Dashboard Cracking (Idea for "MY" fix)

Hey guys, my dash started cracking about 7 months ago and I knew I was screwed from then on. I'm trying to take car of the dash that covers most of the dash, over the airbag, etc. But, as you can see my problem lies on the "other" type of material on our dash. It's separate in a sense from the normal dash vinyl so I was wondering if it would be possible to toss some Di-Noc on there. Maybe a flat black or CF that is matte and won't glare. I figure it's cheaper than a new dash through Acura and I don't want to resort to a dash mat just yet. Has anyone tried Di-Noc on this material yet?? I haven't worked with it ever so I don't know how it holds up or how to use it, but I'm sure it isn't too hard. Can't look worse than this....

The crack in the middle has moved about halfway up the hump and will soon be visible from my seat

Are thinking about wrapping the entire dash or just the part thats cracked. My dash cracked in that section as well and spread to the other part.

I'm in for this too, my dash has a small crack right behind the center channel speaker and I would love to cover it up.

Interested in seeing a dash wrapped in vinyl.

Bet it'd be hard as hell to do.

I'm sure you can just vinyl it, just take the dash off. I remember seeing someone on the boards doing it.

It will not stick. If it does, it likely wont last. I had a hard enough time getting it the stick to the piece of plastic that surrounds the air vents/upper brow display. The adhesive on Di-Noc is not incredibly strong.

^it is pretty strong..but if you have ever used armor all on the piece you are trying to wrap without cleaning the area REALLY good...naturally it isnt going to stick well

I had this problem in wifes 2000TL and sun fading the color.
Lived in Sunny Hot Phoenix at the time.
Sunshades can really help prevent the problem.
But after the fact can be done with colored silicone seal
and I also covered with a monogramed custom "dash cover".

I might be wrong, but I don't think the vinyl would stick at all.

Not a terrible idea I guess. Most times I've seen plastidip it looks a little rough and textured. Maybe that's just prep but I dunno how it would work with a somewhat porous dash material.

If you could find pics of this that'd be great! I'm sure taking the dash apart is a PITA, so I was just planning on doing it like ya see it lol. I just don't like the thick and somewhat cheap look of the dash mats. I think it was Rockstar that got a dashmat not too long ago and that actually looked decent. But I'd like to keep it as low profile as I can..if I can.

Like I said, I never worked with Di-noc or something like it, so I don't know how it sticks or if it would lay flat with those holes being in that portion of the dash. I also remember someone doing the colored/black silicone filler on here, but it just kept cracking past it so it really did nothing. That might have been Rockstar also. Did anyone ever somewhat confirm why these dashes are doing this?? Is it going from extreme heat to cold or vise versa?

Just the part that has holes along it as that's whats cracking. No cracks that I can see anywhere else...yet (knock on wood).

You can always stop a crack from spreading further by drilling a small hole at the end of it. Then you can start worrying about repairing/covering it.

I would assume if the the vinyl 'does' stick to the dashboard, when a new crack forms the vinyl is just going to get stretched at the new cracked area and will just look abornmal..

Save yourself the hassle and just get a dash cover. Dash cover costs $30-$40. The amount of vinyl you will need to purchase to get the job done will cost the same, but even more pain in the ass just to get it right and looking perfect.

Can't go wrong with a dash cover. I've been complimented plenty of times that it makes the interior look nice. Some even say it makes the inside of the car seem cozy and comfortable.

That wont stop it though. A new crack will likely build off the hole. I understand where you're coming from though

True. I just want the lowest profile dash cover that looks like it's not even there lol

Thanks for the link

Drilling a hole at the tip of the crack does help in my experience. However, my experience on this subject relates to cracks in a sheet metal body on a dirt late model and not to a plastic dashboard. lol I still think it is worth a shot.

Our dash cracks are definitely related to expansion and contraction of the material used, at least in that area. When it was 110 degrees in the summer, the crack would disappear and mend back together. Now that is 40 or below, the crack is clearly spread apart about the distance of .7 lead lol (can you tell I've been studying for finals). It stays like that too. Any new hole will just add stress to that part and it will build off that later.

You might be right about the vinyl becoming stretched as new cracks form and move the dash further apart where the cracks present themselves. As I said, I've been super busy with finals (took one today in Depositional Systems and Stratigraphy ). Just got my system back up and running today so they'll be lots of fine tuning and then maybe onto a dash mat or whatever else I might brainstorm in that time. Anyone else have any other idea's??

I've never looked into the 3M stuff so does anyone have the best/cheapest place to get it? Is there something that's the same that works as well?? I assume 3M is top-notch from all the user's on here, but I don't wanna drop and arm and a leg if it won't stick after a few days.

I have the same issue (sorry for the gigantic pics). Is this crack going to spread into my gauge cluster? What could go wrong? Does drilling a hole at the tip of the crack really work? What's the best material to fill in and hide it?
e issue!

There's no filling or mending it that I'm aware of. You either live with it, replace the dash, or get a dash cover.

There's a huge thread in the Problems & Fixes forum about cracked dashes (It is, in fact, the largest thread in that forum).

Anyone ever thought about using Sugru to fill up the cracks?

https://sugru.com/cars-motorcycles/h...-car-dashboard

Might be worth a shot.

Sorry, semi off topic, but I never noticed that cool perforated looking material on the gauge cluster bin. Very cool idea on Acura's part.

Anyone have success using plastex? It seems perfect to fill in the crack and it includes a molding bar to match the textured finish. Then I thought to add some vinyl paint to color match. What do you guys think?

I've filled with black sugru (post 23 above) and it seems to hold up ok. Doesn't look horrible, but obviously my eyes go there every time I get in the car. I would try Sugru if you have one or two cracks, but more than that it will probably look pretty messy. I rolled a little of the product into a couple of thin 'noodles' and smoothed them into place. I could have done better, but it's nicer than watching a dash crack grow.

How has the sugru held up tomlinson? Been thinking of a way to repair my dashboard cracks without going mat or coverlay route. I tend to not notice them as much during the summer, but during these colder months they split open awfully.

It's because of the different material and expansion rates of the different materials. If they don't match, then you're making the problems worse.
