Hit the Infamous Speed Governor
4am, no one on the road. I was just pressing on the gas pedal 1/2 way for a while on the open highway, and before I knew it, I was doing 120. The road was so open, I thought I might as well open the TL up a bit. Put it in SS mode, went to 4th gear and gunned it. Right at 151 mph, the gas electonically cut off. Funny thing is that it still had more to go in 4th gear. Without the governor, it could possibly get near 160 mph. Anyway, one time thing....never again.
BTW, this is an 04 TL Auto w/ a-spec body kit/ 12K miles

My friend told me the cruise control on my car worked at 150. I've never asked for an details but I assume it was stable. I've only hit 100 once in the 17k miles it has.

Not a prayer...
There is one exception. If you are injured or carrying someone to the hospital critically, or dangerously injured you may get off.

The A-Spec kit helped out here. It reduced aero drag by 0.01Cd which may explain why you felt the car has so much more. At triple digits, every bit of drag reduction and downforce counts. Glad nothing happened to you.

They probably wouldnt let you off the hook with an injured person, but they would definatly be softer.
Not tickited at 165? Was this cop stupid, or were you in navada or something(in ma youd be beaten). All the cops I know are really cool(local newton cops), and I have seen many in lux cars such as BMWs and A CTS-V. They may challenge me to a race!

I don't think so....
Ummm....
Although this area is a little cloudy, I suspect you hit the rev limiter and not a top speed governor.
The owner's manual says not to downshift to 4th at speeds higher than 149 MPH. So that is a rev limiter limit.
The car is capable of going 152-155 according to many reports on this forum. The gearing is different for 5A and 6Ms. There is also some slippage loss on a 5A.
The theoretical top speed of our TLs is about 200 MPH, although the only way it would see that speed is over a cliff.
Our Coefficient of drag (CD) is .29, the same as a C5 Corvette. The TL is very "slippery".
Speed governors usually limit a car/truck's speed to the rating of its tires- for legal liability reasons. However, the tires on our TLs are rated at 165 MPH. Ergo: no need for a governor.
I went 125 by mistake while toying with someone on the Turnpike who thought they had a hot Accord V6. It came very quickly..... and smoothly.
Little brothers can be so annoying.

Um, no. Not a good idea. I'm a moderator on this board. Here's a story a friend of mine has....
Read down to past "Day 5" of 'buddyg's posts. He has a story that is worth reading, but it's long.

Can you elaborate?
That's cool they let you go. In an emergency, they usually will.

A buddy of mine got sent away free and clear on prom night after being caught going 140 in FL. Seems the cops in Orlando had nothing better to do, so a bunch decided to come see him on the side of the road once he was pulled. Tow truck was there, as well. Once the Sgt. showed up, he let my buddy go...a cop let him go on his prom night, he let my buddy go on his...pretty wild...

I have it from a good source....
Cops hear every bogus excuse all day long. Unless you have active, arterial bleeding, they don't care. And even then, they will call the paramedics and write the ticket while waiting.
Same for the "Police Memorial" plates. Means nothing to them. These are most commonly sold by front organizations run by junior wiseguys (Mafia).
Likewise for the stickers you buy over the phone from "police" and "firefighter" organizations. They are most often sold by professional fund raising organizations (OC) who give 20% of the proceeds to the police officers social club or union. There is NO connection to the departments. They are not allowed to raise money that way.
To underscore this, even police patrol cars are not allowed to speed when responding to a call. Of course, we all have seen them do it. But, departmental regulations these days forbid speeding especially for a traffic offense. Some departments will tolerate it if there is imminent danger to life and limb. Police even have to stop for red lights but can then proceed when it is safe with their lights and sirens activated.
If you have driven an emergency/police vehicle with lights and sirens through a metro area, you know how dangerous that can be. People ignore your emergency signals. You have to be very careful of a collision and your job is at risk if you do something against policy.
Just another viewpoint

Now, I love cars, fast cars, drag cars, all cars. I usually drive with the traffic, which is fast here in Atlanta.
I believe it is a basic right of an American to challange laws and authority we do not agree with. That challange comes in many forms, and is specific to the individual.
When a guy flyies by me in a fast car, I say, "wow, he's kicking it", not
"I should call the cops".
To the thread starter: How long did it take you to get to 149 from 120 ?

My brother got cuffed in the state of washington for doing 23 over, but that isn't even close to the speed governor... Apparently it's jail time for going 20+ over in the state of washingtion...

Does anyone read this
I past a cop on my heavily modified R1 doing about 175/180. I was on the 15 freeway about 6 am on a Sunday. Not a car on the road so I open her up. I am up to about 130 and up in the distant I see a dot on the road which is a car. As I get closer I noticed it was highway patrol. Most of them don’t run light bars on their cars.
I just decided to keep the throttle pinned as I passed him because I knew he saw me coming behind at a blistering speed. If I tried to slow down before I got to him I figured he would try to pull me over.
As I pass him I glance down at my speedometer and it said 191. But the speedometers on these bikes at high speeds are off so I am guessing 175/180.
I glance back at my mirror and he never even turned his lights on. I get to my exit which was 5 exits after passing him and exit the freeway. I hit the side street that runs parallel to the freeway and head back the opposite way.
I pull over jump up the wall to look over at the freeway and there he is just cruising at a normal speed and doesn’t even exit the freeway. Just keeps going.
I guess he decided the chance of catching me at the speed was very minimal and just went on about his morning.
Oh and for those people who are going to bitch about me speeding. Go ahead it’s a free country but don’t expect me to care.

i`ve even got a ticket for having a FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) sticker on my car and not being a policeman... the ticket read: False Insignia... i went to court, bringing a picture of the removed sticker and the sticker remains, and was still fined $50 + $59 court fees...

In GA, at least in my area, cops will not pursue cars travelling at high rates of speed. Someone I know has a police scanner, and twice I've heard cops call in and say they've clocked vehicles moving at 127 and 135 for the dispatcher to yell "DO NOT PURSUE!" back through the CB.
It's just not worth it, if you're crazy enough to do that, you have nothing to lose and they figure you're more likely to slow down from seeing them and it scaring you, whereas if they chase you're more likely to continue to speed ahead trying to get away.
