Beware-your key fob could leave your windows open unintentionally!!!!!!!!!!

Upon returning to my 04 in a parking lot I found to my horor that ALL my windows were rolled DOWN about 8 inches. Almost had a heart attack!! I became really paranoid since I always make sure that everything is locked up tight before leaving the lot. This is the 3rd time I have experienced this- previously windows had rolled down 4-6 inches. Before I had dismissed it as a fluke, never to occur again. Wrong!! Also found that the sunroof was open slightly-something I never do. So I tried to backtrack in my mind and find the answer since these incidents were happening without my knowledge. I went to the manual-got no help there. Then decided to do a search before making a fool out of myself here and voila- there it was- documented by many. Maybe not read by all but I certainly missed the reports since they originated with the early 04. Thank God for all who reported this, including our sharp moderator Ron. I feel that it should be emphasized that one should NOT press the unlock button TWICE and HOLD carelessly. Be aware of this screwy feature of the key fob. And that includes making sure the buttons not get touched by anything else in the pocket/same storage. It would be irresponsible not to inform owners of this example of fine Japanese engineering. Right. Happy motoring you all!

it's not a screwy feature of the key fob

it was designed if you press twice and hold UNLOCK it will roll down your windows and open the sunroof completly if you hold it long enough

also if you are locking up your car why would you be pressing unlock?

CORRECTION- I did find it after posting an hour earlier. The manual covers this phenomena under: Power windows and transmitter. Not under keys, not under windows. Never the less, I still feel that it is an unnecessary feature. Imagine the time savings while you walk up to it-being able to start airing the car out 10 seconds before you enter it! Plus we do not realize how close the lock and unlock buttons are to each other on that tiny transmitter, plus what if you have de decent size thumb which could hit either one? There are numerous opportunities for something to go wrong- which means your car could be gone!! I feel better now that I know that I was man enough to admit to this slight oversight. Sleep tight.

It really helps to have your windows/roof open about 5-10 mins before getting in the car on a hot day. The FOB should beep when this happens so you are aware.

The fob does not have a beeper in it. The car will beep, but only to confirm the lock, not the unlock or window opening.

When you finally get your TL you will be able to learn all of this first hand and not by conjecture.

I actually think its a great feature. Cools the car from 120 degrees to a comfortable 98 so even though it's hot, I don't melt.

I think it is an excellent feature. Anyone who parks in the sun knows how useful the feature is. I use the feature every day, leave the windows rolled down a few minutes before I get into the car. Anyway, if you can accidently roll down your windows, you can also obviously accidently unlock your car. Best resolution...be careful with your fob to prevent an accidently unlock.

I know the FOB doesnt Beep, I was saying it SHOULD, as that would be a good feature, however I worded it poorly.

Dont know about other Acura dealers, but after we bought our TL we were taken to an orientation program (about 30 mins long) that had someone from the dealer take us to another TL on the lot and introduced us to nearly all of the car's features. The all window down/up feature was one of them.

You also can open and close all of the windows by putting the key into the door and turning it clockwise once, release, and turn the key clockwise again while holding it. All of the windows will then begin to go down. To close all of the windows, do the above except turn the key counter clockwise instead of clockwise in those steps. You CANT close the windows with the keyfob, you can only open them.

Keys on the fob will contact the buttons especially when you put your keys in your pocket. If things are just right then it could be the button that puts the windows down. My old man's ES330 was parked at my sisters house and all the windows and moon roof were open during a down poor. It was the "old keys making contact in the pocket" problem. The fob on his car has some serious range.

I've noticed a pretty short range for my fob and that's just fine with me. Less chance for inadvertent actuation of the buttons.

You could always put the fob in some sort of cover to lesten the chances but that's just a PITA for most times.

I also think that this is a GREAT FEATURE. I live in Washington DC Its hot its humid and being able to let some hot air escape the car as i walk up to it is great. My moms Honda Accord does the same thing and i think this might of been a feature that came from the VW's.

Its a great feature, but we should have an auto up rain feature, in fact, every car should, rain spells disaster.

Key Fob Windows Down

Does anyone know how to turn this function off? I've read the manual, but maybe I'm missing something. I had my car for one day and didn't realized this function existed, so my car is down drenched. Ugh. Please help.

I've owned the car for over 5 years and always keep my keys in my pocket and I've never experienced this. In fact, the range is so short I'm surprised others are having this issue.

There was another issue where the window module will roll all of the windows partially down overnight.

This has happened to me twice but luckily I realized it before I walked away. Usually happens after I take the keys out and go to put them in my pocket. Gotta be extra careful, that's why I always look at my car when I'm walking away from it, (make sure no one is too close to me, windows up, parked straight etc)

Same thing i almost have to get 15 feet within the car before i can even unlock it. also have owned my tl now for 5 years and have never had this problem, but i actually think this feature is perfect when its 100 out and my nbp is hotter then hell

Agreed. I have the same color and rolling all windows down even 10 seconds ahead of time lets that giant heat wave out.

I just picked up my 2005 TL three weeks ago and twice this has happened to me (fortunately not while it's been snowing). This is certainly something to keep note of, my '98 Audi A4 did the same thing but I should've expected my newer (and infinitely better!) TL to do the same

I own a 2012 MDX for 2+ years and it happened to me twice inadvertently. Once in parking lot where I saw all windows were down and the sunroof opened. It is impossible to press the button in sequence and hold it down while the key was in my jacket's pocket. The second time just happened last night in my garage while I kept the key on a counter. All windows was half way down, the sunroof was opened a bit while the car was locked.

I wonder if it is possible the car can receive other signals than its own key? and is there any way to turn off the feature? Please help.

Did that while washing the car. So key's no longer sit in my back pocket. But it's a cool feature when walking up to the car.

The keys on my fob are not easy to press...I'm having a hard time wondering how this could happen inadvertently.

Agree it's cool feature, but nobody wants to open a door to a thief inadvertently! Should be a way to turn if off temporarily? Google searches disclose many cars have this feature, from Toyota, Honda, VW... and I owned many cars before, but none of them surprised me.

Cheers,

Just discovered this this morning, after it rained last night. I was laying on my bed with my keys on the front of me on my belt loop. I swore when I woke up and saw my sunroof open all the way and my windows down, that I had put them up last night. So my car is soaked. Just got it two months ago. It’s funny because I knew about being able to open and close the windows with the key, and thought why couldn’t the fob do the same thing. Now I know it can open the windows. Great. Why won’t it close them too though? Wonderful.

You can with a KP Technologies module. Then you press the lock button twice within 1.5 sec’s, and they’ll close. You have to wire the module to the door lock. Just look up KP technologies....

Sorry to re open a thread from 1864, lol. But I tried looking them up but can’t find them. I found the kp tech website and emailed tech support to see if they still make them. Their website isn’t supported on my phone browser I guess. Thank you though!
