Post 2004 TL 6 Speed Manual - What fluids (Tranny oil, Oil ETC ) do you use?

So I recently bought my TL and a mechanic told me that that my transmission slips a little bit. Personally I didn't notice it until he pointed it out. Now, to fix this issue I read up that GM Syncromesh should help me out in the whole tranny slipping thing. So then I found the Royal Purple Syncromax fluid which is apparently one of the best fluids on the market. Can i use this stuff in my tranny and will it actually help my slight slipping issues? Also should I use Royal Purple 5W20 in my next oil change or should I use the synthetic Castrol Titanium? ( Oil change due in 1200 KM ) Also if you guys have any suggestions to brake fluid, powersteering fluid, diff fluid or any other fluids i should use please tell me them!! Now for a little performance talk ... on a tight budget ... Should I remove the Check Valve and if i do, will I feel a lot of clutch difference?

we use the GM gear oil for the transmission to help the syncros not be so notchy. (the gear selector can sometimes be notchy and hard to put in gear. sometimes even spitting third gear back out)

clutch fluid is different than transmission fluid.
replacing clutch fluid will not cure your slipping clutch.

Royal purple is mostly marketing. you pay high dollar for something that a regular oil can do.

and modding is experimental.
try removing the check valve! if you like it, awesome...
if you dont, put it back in!

Thanks! But 2nd does pop out sometimes ... especially the first day i got the car. Its weird how it hasn't popped out for me in almost 3 weeks but when a good friend of mine ( who is a tech ) drives my car it pops out for him once in a while. Strange. Something I should be worried about?

^so, then drain the transmission fluid and fill it with the GM stuff to cure the notchiness and gear pop out.

The transmission itself can't "slip". The clutch however, can. GM Syncromesh is awesome, but will do nothing for clutch slippage. It will cure it from popping out of gear. Slipping could also be related to the slave cylinder.

I guess to the mechanic it is ... also since i have no time at the moment to drive it to a mech, at roughly 1600 -1900 RPM when i accelerate at maybe 1/4 throttle, or more, i get a screechy noise coming from the front of my car ( cant tell if its on the left or right ). any ideas to what that might be related to?

Well, it's actually AC Delco Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid now. The part # is 10-1014 or 88900399. Just look for the bottle that says friction modified.

I put it in my 04 as soon as I bought it with 25k on the odometer, and I've changed it every 25k after that.

I have GM Synchromesh Friction Modified in my trans now, but will be switching to Torco MTF when I do my clutch/flywheel/final drive.

GM fluid in my Type S. Even put it in when the car was showing no signs of notchiness or popping out of third. Put the fluid in at 5300 miles, she's at 14k now and shifts as smooth as butter.
Never heard of them popping out of 2nd, I thought it was always 3rd. Either way try the GM stuff there is a good chance it will take care of that issue. Like justn said though, it obviously won't do anything for a slipping clutch, that's a whole nother issue...and usually an expensive one too!

Is that Torco MTF available locally? Also, I hope you give an update after you switch to it.

If you don't mind me asking how many miles your clutch/flywheel have on it, and was it abused at all? I'm just curious because I know I'll be doing mine within not that long a time.

GM Synchromesh Friction Modified is the way to go.
Put in @ ~50K miles and has shifted great ever since.

I put the gm syncromesh in my 05 6 speed tranny about 800 miles ago. Best decision ever made. My 3rd gear doesn't grind anymore. Shifts like butter and way less notchy

The newer Acura MTF is a lot better than the old fluid that was put in at the factory. However, the GM Synchromesh Modified Fluid has saved a lot of MT transmissions here that had 3rd pop out, notchy engagement, etc.

One thing I would suggest is the Comptech Short Shifter Kit, it def. makes a great improvement!

As far as other fluids go, use Honda/Acura Coolant and use Honda/Acura Power Steering Fluid!

You can order Torco MTF from MFactory® Competition Products - Performance Driveline Components. I will give an update when I do switch over to it.

As far as my clutch and flywheel goes, I just hit 100k on the factory clutch/flywheel. I ordered a LuK clutch kit a while ago and was going to use the P2R 6 puck disc, but decided I'm going to sell that and just get a Clutchmasters kit with the lightened flywheel. With my old wheel/suspension setup (MB Battles 215 tire and Function Form HT Spec), it would feel like the clutch would slip from 2nd to 3rd on hard shifts, but now with my current setup (RPF1 235 R comp tire and Tein Street Flex) I don't notice the slip anymore. My clutch has been through numerous launches and hard shifts and is still holding up. I know once I put my new clutch/flywheel on, it'll really make the car come alive.
