Drove an 04 TL...

Hi,

I have a 99 TL and drove an 04 TL with appx 30k miles on it this weekend. I noticed that there were lots of engine vibrations when accelerating, felt mostly through the steering wheel. My TL does this a bit at low RPM's (800-1200) but this TL seemed to have it up to 2500 RPM's. It was quite annoying. Do you think there was something wrong with the TL I drove or is this common amongst the third gen? The owner of this TL doesn't beat on it if that's what anyone's thinking.

Other things I noticed was Acura didn't seem to fix the weak start when starting a hot engine and the leather seemed to get thinner. It had lots of crack lines and bubbles from where people sat on the seat. I really hope they improve their leather quality. I would expect to see this on a car with 100k+ miles on it.

Anyone know if they're adding more torque to the TL in 07? I've seen the thread on the 07 but didn't have time to read all 1200+ posts. :-)

Cheers,
Roshan

To me, mine is smooth, but it only has 3k of miles. I had a 01 CL-S as well, and it feels about the same to what I remember.

I hear the seat leather argument and I also get the weak start.

Frankly acura cut the corners. Sad but true.

Perhaps say hit to the 07 g35 sedan when it comes out?

Mines smooth as silk with 33,000km on it, maybe your friend has a bumed mount on it or something. It could just be the frequency response in the chasis that i have never noticed, but if at say 2500 rpm the engine resonates at a certain frequency you may feel a subtle vibration through the chasis or steering. But I have never noticed this although i have read in SI forums that this is common around that rpm range so it could be simply a matter of resonance that the cancelling devices couldnt cover or there could be something wrong with your buddies car. Maybe a few other owners here can chime in on if they have noticed it, but i havent as far as i can remember.

sorry to hijack the thread, but your username is so funny. Is it from that old show on MTV, Undergrads?

Now, to add to the thread, my car has about 13,500 miles on it, and it still runs smoothly. I hope by 30K miles, it's not as you described

I drove it again today. When I started it up (cold engine) the engine was VERY bumpy. I felt so many vibrations coming from it. This is something I noticed in my second gen TL but it is not nearly as bad this third gen. Also was not impressed by the radio. I think the second gen sounds a lot better. I did however like the feature that opens up all windows and the sunroof when holding down the unlock button. Thats nice to have on a 95 degree day. :-) The brakes are also 100 times better than the second gen.

i wonder if those vibrations are related to getting a new engine mount or so

I have an '04, just shy of 27,000 miles, and mine seems smooth except in rare cases such as yesterday, when I drove after not having driven since Sunday. Got a few vibrations until I had driven about four miles, but then it was fine. Today I was driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and seldom dipped below 80 mph; briefly touched 105 mph at one point and the car still felt rock-solid.

Most likely.

My 2004 is smooth all the way to 90+ mph, where I spent much of my time today while traversing the country.

the 07 (or 08, I forget), has the optional 3.5L, which is 300hp (or more like 330 if rated on the old system)

Hi,

Is there an article out somewhere that says this or is this based on speculation?

Some of the 04 TLs had vibrations that are much worse than others, I had one of the very bad ones. Acura had a TSB to fix the vibrations, but they only got marginally better. Make sure you drive other 3rd gen TLs before you buy one to see the differences.

my 04 had 34000 miles and its just as smooth as the day i bought it, and i have a tendency to drive hard. My only thing is i hate all the rattles i get, this could be due to the sub and the stiff drop but thats the only thing i hate about this car.
