what mis-interpretation. i said nothing about beating kids. just that some families probably don't keep kids the center of their life-universe, everyone was posting about how much time/money it costs to have kids as they take over parents life....but seems like this doesn't have to be the case

When I was a kid, dad would come home and we'd be able to hear him from a block away by the rumbling from the rusted out cherry bombs on the C-10. He'd pull up to the house and come blazing in, slamming the screen door, already drunk and pissed at the world, and us kids would scatter like cockroaches when the lights turned on. It was every kid for themselves and you didn't want to be the last one in sight, and mercy on your soul if you were caught on the couch.
Dad would saunter over to the 19-inch Trinitron he picked up in trade for some off-the-clock plumbing work at some prissy pants middle class mcmansion on the other side of town, and he'd run his hand over the back of the set to see if it was warm...
"And what exactly did *you* accomplish today?" he'd say, in a semi mocking accusatory tone; heavy inflection on the "you", inflecting that it was a retorical question that he already knew the answer to... "Not a gawtdamn thing I bet... just sittin around onyer ass allday watching the gawtdamn teevhee and..."
*Whap* the first backhanded slap would come mid sentence as if to emphasize that time was money and while we didn't have much of the latter, the former was in abundance when it came to "building character" as he liked to refer to the beatings. "No good piece of shit..." *whap* "...never gonna amount to nothin'..." *whap* "...ungrateful waste of life..." *Whap whap whap*
But then he'd get that serious look on his face, with the distant stare, hollow eyes, like he wasn't so much looking *at* you as *through* you, and he'd take pause and carefully and deliberately get right in your face and say, "you're never going anywhere in life... Thirty fuckin' years from now, you'll be sitting right there on that fuckin' couch, drunk yourself, beating your own wife and kids, and acting like an asshole on the internet. Why don't you make a business plan or something"
And then we'd call Tobey over and make him lick peanut butter off our balls.
