I bought my TL-S with a CAI. I don't like that the filter is so low. Worried that water will get into it. I'm thinking of either making it a short ram or buying one. I did my fog lights yesterday and when i saw how dirty the filter was, it made me rethink its position.

I have the DC Sports CAI, I got it after my OEM rubber intake hose cracked. The install was a breeze, the fit and finish is excellent. I don't notice any significant change in performance but the sound is great under WOT. The filter is super easy to clean no special equipment required, just lukewarm water with dishwashing soap per DC Sports representative that I spoke to. Just dry well before reinstalling.
I have not had any issues in rain and we get pretty heavy rain where I live, often with flooding. Obviously you always want to use precautions when driving in wet weather and avoid flooded streets.

Found a good deal if anyone is interested. A good name brand
CAI for cheap. Pepboys has a 25% off and comes out to $103 and you
can order online and pick it up at the store. I ordered mine yesterday I cant wait. fyi DC sports is owned by AEM.
I was looking at the AEM intake but I can't justify spending 280 on an intake

Edit: Looks like the 25% off expired on 5/18... Oh well, still only $109.21 shipped. Nice deal, thanks for the heads up!!

E39, I clean it every 2 oil changes or roughly around 15000 miles. Its pretty easy to access to remove just the filter once its installed. You don't have to remove the bumper or the wheels. Just loosen the front of the wheel well cover to allow access to the screws to loosen the filter. Than removed the bolts and plastic retaining clips of the plastic shroud on the front bumper on just the driver side. This will allow enough room to slide the filter out to wash and reinstall.

Well, I finally got around to installing this. DCS should be embarrassed with how far off the shock absorber fit is. Luckily, it's an easy fix: Just swap the ground wires to the hole where the resonator shock mount went and then use the ground wire hole for the new shock mount (see photo). And to the OP, the entire dual-metal tubing is supposed to be removed and the supplied large tube goes from the CAI fitting direct to the valve cover fitting.
They give you heater hose to reroute the coolant line, but they don't give you clips for the new heater hose (the existing clips won't fit over the new hose because it's thicker). So, I just used the existing coolant hose and looped it back from the throttle body (see photo).
There is plenty of room between the filter and the bumper. With the windows up, you can still hear the "howl" at WOT. It's very noticeable with the windows down. As far as noticeable performance increase: meh, butt dyno says maybe, maybe not.
Use the existing coolant line and just loop it back from the throttle body to the other fitting:
Just swap the ground wires with the shock mount location:
