HELP: asphalt tar on my car !

My stupid ass managed to drove on freshly paved road yesterday where asphalt
was still hot and soft. As a result my driver front wheel is still sticky on a side and
I got some tar on the car next to wheel well. I managed to get something off with
soap water (what better thing to do Sunday night at 11:3 pm ? ), but there is
still plenty of sticky residue that I couldn't get rid off.

Does anybody know a good way to clean it up ? Should I use some adhesive
remover ? I found one in my office and it said it was good for tar, but I'm not sure
if it's safe on the paint. The car is black if it makes any difference ...

Help !
Stan.

Go to the store and buy some Bug and Tar Removal liquid. It should come right off.

I also have used that, very effective.
Wash and rewax after treatment since it does remove car wax also.

yeah, i think you can put stuff like... oops/goof off/goo-gone on it, and even mineral spirits... but wait and see what other people say to see if they agree with me.

wow, in the time it took me to reply, two other people replied first (i just edited this to add this statement)

Agree. At a minimum, wash it immediately after cleaning off the the tar, bugs, whatever.

Not sure about Goof Off on the car...the stuff works great, no doubt, but I'd be a little leary about using it on the car...of course, if I read the label on the bug and tar remover, I'd probably say the same thing...hell, my boss used turpintine to get concrete off of his truck...finish wasn't damaged.

wash your car then use the bug and tar remover. what is left should just be some sticky residue and then just use detailing clay to remove that. it will not scratch(or cause swirl marks) in any way. i think there was a thread somewhere(maybe not this board) saying that goo off type products is not good for the car. however there people have used 3M adhesive remover on their cars alot to remove the glue from de-badging the car.

I don't know about your state but in Michigan they reimburse you for a professional to clean the tar off... call your DOT. Other than that, I agree a tar remover from an auto store would work just fine.

A little WD-40 on a rag does wonders. Not near as harsh on the paint as some products and works better than some specific "tar" removers. Darn near anything petroleum based will remove tar. Like any product, wash and wax the area afterwords

Road work is a must but sucks when you have to drive on it....

Paint thinner.

I have always used regular paint thinner to remove anything like tar or sap or other sticky substances from my cars. This was on the advice of a body and paint guy. Will not harm your cars finish. Wash area after using and re-wax. Stay away from products such as "Goof-off" or Grafitti remover or any products that contain acetone or lacquer thinner. These will damage your cars finish.

Paint thinner = Lacquer thinner ?? I guess in my mind the two of these are synonymous. One could be an enamel base and the other lacquer etc.

As Toby mentioned stay away from the "hot" products, IE ones that remove paint. I know I have made my fair share of mistakes with those types of "liquids"...
