Gaps on NGK spark plugs 6994
are these plugs gap preset? i just got some ngk iridium plugs 6994 from advanced auto parts. i read somewhere in the sparkplug diy that these plugs gap is already pre-set. but i notice the gaps in the new one is slightly larger than the one i took out.
anyways, reason i ask is my car at idle is stilll somewhat rough, not as smooth as i would expect it to be after the change. maybe the gap needs to be set correctly? |

Pull a plug, buy a spark plug gap tool, check gap, Done.

.044"

If you got the right part, they should be pre-gapped; no need for adjustment.
|
Well, this is interesting (or maybe not):
The service manual spec for spark plug gap is 0.039-0.043" (04 service manual). The NKG6994s come pre-gapped at 0.044", outside of service manual spec.... You should always check the gap to be sure it's not way off, but I don't know if you can adjust the gap on these plugs. I've always heard you can't/shouldn't. If the gap is way off, then take them back. I don't know (doubt it) if an extra 0.001" in gap above spec makes a difference, but the preset gap does not meet service manual specs. Never heard of anyone having problems with the 6994 preset gap. |
Not sure what's up with the Service Manual. The Owners Manual (mine anyhow) specs:
Spark plugs NGK: IZFR6K-11 DENSO: SKJ20DR-M11 Spark Plug .............. Part No............Stock No. Plug Gap OE Laser Iridium ...... IZFR6K11#^ ..... 6994 ........ .044 # Original Equipment Manufacturer, and/or Original Equipment Service Part ^ “Laser Series” Iridium center electrode, and Platinum pad ground electrode :dunno: |
Service manual says the same thing for part #s. 6994 is the stock # for NGK IZFR6K-11.

Iridium plugs normally come pregapped and if slightly wider than factory recommended the plug will fire just fine. The gap can be adjusted by only moving the ground electrode but exert no pressure on the center electrode.
|
They should be pre gapped.
|
oh well....the plugs are in and the car drives fine, im not gunna stress about the gap. thanks for all the info though.
i do feel the car is a bit more responsive after taking it out for a drive. i just thought it would cure this slightly rough idle at start up. it kinda have a slight vibration with like puffing sound. |
Working in a parts store, I say CHECK THE GAP. They are not gentle when shipping anything, and the plugs could be coming all the way from japan. Who knows how many times they have been dropped.
All spark plugs DO come pre gapped, but they may not be gapped TO YOUR VEHICLES SPECS. Just check them... |
I havent had any issues with mine at all. Dropping is no issue since they have that cardboaard cone around it...crushing it is another thing. All spark plugs are gapped...but some of them are not pre gapped to car specs...You cant gap iridiums...at least your not supposed to.

Denso site:
Q. Do I need to set the gap? A. Generally, no. The DENSO Iridium Power plug comes pre-set with a protective sleeve over the firing end, to protect the gap from accidental alteration. DENSO Iridium Power’s ultra-efficient firing power compensates for normally recommended gap settings that are smaller than the pre-set value. In the cases of vehicle modifications (nitrous, turbo-chargers, super-chargers, high power ignition systems, etc.), some adjustments may be desired. Or, if you prefer to remain consistent with factory specifications, you may adjust. However, please be careful not to place any stress on the fine center electrode during adjustment. You could accidentally break off the very hard, and therefore brittle |
Really not sure where all this "don't gap iridiums!" came about. They are like any other spark plug in the world, adjust the metal, never stress the electrode.
|
Bosch platinum +2 and +4 don't require gapping. But those ae the only ones I know of
|
Better add SSD plugs to that list as they don't even have a ground electrode.

And glow-plugs, for that matter, haha
|
Should not need to be regapped but if it makes you feel better you cna buy a gap tool and check them.
|
dont wanna start a new thread so decided to hi-jacked this one...=)
owners manual recommend both NGK and Denso...which one should i really go for? my 05 TL just hit 70K today and i kinda wanna change it....it's a 5AT, and i am not a hardcore driver (rarely goes over 3500rpm...if this info helps.) |
NGK are the best. I've owned 8 Hondas and a 500awhp evo and I would never use anything other than NGK
|
I'd stick with the NGK also, but those plugs have a long way to go before they need replacement.
|
So do u guys think its too early to change them??
|
Plugs do not arrive pregapped for this vehicle....
Seeing some misinformation about the gaps on here. The NGK’s arrived pregapped at .35 for me. All four, the same. My car’s gaps were .38. Factory is .44. The emissions sticker under the hood tells the story. It makes a difference in power and economy to have the correct gap. Fuel will be burned more cleanly and violently with the correct gap. I was stupid enough to leave the pregapped plugs the way they were and now I have to pull them again to actually gap them because I can feel a slight power loss. Fuel eco dropped from 16.9 around town to 11.6. Big big difference. Don’t listen to folks who respond with guesses. Those replies should not be allowed to remain (in my opinion). Good luck! My RDX has 167k so far. PS: the vibration is likely a motor mount. My rear mount is needing replacing and I have a slight vibration also. Dealer told me almost $700 to replace. HA HA HA. $45 from acurapartswarehouse.com and an hour of labor on my back. And I’ll change the oil filter housing leak at the same time for $10 more. The dealer wanted $25 for the gaskets. I love this site. It’s pretty awesome. Acurapartswarehouse is also awesome.

I've installed two different sets of NGKs at 110K and 220K and did not gap them. Car ran/runs fine, no issues. I'm about to change my 3rd set this summer (currently at 310K miles).
