I love this thread! Congrats, OP! I sold my 2005 6MT TL back in 2014 or so with 325k miles. It had the original clutch and ran great! A coworker of mine, who is a service manager for commercial trucks, begged me to buy it instead of trading it in. He still has it and the car has 370k miles. These things are bulletproof!

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that you've managed over 400k on the original automatic transmission - regular fluid and filter changes aside. Let alone the fact you waited until ~300k to change the timing belt!

My thought on the transmission longevity and possible the timing belt survival have to do with the location of the car and the sheer number of miles driven. Said another way, Iowa as a location, and the huge number of miles since the car was built imply lots and LOTS of low RPM highway cruising; both of which are pretty easy on the transmission and the timing belt assemblies.

Don't get me wrong, a 400,000+ mile 5-Speed automatic and 300,000+ miles on the timing belt assembly are both VERY impressive, I just think it is all of the long distance cruising which enabled both of those thresholds.

LOL, 172,000 miles on a 3G TL means it is just barely broken in.

Are you sure it has 417K? lol. That car looks great for the mileage.

The paint still has a great shine to it!
