My perspective is that alcohol is an emotional multiplier.
If you're tired, you'll be more tired...if you're happy you'll get more happy...if you're depressed you'll not give a fuck and shots and fuck it. If you're mad you'll do all that plus maybe kick a door in.
If you don't do moderation well and are unpredictable with it...it's a bad combination.

But I also think that most people can't relate...they usually have a story about this ONE time they overdrank or were hungover. So the idea of overdoing it constantly or to belligerent is foreign to them.
Also, everything that drinks thinks you have a problem if you don't...
I can't think of one down side to not drinking though. Have all your alcohol money back in the bank...you are sober to drive every single time. If you get mad or upset you remember why and you handle
it accordingly. You wake up feeling good every day.
