According to Gas Buddy, We've Been Added to the Takata Air Bag Recall
Just got an email from GasBuddy claiming American Honda Motor Company has added the following cars to the recall list:
2003 Acura 3.2 CL 2013-2016 ILX 2013-2014 ILX Hybrid 2007-2016 RDX 2004-2006 and 2009-2014 TL 2010-2013 ZDX 2001-2007 and 2009 Accord 2001-2005 Civic 2003-2005 Civic Hybrid 2001-2005 Civic GX NGV 2002-2007 and 2010-2011 CR-V 2003-2011 Element 2007 Fit 2002-2004 Odyssey 2003-2008 Pilot 2006-2014 Ridgeline . . |
Grrrr I just had this done on the racecar, now the DD too...
A Honda dealer should be able to do this replacement correct? |

A Honda dealer should be able to do this replacement correct? However my wife's 16 RDX and daughter's 09 Accord is....... |
scary! I blew my drivers air bag once. Very glad I'm still here today.
and I live in an area with 100% humidity. humidity is what causes the air bag components to degrade. |

Based on the list of models posted by DMZ and your vehicles listed in your signature block - you and I are not included (07 and 08).
However my wife's 16 RDX and daughter's 09 Accord is....... Basic reading comprehension > me today :tomato: Seems weird that they'd change airbag manufacturer half-way thru the generation.... then back to Takata for the next gen  |

A VIN lookup for an 05 TL comes back clean still, they must be still updating the lookup site. |
Meh, I think Gas Buddies has bad info.
Today, Honda announced a recall of air bags installed during the first recall. As far as TLs go, only 02-03 TLs are involved. Edit: Never mind, I miss-read the article. Read the full article. Interesting back story to how they arrived at this new recall. And yes, this sucks for us 3G owners...: The recall covers certain Honda and Acura models largely in the U.S. and Canada. Included are the 2001 to 2007 and 2009 Honda Accord, the 2001 to 2005 Civic, the 2002 to 2007 and 2010 and 2011 CR-V, the 2003 to 2011 Element, the 2007 Fit, the 2002 to 2004 Odyssey, the 2003 to 2008 Pilot, and the 2006 to 2014 Ridgeline pickup. Also included are certain 2003 Acura 3.2CL cars, as well as the 2013 to 2016 ILX, the 2003 to 2006 MDX, the 2007 to 2016 RDX, the 2002 to 2003 3.2TL, the 2004 to 2006 and 2009 to 2014 TL, and the 2010 to 2013 ZDX. |
Interesting, 06 reflects as clear but 03 Type S has the recall. Looks like dealer visit is in my future.

How do we go about finding out if we need it or not? Just call the dealership? |

It's unfortunate and fortune news for us 2004-2006 TL owners. I will say this, the dealership I worked for (years back) was on top of their inventory with inflators. We were doing 10-15 recalled 2nd gen TL inflators every day. Very easy job to do. However, considering my vehicle has not seen a dealership in the last 4 years (they replaced my dashboard under goodwill) I'm very hesitant on having them work on my TL. I would rather do the recall myself in their parking lot to be honest, but i'll see if any of my previous co-workers are still around that would do the job. I did run my vin on Acura's website and it doesn't come back with any open recall on the airbag inflator. I have called the two local dealerships who I have a lot of connections with, apparently this is all new news to them. All I was told is to hang on tight til Honda/Acura corporate start running vins. I had a feeling our vehicles were affected because i've looked at our inflators many times and noticed the same stampings the 2nd gen had. Of course Acura would delay on this since the 3rd gen TL was one of the highest selling generation. Wait 15 years later to do this year so that most 04-06 are already in their graves.

I agree but based on the post - it is what it is :dunno:

I'm a little confused. In its statement, Honda says the only affected vehicles are A) those that were previously recalled and received a replacement inflator, or B) those that had an inflator replaced following a deployment.
The vehicles involved in this recall were previously repaired using specific Takata desiccated replacement inflators (PSDI-5D) or entire replacement airbag modules containing these inflators, neither subject to recall at that time. ... Since this recall involves replacement inflators installed in vehicles previously subject to recall, the total number of Honda and Acura vehicles affected by Takata recalls does not change with this action. |

Figured at some point this would happen. Expecting my G35 will be added eventually.

From that NHTSA link, this recall does not appear to include original inflators:
The affected vehicles received a replacement driver air bag inflator as part of a previous Takata inflator recall remedy or a replacement driver air bag module containing the same inflator type as a service part. |
The DetailsVehicles involved: 1.1 million cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks, including:
The fix: Honda says it has replacement parts available for affected owners, and will begin notifying them in early April. It also says that replacement vehicles will be made available if needed. How to contact the manufacturer: Owners can check to see whether their vehicle needs a replacement airbag by checking recalls.acura.com and recalls.honda.com, or they can call 888-234-2138. NHTSA campaign number: 19V182 |
I received a call from a long time buddy of mine who works in the parts department. They were aware of this since early last week or so. The parts are being supplied soon to the dealership where they will start reaching out to owners of these 2004-2006 3rd gen TL's. Same thing happened with my wife's engine recall, everyone knew about it for MONTHS and it took MONTHS for them to come up with the recall notice with the correct repair needed. Two years later they are still sending out new recall stuff for those that had their engines replaced and for a knock sensor recalibration to be done. In other words, it will take some time, but I see this moving along quickly.

That doesn't read like 250k+ additional vehicles just got recalled. But if the PSDI-5D found its way into previously non-recalled vehicles as part of a repair, wouldn't today's recall still increase the total number of recalled vehicles?

04-06 TL Takata Driver Airbag Safety RecallNHTSA RECALL NUMBER:19V-182MFR CAMPAIGN ID:M45 CAMPAIGN DESCRIPTION:04-06 TL Takata Driver Airbag Safety Recall RECALL DATE:03/06/2019 RECALL STATUS:17 Character VIN Required SUMMARY:American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Acura) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 Acura TL vehicles. A replacement driver frontal airbag inflator was installed in your vehicle to remedy a previous airbag inflator recall, or that a driver frontal airbag module containing the replacement inflator was installed in your vehicle as a service part. The replacement driver frontal airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure upon deployment. If an affected airbag deploys, the increased internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture. SAFETY RISK:In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material and into the vehicle interior at high speed, potentially causing serious injury or death to you or others in the vehicle. REMEDY:Please call any Acura dealer and make an appointment to have the driver frontal airbag module replaced for free. For additional questions or to get help locating a dealer, owners may contact American Honda Customer Support and Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138. |

The 2004-2006 TL doesn't appear in either of those lists. Somebody is fucking up the messaging somewhere here.

I suppose they don’t have to remove dash to replace this do they? Would be a great time to get the cracks taken care of! If any of this is true! |
Driver side only... And this recall is only to replace airbags/actuators that were previously replaced, not the original airbag/actuator...

^well damn! |
TSB 19-020 - Safety Recall: Driver's Airbag Replacement Inflator Can Be Over-Pressurized (Module Replacement)
Applies To: 2004-06 TL - ALL - Check the iN VIN status for eligibility http://www.urvi.net/forumfiles/SB/B19-020.PDF http://techinfo.honda.com/Rjanisis/p...nu/B19-020.PDF |
Yeah, so since 3G TLs were never on the original recall list, the only 3G TLs affected by this recall are 04-06 TLs which had an airbag replaced (due to deployment or airbag related MIL, maybe for some other reason I'm not thinking of)..
I'm guessing that Justn's TL will be on this list (I think his curb eating TL was a 3G?). The rest of us 3G owners that still have the original airbag are not affected by this latest recall. |
From the NTSB web site:
https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2006/A...DR/FWD#recalls Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling specific 2003 Acura 3.2CL, 2013-2016 ILX, 2013-2014 ILX Hybrid, 2003-2006 MDX, 2007-2016 RDX, 2002-2003 3.2TL, 2004-2006, and 2009-2014 TL, 2010-2013 ZDX and 2001-2007 and 2009 Honda Accord, 2001-2005 Civic, 2003-2005 Civic Hybrid, 2001-2005 Civic GX NGV, 2002-2007 and 2010-2011 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, 2007 Fit, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2008 Pilot, and 2006-2014 Ridgeline vehicles. The affected vehicles received a replacement driver air bag inflator as part of a previous Takata inflator recall remedy or a replacement driver air bag module containing the same inflator type as a service part. Due to a manufacturing error, in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver frontal air bag, these inflators may explode. My understanding is ALL 2004-2006 TLs were impacted by the original airbag recall, and as such, will be covered by A) the original recall (if the airbag has yet to be replaced), or B) the new recall (if the airbag was replaced under the original recall). Since I was not a TL owner back when the original round of airbag recalls hit the street, I'm not sure if my understanding is correct. I'd appreciate it if someone would correct me if I'm wrong. |
