Full tranny flush with Royal Purple

Has anyone done this? I am so tempted and have read everywhere to just use Honda fluid, but I have read very few have actually done this. So what is the latest news? Thanks.

Use the honda fluid, the royal purple may be better, but its not worth voiding the warranty on the transmission because honda can easily show that royal purple is an inferior product compared to theirs due to R and D conducted on their fluids for the TL, etc.

the 6spd. transmissions are a completely different league than the 5ATs. the 6spd's don't have the fluid problems like the 5AT does with dirty fluid with metal bits and such at 30K. You are fine putting in GM synchromesh since the Fluid is PROVEN better.

BTW, if you run the GM synchromesh to fix the 3rd gear issue, I suggest you get it replaced with the updated one and also see the wear on the clutch and save some $$$ in labor for a clutch replacement.

Its against federal law for Acura/Honda to do that. Magnuson-Moss Act prohibits tie-in sales to keep your warranty.

As for Royal-Purple, there web site says it is compatible with Honda Z-1. I did not try it but I did use Amsoils ATF in my 06 TL with no issues.

That law is not a guarantee of a free pass when using aftermarket products.
The warranty cannot be voided if aftermarket products are used, however, the law's protection does not extend to aftermarket parts/products in situations where such parts actually caused the damage being claimed under the warranty.
A little iffy, but they can refuse the warranty claim based on their decision of using an inferior product, then it’s up to the owner to take up the fight.

Stick with the Z1.

I agree with the above post. I have used Amsoil ATF fluid in everything from a Chev Impala to a Lexus including Chrysler products. It is a far superior fluid to any OEM. It will be in my 06 TL soon. Do some research and you will see the benefits. Your tranny will run cooler with Amsoil due to less friction. Heat is the enemy to any tranny.

But has anyone been able to do a full system flush where the old oil is pumped out simultaneously to the new oil pumped in? Is that possible with the TL.

Possible if you have a trans cooler. I think there are a total of two of us with coolers so, no. Honda recommends against it anyway. Just do the 3x3 drain and refill.

I think its in one sitting flush 3 put 3 new quarts of atf in and drive through the gears for 10-15 min so the fluid mixes then do it again flush 3 add new 3 quarts and drive again. repeat one more time, I belive this is the correct way.

Can anyone else please chime in?

Is it safe to mix amsoil ATF with honda Z! like do a 3 quarts of amsoil x 2 times so theres 6 quarts of amsoil and 1.6 quarts of z-1?

I don't think it would be a good idea to mix the fluids together (z1 and amsoil). However your procedure on the 3 x 3 is correct.

Honda Z1 sholud be good enough for most of us around here. and if you change it regularly, you shouldnt run into any prob's. but the amsoil and royal purple, redline products are superior in extreme conditions.
I personally use ATF-Z1 and i change it with every oil change. i know i'm weird but i drive my car pretty hard so doing that just makes me feel better.

a little question on the flush....

what is the tranny oil holding capacity ???
so u pop the drain plug open....drain everything or just drain 3 quarts ??? and then add 3 quarts and repeat 3 times....

right???

On an unmodified 3G TL transmission, draining and refill the transmission three times is the best method available for performing a complete transmission fluid change.

The new multi-vehicle fluids are much better than the ATF-Z1. Lubrizol has developed an additive package to cover most fluids on the market. Their goal is to be able to cover all 30 fluids on the market by 2010 with one additive package. You can read more about it here:

http://assets.2tmedia.com/pr/pdfs/17...sue_1_2008.pdf
http://www.lubrizol.com/products/ATF...spotlights.asp
http://www.lubrizol.com/products/ATF...SSH_LZ9684.pdf
http://www.lubrizol.com/products/ATF...SSH_LZ9680.pdf

Many over-the-counter "multi-vehicle" fluids are also using Lubrizol's additive technology, but I'm not sure which ones. Amsoil uses Lubrizol's additive technology for their ATF. Their Universal ATF works well in Honda vehicles. Others have reported good results with Valvoline's Maxlife ATF as well.

I did a "Royal Flush" as soon as I installed the blower at 10k mi. It took the dealer 20 qts to flush it @ 8 bucks a quart Currently at 32k mi w/ no issues. I just did a single ATF change at 25k mi, ( I didn't know about the 3x3 rule of thumb ) I'll be changing it again soon. I think Royal Purp works great. I also installed a B&M 1500 cooler not too long ago. Now I don't feel too bad when I abuse the tranny a litlle!

Update: I eventually flushed the tranny several years ago using the 3 drain and fill method with Royal Purple. The car now has roughly 150k miles on it and there have been no issues. Shifting has been great before and after the flush.

Damn that 6 year necrobumb! Nice to hear it worked for you, I'm going to be going with a mixed Redline 3x3 on my next oil change.
