Engine Swap
Just a question. I have a 05 auto TL and have done all 105k service. Change oil on time all the time. 121k. I take care of this car very well. Car drives very smooth. I have the very very annoying knock/tick when idle and up to about 1800rpm. I thought the valve adjustment would solve it but didnt. So my pops got a 2001 cl type s w/ 122k that is very quiet and smooth but he rarely uses the car. He offered to swap with me, but we dont know much and there isnt much info. I read his is a J32A1 and the TL is J32A3. Does anyone know if I could swap it? I dont care about losing some power or whatever, I just cant stand the ticking. Like I said its just a question. Id appreciate any info. Thank you.

You missed the point, the J32A1 will not work in a 3G TL; there are just too many differences for the swap to happen for $500. You can insist it will work all you want, but when you get into it, you're going to be very disappointed. Said another way, be smart, figure out what is wrong with your engine or buy a new engine.

cp328, if you are seriously entertaining an engine swap, the difference is the J35A6 is more compatible to your 3rd generation 2005 TL automatic and has been PROVEN here on this forum by teh CL when he swapped one into his 05 TL-6 speed.
Review his thread below for more details.

BTW, If your father's 2nd generation 2001 CL-S is, in fact, a Type-S model, it has a J32A2 engine. The J32A1 you mention came in the CL-P models from 2001-2003. These engines are from a different generation and are not 'drive by wire' like your 05 TL automatic.
I found out that the J35A6 out of the 05+ Odyssey (LX/EX only) is literally a direct drop in. The motors share nearly all of the same part numbers & the main thing was that the transmission bolts right up. Deciding factor was seeing the 7th gen Accord guys dropping it into they're cars easily.

Thanks for the info I appreciate it ... I think these TLs look better than 90% of cars out today. I am the 2nd owner n hope to keep this car for a long time so i really am looking into engine and tranny replacement when time comes. I see it as way cheaper than buying a new car.
Given yours is an Automatic, your best long-term transmission option is the so-called AV6 transmission from a 2007-2008 V6 (not Hybrid) Honda Accord; these transmissions have the manufacturing code of BAYA and are considered to be the best/most reliable and ultimate version of Honda's 5-Speed automatic transmission (at least the ones bolt-up compatible with the 2004-2006 TL's J32A3 and the J35A6 from 2005-2006 Honda Odyssey and 2005 Honda Pilot).

I feel exactly the same way, hence the fact I put about $5,000 of preventative maintenance into my 2006 last year.
