3G injuries from "assisted/self" closing doors

I found the following old threads regarding the doors and would like anyone to comment with any injuries they've experienced involving this "feature". It's easy to see that it was only a matter of time before a serious injury occurred and I find it hard to believe that ours is the first beyond bumps and bruises. The passenger door on my TL shut on my boyfriends thumb and instantly amputated it and they were not able to reattach it. Please be aware if you have kids!

They can't make everything idiot proof.
Sorry to say, but after the thumb ordeal, it probably won't happen again.
The door has 2 stops built into the hinge assembly. Open the door far enough and you'll encounter one, open
farther and another.

I don't think my doors operate any differently than on any other car I have owned. Unless stuck on one of the detents, the doors will come back to the closed position.

Sorry to hear

This is why I tell everyone that the doors are heavy and will close by themself (to avoid people from slamming my doors).
Also why I park so that there is no car beside me and passengers can open the door wide enough to fall in one of the 2 grooves.

I never minded that feature on my 3G. It wasn't something I ever felt I needed or wanted, but I didn't mind that it was there. It doesn't seem to be as pronounced on the 4G. Oddly enough, my wife has had here fingers slammed in the 4G door twice but never in the 3G.

So what am I missing? I have a 3G TL and, to the best of my knowledge at least, my car has no "Assisted/Self-Closing" doors. Is there some option or switch one must select to enable/disable this feature?

as opposed to the Accords, the TL has a longer door checker with 2 or 3 indents, which allows the door to rest on one of these indents. if not resting on one of these indents, the door has a tendecy to close.

Some have switched out the longer door checker for the Accords shorter no indent door checker.

the pictures that I liked to use to show or demonstrate were hosted on photobucket and are no longer hosted.

Hope he is doing ok!

Okay, this makes some sense...

Where I park on our farm my car is slightly nose up; in my Accord the door wouldn't stay open, regardless of whether the arm was sitting in a denten or not. On the other hand, my TL, once in a denten stays where the heck I put it; if I don't open it to either the first or second stop, yes it closes, but no worse than my Accord did.

Hope this works and you can see the difference in "door checkers"

Here is the Accords "door checker"

TL's "door checker"

I just literally had this conversation with a master tech at a local Acura dealership. Before he look at the pics he also note the problem is that TL door trying to swing out too much.

About 15 years ago, my brother and I were getting out of the step mom's '96 Accord Wagon. Somehow, he put his hand in a stupid place and I closed my door (as one does when exiting a vehicle) on his finger. Not that I slammed it, but Im sure it was harder than my TL closes on its own. His finger was swollen and sore, but it's still there today.

Im calling shenanigans on the amputated thumb.

the other day the wind picked up and the door closed fast and hit my face. Definitely dazed for a little bit. I'm new to the Acura TL and just kind of wrote it off.

Is this self closing thing the reason why it closed so easily?

If you open the doors by "shoving" it open with the arm/elbow (from inside the car), you WILL get the door coming back at you fast because of momentum. When you shove the door open, you put enough force for the door to skip right over the first "indent", then it will come to a velocity of zero and start coming back fast. You can model the system but thats too much engineer talk.
Some people do this (including me a handful of times when I'm lazy) and it will happen but I expect it so I just let my arm stop it from slamming back.

Now if you open the door carefully and with your left hand on the door panel at the arm rest or at the pillar beside the window, the reaction force from your arm will prevent the door closing on you.

It's not that people can't manage the doors, it's just that some find the automatic door closing a nuisance, e.g. my wife/daughter. Although I made an earlier post, must add they hate the "automatic" closing doors. Just not the muscle nor reach of us guys.

I also think other cars have spoiled us/conditioned us to slam the door shut, or to shove it open.
also depends on how meticulous a person is. I've seen some passengers take great care not to damage property.

If I had a dollar for every time I yelled at my fiancee "you don't need to slam it, the doors close on their own!" after she slams the passenger door shut....I'd have like $300.

Keep in mind that panel gaps have gotten much tighter over the years. I have had my fingers closed in doors of cars 15-20 years ago as well, but the gaps were big enough to just bruise my fingers.

Mine yells at me for making a comment when she does that. Her favorite is to smash the trunk shut... Almost wanna spank for doing that everytime!
