Harbor Freight 1.5 Ton jack enough

I'm looking for a jack for the 3G TL.

Is a 1.5 ton enough?
I'm thinking it should be since it's not all the car's weight.

also does anyone know what the difference is in those three 1.5 T on models?

get a 2 ton minimum, 2.5 ton maximum.

I have a racing aluminum 2 ton jack from harbor frieght.

it's lightweight and awesome, I use it all the time. pick up 4 jack stands and a creepy crawler while you're there.

two of them are the same model so the only differences is compact size versus full size.

Don't get the one that only goes 14 or so inches. Will not lift the rear off the ground at the tow hook.

I'm looking to do the front mostly.
Jpipe, oil change etc..
the 1.5 T, is pretty light to carry around. I do understand I might be pushing it since the car as a whole is about 3400lbs

I need to get one myself. That way McCollins and swoosh won't have to bring theirs over all the time.....

1.5T is 3000lbs, more than enough to lift any side of the TL easily

That's at capacity, but for that to occur that would mean the front end is 3k lbs and the rest of the car is 400lbs, which my common sense tells me would not be the case.

I'm guessing realistically lifting the front is prob more like 2500lbs?

Buy a nice jack so you only buy it once. Get a decent low profile aluminum "race" jack for 2-2.5 tons with plenty of lift height. 18 inches is about the norm for one of the aluminum ones. I picked up a Crapsman 2 ton aluminum several years ago. Haven't heard anything bad about the HF ones either, they are a few bucks cheaper than the ones at sears.

I had bought the costco steel floor jack last month, it was like $100. great deal on a great jack, but the weight of it killed me. I returned it. That jack was just infeasible to carry from point A to point B.
That's part of the reason I'm considering one of these which are about 37lbs

I have tw 1.5 ton cheap one. I think it's 69$ or something.

Great and lightweight aluminum but it doesn't lift the rear wheels which is annoying. It won't even lift the front high enough to get jack stands underneath.

Definitely get one that goes as high as possible. 14" isn't anywhere near enough ESPECIALLY For the rear. If you don't you'll have to get creative and find random jacking locations under the car which isn't fun or necessarily safe. Do it properly and get a jack that goes up HIGH. I sometimes have to use a wooden block between the jack and the car (not really safe)

I believe they have an aluminum one that does 17" which might be closer.

I bought this one
http://www.harborfreight.com/25-ton-...ump-68049.html

It's a lot lower than I thought it would be, which is nice, and it lifts to a good height. I haven't tried lifting my TL to maximum height on it, but when I changed my oil it lifted it just fine with plenty of height to put the stands under. It goes from 2-3/4" - 20" Plenty of clearance with stock height. The thing is heavy though. Not something I will really take out of the garage.

That being said, I wouldn't get the 1.5 aluminum one you are looking at. You should get something that lifts somewhere closer to 20''. As far as the weight I think you should be fine. Especially if you just put it up on jack stands once it's up. I think you are smart getting the aluminum one though. lol

I use a 10 year old autozone 1.5T jack to lift the CL-S and it not failed yet. It's actually made out of steel :p

If you plan on lifting the car from the front subframe, you need a jack that will reach. Your common aluminum racing jacks won't reach if your car is lowered too much. My car is pretty low, so I need something that's very low profile and has a long reach. This is the one I have and I love it. Worth every penny:

btw, axle weight is what you're concerned about, since you will never lift the entire vehicle with just the jack. 1.5 will handle one side of the car easily, but of course the greater the rating the larger the safety margin.

I've also been thinking about picking up a new jack since my father's only lifts about 14-15". The HF ones that go to 20" or higher are the ones i'm interested in.
