What the hell is this getting 4 week vacation or whatever you speak of.

State of CA:
8 hours of sick a month
Depending on years of state service is your vacation time.
Under 3 years 8 hours
3-12 years: 10 hours
12-20 years: 12 hours
20+ 14 or 15
all depends on your bargaining unit contract though, some get more, like my pops.

Then we get little incentives throughout the year, Every July we get 2 professional development days and a personal holiday.

Then since I work a Alternate work week schedule, I sometimes accumulate 8 hours if my regular day off falls on a holiday. But I work 9 hour days, 4 days a week.


Then there is another thing called annual leave which combines your sick and vacation hours for the month. Which is best to be on before you retire, because you can cash it all out.

I'm assuming you meant days and not hours.
At my company you get 2 weeks to start, 3 at 5 years...4 weeks at 15 years....and 5 weeks at 23 years.
2 floating holidays...
when I say weeks I mean 5 working days...40 hours.
I bought a week once and didn't go anywhere so I never did again.

Little J often asks me to stay home and lay in bed with her, or to take a day to take a long weekend to go see stuff...that along with a baby makes me want to take something extra. This year I feel I did a lot, but didn't really take any major vacation and I have 8 days left for 2017...I'll use them around Christmas when my sister arrives.
If you buy vacation you can't roll, basically...but you can sell the days back if your boss approves, which mine already told me he would.

I contemplated 2 weeks but I'll start off with 1 week...see how it goes. If I have a huge overage at the end of 2018 I won't do it next year...if I use them all and feel like I want more, I'll take the 2 weeks next year.

I'll end up with 27 paid days for 2018 this way.

No, I meant hours.

So basically we get 3 weeks of vacation a year, but can use it whenever we want.

We have a cap out at 640 hours. Once 640 hits, if your Department is on it like they should be, your HR specialist will reach out and tell you that you need to start taking some time off. This is only happening because years ago, people would retire with 1000+ hours on the books and be getting fat checks...
