I've heard cops call in and say they've clocked vehicles moving at 127 and 135 for the dispatcher to yell "DO NOT PURSUE!" back through the CB.
I think they stopped using CB's when The Dukes of Hazard show ended.

Funny thing is that it still had more to go in 4th gear. Without the governor, it could possibly get near 160 mph. Anyway, one time thing....never again.

BTW, this is an 04 TL Auto w/ a-spec body kit/ 12K miles

The Owners Manual clearly states that the top speed for 4th gear in the Automatic is 149 MPH -- perhaps you should have upshifted to 5th . . .

I think the first couple of posts scared them off. Nobody wants to disagree with the majority.
Something I call the forum bandwaggoning effect, quite common.

By the way, I wonder what would happen if i tried going 140 with my half-bald el42s...

Slippage loss? If you are refering to the torque converter its a lock up.

i'm an obgyn and have been stopped a few times going to the hospital for deliveries, sometimes those little guys just don't listen to a clock, I haven't gotten a ticket for that, the only problem was that going home at 3am after a delivery, it's pretty hard to say you have a delivery when you aren't going towards the hospital. I will tell you though the rest of the time I drive quite slowly, and I still get there within a minute or two or when i would get there speeding.

These stories are funny.

I have come to the scary realization that all cops are not in the job to protect and some don’t really care about upholding the law.

My buddy bought a new car and was caught speeding early in the morning on a deserted strip of highway. He explained to the cop that he was just trying to see what the car would do and the cop offered to go down the highway a bit and clock him. Needless to say my buddy thought it was some kind of trap and didn’t take him up on his offer.

Keep the stories coming.

The important phrase there is "may get off"...

The much better idea is to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency and let the trained EMS crew do it, legally, and with a medic in the back to boot!

And, please, if you see an Emergency Vehicle approaching with lights and sirens: Pull safely to the side of the road to let them pass. They may be going to one of YOUR loved ones or friends houses!

My grandfather was having a heart attack a while back so my grandmother got him in the car and they drove off, he may not have made it if they waited for the EMTs. He is still alive and well. I think my mother told me she sped and ran red lights to get there.

Learn something new everyday...

Well, your million years are over. It happened to me in another car. I passed a cop at 130mph, heading to the hospitol. I did eventually stop, and when I did the cop and a sherrif was behind me. They saw I had an emergency and let me go. The cop (not the sherrif) was pissed. When I pulled over, it took the cop about 40 seconds to get to me.

Completely untrue, one of my clients was a surgeon at scripps memorial in San Diego. He is on-call in the early mornings, and he was caught going 135 in his porsche, the cop pulled him over, and he explained that he was going to the hopspital, the cop said ok follow me, and followed him all the way into the hospital and to the patient, just to make sure he was legit. Cops arent all assholes, sometiems its called common sense and alot of them have it.
In the first instance, it demonstrates that an officer can use discretion but also that the odds are 50/50, if the sheriff hadn't been there you probably would have gotten a cite.

In the second, the cop did follow the doctor to confirm the situation, so it was conditional.

No, not all cops are assholes. I don't consider a cop doing their job and enforcing the law to be an asshole for doing so. And as another poster said, a cop is just as likely to escort you to the hospital and then, once the situation was under control, write out a cite for the offense.

Most aren't stupid either. I'd guess the reason the cop who let the poster going 165 off was because he looked at the car, sized up the situation, and probably figured he'd have a hard time convincing a judge (or his CO) he clocked him going that fast.

There are some good stories in this thread.

1993:

I hit 137 in my 1990 CRX once. ONCE. Barrelling down I95 at about 2am. Made it from Springfield to Kings Dominion in about 45 minutes and eventually Richmond in an hour. Just as I pulled onto 295 around Richmond my radar detector goes nutz.

NOTE: CRX speedometer only goes up to 125, my needle was bouncing and the RPM's were still climbing.

At that speed you just have to look in the rear view for the 5.0. Saw his lights come on in the median and I just let off the gas pedal. My buddy that was with me was like "What are you doing?!?" I said "I'm busted, whatever" I pulled over, had a cigarette and he finally caught up to me. The conversation went something like this....

State Trooper: Do you have any idea how fast you were going?? (obviously pissed)

Me: Uh, not really. I'm trying to get back to Camp Lejeune, my buddy and I are on air alert and we have to be back at 0500.

ST: I clocked you at 137 when you were slowing down after you passed me and your brake lights came on.

Me: Wow.

ST: I'm going to cut you a break this time.

Me: (thinking) phew, he's going to cut it down to like 85/55 and he won't take me to jail (/thinking)

ST: Actually, I'm going to cut you a big break. I'm going to let you go but try to keep it slower. That speed is just reckless.

My buddy: (snorts and spits up his coffee in his cup and all over my dashboard)

Me: Thank you sir.
(thinking) wonder if I can get a police escort all the way back to Lejeune? (/thinking)

ST: Be safe out there and don't let this happen again.

Me: Not a problem sir.

-------------------------------------------------
1994:

Same CRX, I85/I40 around Raleigh, NC or so:

Picture if you will..... Two lanes going East, six cars in tight formation in front of me. All going about 52 or so. Me, moving up quickly on them, about 85 or so. Slowed down, braking... Decided to take the breakdown lane on the right and pass them. Drop to 3rd, gun it and fly past them. Two lead cars flashed high beams at me, whatever. I'm laughing. Not for long though. Car pulls out of the pack, no lights on top, too dark to tell what it is. Until he got up on my bumper and he flips down his sunvisor. Red and blue, flashing deep in the night. I got my alibi straight and pulled over to the right (BB). That one went something like this:

Highway Patrol: Do you have any idea what you just did back there? (obviously pissed)

Me: No sir. What?

HP: You just used the shoulder to pass. (still very pissed)

Me: (playing stupid) really? That was a shoulder? I thought that was a lane...(/stupid)

HP: What do you think would have happened if there was a family broken down on the side of the road back there?

Me: uh, probably would have killed them. I'm really sorry. I'm trying to get back to Camp Lejeune before my morning formation. (yeah, this one worked alot when I was active duty)

HP: Camp Lejeune, hmm. What would your Platoon Sergeant or Platoon Commander say if he knew you were driving like this?

Me: Probably make me into the first Marine Eunuch sir.

HP: Get out of here and don't drive crazy.

Me: Roger that sir.

-------------------------------------------------
1996: Fell asleep behind the wheel of the CRX. I had to crash that Honda. Purchased a 1992 Acura Integra.

2000: Street racing in the back roads of Woodbridge against a Prelude, rolled and flipped multiple times. 4 point harness and cage only thing that saved my life. Purchased a 1993 Honda Accord. Still have the Accord.

I don't speed anymore and I've since learned my lesson. I did get some tickets in my CRX and in my Integra. Paying for over 3k in tickets and license restoration isn't a fun process.

MORAL: Don't do crazy crap unless you are ready to kill someone else or yourself. After seeing the damage to both cars, one from sleep driving and the other from speed, I refuse to do crazy crap anymore. Just not worth it and I love my TL too much.

Most locking torque converters (which most of them are locking) only lock up at cruising, not while under a load. in some cars you can feel this if while crusing at say.... 60mph, and then you give it a LITTLE gas, the rpms will sorta jump up 250-500rpms or so at first and then start accelerating.

My grandfather never got a ticket in later years, whether speeding, DUI, whatever...why? Mason's emblem on his trunk...guess lots of cops around here are masons...would always let him go.

The raw fear at top speed with the stock pinnings is a real reason for mods and then slowing down! LOL
