Bad Gas Mileage
I have seen alot of people on this forum claiming they are getting 27 (give or take) mpg. I get about 17 on average. Any ideas on why this could be?

How is you're driving behavior? If you have more of a heavy foot ( aka spirited driving), then gas mileage will go down. But mainly depends if its city or highway driving. I get about the same as you, maybe worse. But I do a lot of local city driving ( constant stop and go, lots of traffic lights, etc.) so i get about 15-20 mpg. Recently, i took a small road trip and got about 25-ish highway mpg. Some factors that could lower gas mileage could be bad plugs, 02 sensors, tire type, exhaust leak, unhealthy engine, unnecessary weight on the car.

Get on the highway put cruise control at 80 mph and you will see 30+ mpg.

This. Alot of times as other have stated it is about your driving style. I used to have to do a 250+ mile commute and if I filled up and immediately got on the highway I was always above 30mpg. Include town/city driving with constant accelerating from stops and it drops to low 20's.

So it looks like you're averaging just under 21 miles per hour; my assumption is you're sitting in heavy traffic, with the A/C running, and doing lots of stop and go. Fact of life, that kind of traffic environment will cause crap fuel economy.

Looks about right to me. True stop and go slow city driving will net you high teens. As your average MPH goes up, your MPG should go up. Go take your car for a nice 50 mile highway run at 65mph, reset the MID, and I bet you will end up right around the 30MPG range.

I drove about 240 miles in one day last week. I reset the MPG counter at the start of my journey and averaged 31 MPG with cruise on at 74 MPH.
This was 95% freeway miles with minimal slowing.

Mix of congested highways, city, and back roads that I do every day, gets me low 20s. Typical highway mileage is 28-29 but I have a lead foot.
When I don't have a lead foot, this is my all time record, although typically I get low 30s driving carefully at 65-70mph:
