict OCI....

as Justn said, the MID does not know how to calculate the oil life %, it basically throws a % at you depending on how/where you drive....

just buy a quality oil and stick to 3K or 5K (whatever you prefer) and call it a day....

I go about 5K miles before I get to the < 15% oil life left message. My driving is probably 80% city 20% hwy. I've had the car 2 years and have only put about 15K miles on it.

^Why so many miles dregsfan?!? lol

I change mine about every 6 months or 5K miles. Only put 20k miles in 4.5 years of ownership. I use Mobile 1 EP 5w-20 oil with mobile 1 or Bosch distance plus oil filters.

I do mine every 5k with mobile1 5w20. Recently I switched to mobile 1 Extended performance with a mobile 1 filter that's supposedly good for 15k miles. Coincidentally my MID indicated 10% with regular mobile 1 fluid at 5k, and 10% with extended performance at 7k miles.

I go by miles but the MID is usually pretty close as far as % to mileage. With mobile 1 I do 5k, but since switching to EP, I'm planning on 7k or when th MID says 5%. Whichever comes first.
