Honda dealer doing service on an Acura?

Hey all, I havent posted in a while, college has been pretty hectic.

My question is, down the street from my campus (University of Maryland) there is a Honda dealership, College Park Honda. Is it a good idea to drop my TL there for service? Will they even agree to service it? Im only asking since I'm not 21 yet, so Acura dealerships will deny me a loaner and this dealership is accessible via my University's shuttle system.

Thanks in advance guys.

Bringing your car to Honda is OK. I mean if you can get a loaner, but you have to be on your insurance as coverage (not 100% though). If not, just use your shuttle system.

are you talking oil change and ck everything- any dealer or any private shop can do it for you

for the 105k water pump timing belt- Some honda dealers will- have to ask the service MANAGER about it

It is perfectly fine to go to a Honda dealer for servicing your car. I do with my TL all the time. I can't find a good independent shop I trust and the closest Acura dealer to me is well over an hour away. If you are having a recall repair performed, though, go to an Acura dealer.

Thumbs up

I'm glad you asked this, because I'm essentially in the same boat. Granted, I'm 23 and the dealership is a lot farther away, but the nearest Acura dealership is two hours away down in Salt Lake.

I was curious to ask this question too because when I went there yesterday to get some wheel locks taken off, I noticed that they were servicing a Lexus in their service bay. This is a Honda-Toyota combo dealership, so it wasn't a complete surprise.

Too bad I can't stand the service manager, though...this is gonna be tricky.

more than likely and that usually includes quotes on parts, but nothing's cheaper than doing it yourself.. Check the 3G garage..

^ I call the local Honda dealerships then call my Acura dealership to get a price match, depending on the guy.. sometimes they go lower and give me the wholesale cost.. If I mention the internet they blab some bs about shipping & storage costs and how they can't go lower than 10x retail..

Well the Acura next to my house jacks up its prices quite a bit so I get the number from them and if I need it immediately I go to honda but if not I buy it off the internet.

To save even more money, buy your parts too. Tell the Honda dealership to do what work you want.

Thanks guys, btw, are the service codes for Hondas the same as Acuras? If i tell them i need for example an A1 service on my car, is that the same for both Hondas and Acuras?

It probably wouldn't be the same, but it might depend on the dealer. The Honda dealer I use goes by mileage instead of "A1," or "B1," "B2," etc. When I had a B1 service minder, I looked up in my manual what a B1 service called for and I looked at what the Honda dealer had as suggested maintenance for my car based on mileage. There were differences, I just can't remember off the top of my head what they were.

Just look in your manual to see what your service minder calls for and tell them that's what you want done. If you don't have a manual, it is available in the 3G garage.

I buy all of my Acura parts from acuraoemparts.com (Delray Acura) and my local Honda dealership does all of my service. It helps that a friend of mine is a service tech there

It's way cheaper than servicing it at Acura.

As long as your car is not under warranty, Honda will service it.

The codes like A1 B12 are the same for honda and acura, because the new hondas use the same codes as well.
honda is cheaper. ie I'm getting the brake fulid flushed and it's $80 at Honda, and $140 at Acura.

also, warranty has nothing to do with Honda servicing your car.

For any repair or service that I can't do myself, I usually buy the parts online and bring it to my Honda dealer. They are the same certified techs and usually cheaper. I brought my 1st Gen 3.2TL for the Timing Belt service there and saved $300 vs. the Acura dealer. I also buy my transmission fluid and diff fluid for my wife's Pilot at the Honda dealer. Make sure to call around as all the dealers have different prices.

Honda dealers will usually be cheaper due to lower hourly labor rates.

Here's what a NJ Honda dealer would do at 105,000 miles for the 3G Acura TL for "less than $800.00":

Replace Timing Belt
Replace Accessory Belts
Replace Water Pump
Flush Coolant System
Inspect Internal Engine Seals
Adjust Valves

Acura dealers charge much more...keep in mind the 3G TL is based on the Accord platform. Honda dealers cannot perform Acura warranty work....everything else is doable.
