Congratulations on joining the 3G TL community. FWIW, those wheels are definitely not a "factory installed mod".

@horseshoez Thank you for the welcome! I completely overlooked that, the previous owner left those wheels (from what I could find online, I believe they are the Motegi MR118) on the car when I purchased it. Since they don't clear the factory calipers, he had them on the car with 1 inch floating spacers all around A week after buying the car, I found a set of lightly used factory Type S wheels that replaced the old wheels.

Hey all! Just recently bought a TL as my first car and I'm super exited about it. I've been driving it for a few weeks and absolutely love everything about the car. I've been looking around on the forum since I've gotten it, so much good information here.

Name or Screen Name: OmegaMax
Country/State/City of purchase: Olathe, KS
Last 5 digit of Vin: Idk
Color Ext/Int: CBP
Month/Yr of purchase: Feb 2020
Price paid before tax: $6,000
Model Yr of TL: 2008
Transmission: Auto
Navi/Non-Navi: Navi
Mileage: 140k ish

It was one of the only ones I was looking at that didn't have a cracked dash and it was maintained hella good. A few scratches and dings on the front and the emblem is broken a bit but I'm going to get it cleaned up soon and plan on doing something similar to mmade22's grill mod. Haven't done anything to it yet but I'm going to get some new tires soon, the two back ones leak a bit. I'm also going to get it tinted and I might get some custom brake lights at some point. I've also been looking for an a-spec kit because I love the subtle yet aggressive look.

I drover her home today...

I am a proud owner of a '07 TL with just under 150k. I think i got her for a really good deal...just under $4,600 out the door. She has some cosmetic issues, but runs and shifts well. I wish it were a manual trans. and a Type S. But, I still lover her!

Trying to contain the itch to mod. I had a '00 Ford Lightning...so it's hard to contain.

I bought this car from the original owner, it's at 115K mi. He had maintenance records and major service including timing belt, clutch and flywheel were done in 2017 @ 94K mi. The interior and exterior show the normal signs of wear for a 15 year old daily driver of a dad with two kids. The dash is cracked like a mo fo. Both front seats have patches. The interior had a hasty wipe down but was fairly dirty when I picked it up. But that's all small potatoes to me; mechanically it's rock solid and I am thrilled to have this sweet Third Gen TL!

I'm a new member here and I joined because I'm looking to buy a 3rd gen TL and wanted to get some insight from experienced owners.
I'm aware the V6 transmissions are prone to failure, but how long have some of you people gone without changing the fluid?
The Acura TL's I see pop up for sale in my area have 130-240k miles, how weary should I be of these high mileage ones?
I'm not too concerned about the interior or cosmetic aspects of the car, just the drive-ability.

So, there are basically three transmission options for the 3G TL (plus a DIY fourth option):
  • 2004-2008 models with the 6-Speed manual; these transmissions are pretty much bullet proof; the only real issue is to make sure you use ACDelco Synchromesh Friction Modified gear lube to avoid a 3rd gear grind/pop out issue.
  • 2004-2006 models with the 5-Speed automatic; these should have the ATF changed at the very least, every 30,000 miles; even still, there have been very few folks here who've been able to get over 200,000 miles on a transmission, and many have failed well under 100,000 miles.
  • 2007-2008 models with the 5-Speed automatic; these have proven to be reasonably reliable, and with a 30,000 mile ATF replacement schedule, can often last well in excess of 200,000 miles.
  • 2004-2006 models which have had the 2006-2007 "AV6" (aka. BAYA; aka. Honda Accord V6) transmission retrofitted; this transmission is bolt compatible with the transmission which came in the 2004-2006 TL models, but has the same basic internals as the 2007-2008 TL transmissions (which are not bolt compatible with the earlier cars).
Long story short, if you're looking at one of the last two model years, then you are probably good to go, however, if you're looking at the earlier model years, ask if/when the transmission was replaced, and if it is still the original unit, and you REALLY like the car otherwise, budget for a transmission replacement.

Keep us posted on your search.

I appreciate the response!
Yeah I'm looking at the automatic transmission ones for now. Say for a 125k mile 2005 TL, if the owner doesn't know when they had the transmission fluid changed, is it better to just walk away?
My gut is that I should only buy if the owner has been taking care of the transmission fluid changes.
What are your guy's thoughts?

Generally, a basic thing like ATF, an owner should be able to rattle off top of their head. But with that said most people are not "car guys" and we are more meticulous/OCD about it. A majority of car owners probably can't say when that was last done...it doesn't neccessarilyt mean it's treated like crap but it certainly doesn't bode super well.

If you have the means/time to wait, then you can/should wait. 05 TLs have the at-risk transmissions, so it's more risky than the 07-08 cars.

Overall high mileage doesn't neccesarilyt mean = costly repairs just after you buy it....I recently bought a car with 197,000 on the odometer and drove it 1500miles back with 0 mechanical issues...it now has over 205,000 miles with no issues and just a oil change and tire rotation.

It's all about the ownership and records of maintenance.

What I did before I bought mine a couple of summers ago was to obtain the carfax report and called every single one on the list to get a better description of work performed since most only put "required maintenance" or along those lines. Keep in mind that not everyone updates that info to Carfax but that's how I came to find out about previous owner had the Bluetooth disconnected (happy they did because I would have done myself), driver side door mirror motor replaced, amongst things not even notated on a report.
Also might check on the timing belt 105k maintenance, that's quite the chore and if they haven't done that or know about it or the transmission fluid change then not way I'd buy it. Generally though you should be able to tell by the way the vehicle looks... Hella dents, leather looks terrible, dirty engine bay then they prolly didn't do a damn thing. That's how I approach things but best of luck nonetheless. These cars are fantastic to drive and definitely the best looking generation of TL produced.

Yeah every seller I've asked (like 5 so far) do not know when they had their transmission fluid changed, and they all had 150k+. Yeah luckily I have like a month to buy so not in a rush, and I live in norcal so there's regular postings. Most of these owners I feel do not have carfax reports btw.
Yeah I'm not savy on my transmission knowledge, the 07-08 ones are better?

Looks awesome! Yeah there's people out here selling 125k mileage with no timing belt change and no transmission fluid change asking $5k lol. I'll keep looking around, might be useful to ask you or others when I see one to get a second opinion if you're interested in giving your 2 cents

I'm thinking if the car is in pristine condition and yet has no log book of transmission service, then negotiate the price low enough to at least partially pay for a new transmission if/when the transmission fails.

Honda continually updated the internals of the H5 transmission series; the units in the early 3G TLs were more reliable than the units in the 2G TLs, and the units in the 2006 and 2007 Honda V6 Accords (which are bolt compatible with a 2004-2006 TL), and the units in the 2007-2008 TLs (which are not bolt compatible with the earlier 3G TLs). Those last two vintages of the H5 transmissions are considered pretty reliable.

Yeah thanks for sharing the info.
I was wondering if anyone here has bought seat covers and knows which ones to stay away from and which ones are any good?
