Check In If You've Never Had A Major Problem With Your TL
With all the advice for problems threads on here, it almost seems like all TL's are troublesome. I thought it would be interesting to see how many of us haven't had major problems. Maybe give the mileage as well. I have 131K miles on my TL. It's an automatic but I haven't experienced any transmission issues (hope I'm not jinxing myself here). Outside of routine maintenance it has pretty much been trouble free. I did have an issue with the headlights acting weird but a relatively inexpensive trip to the dealership seems to have fixed it. Oh, and I have one crack on the dash which appeared about a year ago but hasn't grown since then. I'm hoping for about 130K more miles before we part ways!

I'm on my second 07 Type S, which was at 185k miles (it was totaled). My current one sits at 101k. None of them have even come close to thinking about giving me trouble.

OP - Too superstitious to comment on my own personal car but I will say that the statement "...it almost seems like all TL's are troublesome..." is completely opposite what comes to mind. My V-dub, Bimmer, and Audi friends love their cars but do seem to lay out more cash on them more frequently for repairs. Have I had some issues, sure, but I wouldn't call them"troublesome".
Remember - Any BBS like this is going to be a lens that focuses on issues. We don't write in every day to say how good things are going. Although there are some off topic areas here it's pretty focused on the cars and help. Other BBSs I frequent have more sections like "Lounges", "Politics", etc. So there's more "fluff" and "fodder" to break up things. So for the most part you see calls for help. It can distort your perception if you aren't carefull

You know more than half of the young 'uns on here have no idea what you just said.
My '05 has close to 140k and no major issues. A handful of minor issues over the years, but nothing crazy. For the most part, still one of the less problematic vehicles I have owned....other than maybe my tC which was brand new and I only had it for 25k miles.

185500 miles on my 07 and I have had very few problems....most very minor. Best car I have owned. Keep thinking about getting a new car and then I remember that my payments are $0 and that I still love driving this one. Maybe if the TLX gets a handle on the transmission issues I will look at that at mid cycle.

I believe he was talking about the starter, which gets used with time until the brushes need to be changed. So technically, it will need to get changed at some point in the life of a car.

At least with the 07 and 08 models, I don't see what problems you'd ever have for the first 200k, aside from starters, oxygen sensors, coil for the fuel cap message, and maybe an A/C or radiator fan relay. Oh and rattles lol.

Make it so
I guess it depends on what the definition of "major" is (i.e. a certain amount spent on repairs, a horrible event like a breakdown, etc), but here's my list for my 04 TL pushing 183,000 miles:
-Replaced all three motor mounts two weeks ago
-Replaced 2nd bank catalytic converted last week (along with its two O2 sensors)
-Replaced one lower control arm a year and a half ago
-Replaced LCA bushings three weeks ago
-105k service
-Full trans fluid replacement with Redline Racing/D4/Lightweight two months ago + pressure switches
The only unresolved issue is my seats- the perforated leather is awful in every way possible and is too prone to cracking and splitting. I've got some small tears on my passenger seat and it drives me crazy because I'm OCD on details like that.
All in all, it's been a great car. Preventative maintenance goes a long way for a car like this one where repair bills from neglect can go into the thousands of dollars, but that's the same for any car.

Currently at ~73800 miles,no problems other than steering wheel pinion leak (~50K miles), alternator change (~60K miles), AAP sensor (65K miles), O2 sensor ( 66K miles)...all were replaced under warranty with $100 deductible. Recently got ST rotors and pads from our vendor Excelerate.
At this point, there is warranty, so it is fine. For future i have a good friend who can help replace parts.
I still love the car as much as i did when i got it at 23K miles in end of Jan 2011.

89k miles on a 2008. Tensioner under warranty and changed again with gates aftermarket out of warranty by me. Been good since. Was going to trade it in today on f150 and going to keep the TL. It's been paid off for years and seems to run like a top. I too will change the gas cap evap sensor one of these days when it annoys me enough. Based on all the people on here I pray it can go another 100k with typical maintenance.

The car has been very good.
2004 TL at 108,000 (purchased at 30k) replaced tires two times (came with non stock tires), battery once, front brake pads once, fluids..., one windshield recently... changed second and third gear pressure switches once (minor shudder from 80-87k and switches fix the issue), cabin filter once, new painted front bumper, alignment once, air filters three times,
It has been sitting outside the last two years in Colorado, plus outside during work week (driven every day) and dash is fine (no protective treatment ever but use sun shade most of the time), put conditioner on seats once and they have a few cracks on drivers seat (no tears), paint looks good and I have never waxed it but wash it at the car wash and use the clear coat protectant spray at the car wash.
I believe that parts of the car were repainted before I bought it because there were no chips up front and no signs of a clear bra. Some of the clear coat has peeled below doors and I replaced the front bumper (mentioned above) because of paint damage from dragging front of car on dip and too much small rock paint chipping likely due to the poor repainting. I am well past due on the 105k service and will do this summer but am not too concerned because many of the miles were highway and almost no short city driving.
The car has been very reliable and would buy again.

05 with 125k. Rear brake caliper, replaced side mirror glass. That's it other than normal maintenance.
Best car reliability wise compared to previous: Toyota camry, Avalon, Mazda rx7. Still looks like a three year old car.

07 base with 136K miles. The only real mechanical problem I have had is I replaced the alternator two weeks ago. Don't count that really as a "problem" though. Oh another thing is my passenger side seat does slide forward and backward anymore, but the back of it will recline still. Took the seats out to clean underneath them last spring and when I reinstalled it, it wouldn't work anymore.

My first major issue came at 70k I had to replace my passenger's side axle then at 115k My 04 6Mt steering rack started leaking. Other than that no issues, and that's 20k after nearly hydro-locking it.
I do also probably over maintain it though. I used to use semi-synthetic oil and changed it every 3k(the MID oil life never got below 60%). I since switched to REAL synthetic(Castrol 0-W40) and change it every 5k. I change trans fluid about every 30k along with brake and clutch fluid). I never sit at a stoplight with my foot on the clutch, I always put it into 4th before going into 1st gear, I double clutch and rev match my downshifts.
I pretty much baby my car mechanically because I'm going to drive it until it dies, but from owning numerous Hondas/Acuras I know 300k will be no problem.

07 with 101,000. At 60,000 the torque converter needed replaced.... Under warranty. Then at 70,000 the nav unit in the trunk went. Was good willed and only had to pay a portion to replace. Other than that, the car has been fantastic.

05 AT with 125k miles. Aside from an engine knock that's apparently not that harmful, the car's been pretty good. Previous owner neglected it so I caught up on all bushings, end links, ball joints and axles and now everything's pretty good. Tranny feels solid and shocks are getting replaced this summer even though they don't feel bad. HFL started acting up this week, I might try the oven trick!

bought my 04 TL at 52k, now at about 86k. Only left me stranded when the battery (that was there when i bought it) died.
