Castrol Syntech or Mobil 1 in new TL?
I'm going to switch to synthetic oil at the first service and my Acura dealer uses Castrol Syntech (fully synthetic). Is there any preference on this forum for either Castrol Syntech or Mobil 1. I'm limiting it to these 2 oils as they are readily available in my area for a decent price. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Steve

Though M1 isn't the absolute best, it is very hard to beat M1 with regards to the overall package- performance, price, and avaliability.
With that said, M1 would be the preferred choice, but at the same time, I would discount Castrol Syntec either, so I wouldn't spend an extra $5 for M1. (Or whatever the extra cost may be)

Is the 5-20 standard for the newer TL's or are you using it because of the warmer weather? I use Mobil One but use the 5-30 that is recommended for my 01 TL.

5w20 is recommended for > MY2001 Honda/Acura vehicles if I recall correctly.
If anything, the users who switch viscosity on a seasonal basis would be switching to a thicker oil in the summer, not thinner.
Also, fwiw, if I had to purchase synthetic oil for a TL, I would use M1 5w30 in the big 5-quart jugs at Walmart for $20. Why? Because if I had to purchase individual quarts of 5w20, it would cost $10 more. :2cent:

Thats a good idea buying at Walmart. I have to compare it to Costco prices but I think Walmart is cheaper. Still curious about the 5-20 though, I double checked in my car and it says 5-30 Guess the other guy just prefers the lighter weight.

I buy the 5QT jug of 5W-20 Castrol Syntech for $18.99 @ Wallmart and they also sell the ST filter for $1.99, at those prices I can afford to do the oil changes at 5k intervals on both my Hondas, BTW I buy 4 @ a time because who knows with the gas prices, is a matter of time when all the other products will start to go up in price...

Pennzoil Platinum is a good product.
You really cannot go wrong with any over-the-counter SM/GF-4 0w20, 5w20, 0w30, 5w30, or 10w30 in the TL...or even any correct sized filter provided that the combination is changed at a REASONABLE interval. Of course, some products are better than others, and some are of a better value than others, but not one oil nor one filter will provide significantly longer engine life for 95% of the users.
