I did my reading of quite a few threads on yellow fogs and super white replacement 9006 bulbs for the fogs in our TL and didn't come across this so I hope I'm not asking a question that's already been answered. If it has please point me in the right direction... so anyway...

I've purchased different sets of 9006 super white bulbs for myself and friends for honda's and toyota's in the past, all of which are just standard 55w bulbs. Just wanted to get that fake xenon look. For some reason even though they're regular wattage, quite a few of the sockets that these bulbs go in seem to melt a lot. I've used APC and Hyper industries, stuff I got off eBay, and after a while, maybe like months to half a year, I would check and the sockets would be melted around the bulb. The bulbs still work though and I've had some that have lasted almost 2 years. My question is, is anyone having this problem with their new yellow fog lights or super white lights, or had this problem in the past also? I want to buy some yellow fogs and a pair of whites to match the xenon but I don't want the socket to be melting. Is their a brand someone can recommend for both yellow and white? My friend also just bought a Rav4 so I'm trying to find some super whites for her car too. I've seen some cars on the road with really nice looking fakes that have a nice white/slightly bluish color and are really bright and have always wondered what brand they use. Anyone have a link to a site to buy them? Thanks in advance!

I use "Cool Blue" from Sylvania (i think) in the headlights of my accord. I've never had any such problem. Even tho theyre called cool blue, the light that comes out is pretty white. Im not sure how white you need them but Im happy with them.

I put in PIAA Ion Yellow Bulbs for the fogs. Looks great! I'll try to snap some pics tonight for ya.

with prevoius cars I used Sylvania silver stars. The light is very white, the only problem is that they are more money and they only last about 6 months.

piaa plasma sparks are good but expensive- Koba is the best brand on ebay, if its still around. Put some in my moms beemer about 2 yrs ago, they still work fine.

The only reason the socket would melt is excessive heat and the only way to generate excessive heat is that the bulb wattage is signficantly higher than the claimed 55w.

Most of these "ultrawhite" xenon pretender bulbs are usually 85w to compensate for the loss of light output from the blue tint they use. And most of them are coming from Korea with pretty questionable quality. I wouldn't be too surprised if they were deliberately mis-labeled as 55w to get past the regs on bulb wattage.

yea i guess that might be it...the mislabeling, since i bought 55w bulbs just to avoid the overheating and it still happened. with so many brands out there it's hard to find one that's good quality that doesn't cost so much. i definitely stay away from the $2 bulbs but even the $20 ones are bad. piaas are nice but i'm not sure if they're worth it cause i hear about them burning out just as quickly as the cheap bulbs.

those look pretty cool...do you know anyone that uses those for their driving lights? my friend just bought a 07 rav4 and it uses 9006 headlights. you think those are bright enough for driving? i was thinking about getting them for my friend. 6000k is probably starting to dim a little in terms of brightness. how long have those lasted for you?

I had a 03 Passat and they are very touchie about the 55W thing or they burn up the harness. I used the Phillips

I can confirm that, just replaced the second Sylvania 9006 on my Accord, each of them only lasted about 5 month and a little over 10k miles. There ought to be a warning on their package.

No i dont know anyone that uses those without HIDs but looking at where the foglights reach that the HIDs dont it does look kind of dim and i had those since Feb or 6 months and 8500 miles.

I guess depend on what brand you uses. If you uses a reputable brand like PIAA, Raybrig or Sylvania. I think those are ok and won't melt your socket harness. I know certain brand will melt the socket. I used this brand Mtec and uses the high wattage bulb for the low beam and melt the socket. I guess another solution is replacing your stock socket to a heavy duty socket that would handle any high wattage bulbs.

Thanks for the pics Johnny 2k....those look awesome. man it seems like everyone on AZ is an expert photographer or something. i guess i'll shop around for a good price on the polargs. i guess from what i've been looking at the raybrigs, polargs, and piaas are the more reliable brands but also the most expensive, up to 75 bucks! i am planning on checking out the heavy duty sockets at kragens this weekend. i'm not sure how those go on the car....whether you attach them to the existing socket as an extension and plug in the bulb, or you have to cut your original socket off and replace it with the heavy duty one. i'll post what i find out. thanks for everyone's input.
